Innu Audio Index
The Innu Audio Index is an extract from the Canadian Geographical Names Data Base (CGNDB) of geographical names with associated audio. The shared audio with the Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC) is the intellectual property of the Innu Nation. The points represent official geographical names in Innu-aimun, the language of the Innu Nation. The CGNDB is the authoritative national database of Canada's geographical names. It contains geographical names and their attributes that have been approved by the GNBC, the national coordinating body responsible for standards and policies on place names.The GNBC is working to increase awareness of existing Indigenous place names and help promote the revitalization of Indigenous cultures and languages. The GNBC does not warrant or guarantee that the information is accurate, complete or current at all times. NAFO fishing division 4T Herring Science Acoustic Survey
Since 1991, an annual fishery-independent acoustic survey of early fall (September-October) concentrations of Herring has been conducted in the sGSL. The standard annual survey area occurs in the 4Tmno areas where both NAFO Div. 4T Herring spawning components aggregate in the fall. The survey uses a random stratified design of parallel transects within predefined strata. Surveys are conducted at night and use two vessels: an acoustic vessel to quantify the fish schools biomass using a hull-mounted 120 KHz split-beam transducer, and a fishing vessel to sample aggregates of fish with a pelagic trawl (details in LeBlanc et al. 2015; see also LeBlanc and Dale 1996).Trawl samples are used to separate the estimated biomass by spawning component and age, determine species composition, and size distribution for the estimation of the target strength (LeBlanc and Dale 1996; LeBlanc et al. 2015).A standardized abundance index is generated from this acoustic survey. This index includes catch-at-age data since 1994.This survey also provides the age-disaggregated acoustic abundance index for ages 2 to 10 for spring spawners and fall spawners.
Tidal Current and Power Density Maps of Quatsino Sound, British Columbia, Derived from Hydrodynamic Modeling-Based Tidal Resource Assessments
A tidal resource assessment dataset for the Quatsino Sound region, British Columbia, was developed, including temporal maximum, mean, and minimum velocity magnitudes, standard deviations, and power density. The dataset was generated using a high-resolution 2D depth-averaged hydrodynamic model based on the Telemac-Mascaret solver, with Natural Neighbor interpolation applied for raster creation. This newly published dataset is the first in a series of regional tidal energy maps for Canada. Developed by CanmetENERGY Ottawa in collaboration with partners, these maps aim to support effective project planning and development by providing comprehensive tidal resource data across the country.Disclaimer:Potential errors in the model results may arise from inherent limitations in the topo-bathymetric data accuracy, assumptions in boundary conditions, approximations within the numerical methods, and the input data used in the numerical modeling. These factors introduce uncertainties that can affect the overall model outcomes. The model is subject to the following conditions:• Topo-bathymetric data: Obtained from electronic navigational charts and the Canadian Hydrographic Service’s (CHS) NONNA-10 Bathymetric Data packages, consolidating CHS-managed digital bathymetric sources with a maximum resolution of 10 m.• Tidal and current harmonic components: Used as boundary conditions from the TPXO9 global tidal model.• Model calibration and validation: Performed using data from Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP), surface elevations recorded at CHS tidal stations, and Lagrangian drifter measurements.• Interpolation method: Dataset outputs were generated with Natural Neighbor interpolation, which assumes smoothly varying data and may not capture sharp local gradients or features.• Modeled estimates: All values for velocity magnitudes, velocity standard deviations, and power density are modeled estimates and not direct field measurements.This dataset is intended for preliminary assessment of tidal projects only. It should not be the sole basis for making critical decisions or investments. We strongly recommend further validation and in-depth analysis. Users are responsible for conducting their own due diligence and additional research to verify the data's accuracy and relevance for specific applications.By accessing and using this dataset, users acknowledge and accept these disclaimers. NAFO fishing division 4T Herring Spawning Grounds Acoustic Survey
In 2015, a spawning ground acoustic survey that follows the design of the fishery-independent acoustic survey was initiated. This survey is the result of a partnership between DFO and fishery associations. The survey design uses random parallel transects within predefined strata. Surveys are conducted by fishermen in the fall fishing season according to protocols developed by DFO. The survey is conducted at night, during the weekend fishery closures except in Herring fishing area 16C and 16E in 2015 to 2017, where this region didn’t have weekend closures. The spawning ground acoustic survey is meant to provide a nightly estimate of spawning biomass among regions. It is analyzed in the same manner as the fishery-independent acoustic survey. The catches from the experimental nets are used to calibrate the spawning group specific target strength in order to obtain the nightly estimates of spawning biomass.
Pacific Recreational Fishery Salmon Head Depots
Location and contact information for Pacific Recreational Fishery Salmon Head Recovery Depots.The sport fishing community has an important role in the recovery of coded-wire tags found in Coho and Chinook. A coded-wire tag is a 1mm piece of wire that is laser etched with a unique number. Tags are injected into the nose cartilage of juvenile salmon prior to ocean migration. Annually, Canada and the United States tag over 50 million juvenile salmon. Fisheries and Oceans Canada applies about 5.5 million tags, using about 5.5 kilometres of wire. Anglers can recognize the presence of a coded-wire tag because of the missing adipose fin (located on the dorsal surface of the salmon). If you have caught an adipose fin clipped Coho and Chinook, it is a simple matter of removing the head from the fish, completing a sport head label and then submitting the head to a Sport Head Recovery Depot in the area. It is just as important to turn in heads from terminal or freshwater sites as it is from marine areas. Even though anglers fishing close to hatcheries can be fairly certain of the origin of their catch, data will not be recorded unless the heads from fin-clipped recoveries are turned in. Without the data, the health of the stock and the value of the resource to anglers could be underestimated.

Exploratory Video-Sidescan and Echosounder Survey of Welch Cove
Towfish (sidescan and video) and echo sounder surveys were utilized to examine bottom type and macrophyte cover within the area of two coastal marine finfish aquaculture sites, one in New Brunswick (Welch Cove) and one in Nova Scotia (Jordan Bay). Both towfish and echo sounder data could be used independently of one another. However, the towfish data were very useful for ground truthing echo sounder based classifications. All survey data were placed into a GIS which could be used to answer management questions such as the placement of cages at sites, benthic impacts and baseline conditions to determine long term changes.Cite this data as: Vandermeulen H.
