If the holder of a mineral claim wishes to produce minerals from the claim, or to hold it for more than thirty years, the holder must apply for a lease of the claim. This business view contains a detailed set of attributes. A reserve is established by a B.C. Regulation of the Chief Gold Commissioner under - Section 22 of the Mineral Tenure Act: Mineral reserves - Section 21 of the Coal Act: Coal land reserves and it is the legal instrument used to prevent or restrict access to mineral, placer and coal lands.

A mineral restriction is in place to limit and define mineral exploration and development within the Alberta government's mandate to protect natural or historical sites and to manage mineral resources. Examples of mineral restrictions include Bird Sanctuary, Provincial Park, and Coal Mine Licence Area. Restriction types with different levels of surface access are the result of government policy and all are mineral or substance specific.
