Areas for the protection of municipal drinking water withdrawals
These thematic layers present the location of the protection areas of category 1 water withdrawal sites as defined in article 51 of the Water Withdrawal and Protection Regulation (RPEP). For groundwater withdrawals, protection areas and their vulnerability levels are determined according to the requirements of articles 53, 54, 57 and 65 of the RPEP. The areas for the protection of surface water withdrawals are determined according to the requirements of articles 70, 72 and 74 of the RPEP.The protection areas and vulnerability levels were compiled by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks (MELCCFP) based on vulnerability analysis reports that were produced by municipalities under articles 68 and 75 of the RPEP. According to the manager, the vulnerability analysis reports were produced by professionals, representatives of watershed organizations (OBV) or representatives of regional consultation tables (TCR).**This third party metadata element was translated using an automated translation tool (Amazon Translate).**
Trapping Concessions - 250k
Registered Trapping Concessions (RTCs) are legal boundaries that define an area where the holder of the concession has the exclusive right to trap furbearing animals. Because trapping is done primarily along waterways, RTCs are often defined by watersheds, using height of land (ridges and mountain peaks) as their boundaries. This is the opposite of GMAs which are defined by mountains. Sometimes RTCs are grouped together to form a Group Trapping Concession (in which groups of individual share the right to trap). This may or may not involve the elimination of the component RTC boundaries. The Yukon has 360 RTCs and 13 Group Trapping Concessions. Only Kluane National Park, Kluane Wildlife Sanctuary, and Ddhaw Ghro Habitat Protection are are not covered by RTCs. Canada1Water Classification of the National Hydro Network: Stream Order and Graph Refinement
A vector representation of stream networks is a crucial dataset for the modelling the surface water and groundwater components of the hydrologic cycle. For many usages a crucial attribute of the drainage network is a digital topology and hierarchal stream order attribute (e.g., Strahler stream order). In Canada jurisdictional stream networks are available for the provinces and territories and nationally for Canada in the National Hydrological Network (NHN) dataset. Unfortunately, the NHN data lacks the same topological and attribute information that is available for numerous provinces due to standardization for the entire country. For Canada1Water it was also necessary to have a harmonized dataset with the United States, for both the southern transboundary watersheds and the Alaskan watersheds. This report documents the processes completed to upgrade the topological and graph network support for NHN and provide continuous connectivity with US datasets. It also highlights and corrects a number of stream density and stream order issues that occur within Canada across provincial and territorial borders and NTS tiles. All vector processing was completed in RivEX software extension for ArcMap. Following complete topological correction stream classification was assigned and a table of the node graph network developed. Additional work was then completed to normalize stream density particularly amongst low-order streams between British Columbia and the Yukon and amongst local NTS tiles in Quebec and Ontario. Corrected NHN Strahler stream order assignment was validated against a number of provincial and watershed datasets, all of which already have Strahler stream order attributed. These datasets are the same underlying digitized vector data, so there are no differences in node or polyline positions. Strahler stream order assignment validation was only done by visual comparison as due to differences in vector segments a statistical comparison is complicated. The transboundary integrated C1W stream network with complete classification provides a seamless national dataset to support transdisciplinary studies (fisheries, wildlife, health, pesticide and nutrient issues, mining impact, ecosystem restoration, numeric modelling) that involve a knowledge of stream distribution and ranking.
Canadian Geographical Names - CGN
The Canadian Geographical Names Data Base (CGNDB) is the authoritative national database of Canada's geographical names. The purpose of the CGNDB is to store place names and their attributes that have been approved by the Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC), the national coordinating body responsible for standards and policies on place names. The CGNDB is maintained by Natural Resources Canada, through the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation. The geographic extent of the CGNDB is the Canadian landmass and water bodies; the temporal extent is from 1897 to present. This dataset is extracted from the CGNDB on a weekly basis, and consists of current officially approved names, feature type, coordinates of the feature, decision date, source, and other attributes. The output file formats for this product are: text (CSV), Shape (SHP), and Keyhole Markup Language (KML).Content advisory: The Canadian Geographical Names Database contains historical terminology that is considered racist, offensive and derogatory. This data is intended to identify Canadian Alternate Exchange Areas described in https://tc.canada.ca/en/marine-transportation/marine-safety/list-canada-s-designated-alternate-ballast-water-exchange-area-fresh-waters-tp-13617e-2021. The data is not intended for navigation purposes.According to Canada’s Ballast Water Regulations, if your vessel enters waters under Canadian jurisdiction from somewhere other than the U.S. waters within the Great Lakes Basin, and it cannot conduct a ballast water exchange in the areas set out in paragraphs 14(1)(a) and (b) of the regulations, then it will have to conduct a ballast water exchange in one of the areas listed below:-Gulf of St. Lawrence-Atlantic Canada-Western Canada-Canadian Eastern Arctic-Canadian Western Arctic: If you bring your vessel to a Canadian port, offshore terminal or anchorage area in the Western Arctic ballast water must be exchanged in an area as far away from shore as possible, where the water is more than 100 meters deep.Legal Constraints: Users should be aware that the polygons depicting ballast water exchange areas are intended for illustration only and should not be used for navigational or legal purposes.
