Tree Species (2019)
High-resolution map of leading tree species distribution for Canada’s forested ecosystems (2019). Leading tree species map produced from a 2019 Landsat image composite, geographic and climate data, elevation derivatives, and remote sensing derived phenology following the framework described in Hermosilla et al. (2022). Regional classification models were generated based on Canada’s National Forest Inventory using a 150x150 km tiling system. The leading tree species are defined by representing the most voted tree species from the Random Forests classification models (i.e. the class with the highest class membership probability). The data represents leading tree species of Canada's forested ecosystems in 2019. An image compositing window of August 1 ± 30 days was used to generate the best-available-pixel (BAP) image composites utilized as source data for the classification. The science and methods developed to generate the information outcomes shown here, that track and characterize the history of Canada’s forests, were led by Canadian Forest Service of Natural Resources Canada, developed within the framework of Canada’s National Terrestrial Ecosystem Monitoring System (NTEMS), partnered with the University of British Columbia, augmented by processing capacity from Digital Research Alliance of Canada. For an overview on the data, image processing, and methods applied, as well as information on independent accuracy assessment of the data, see Hermosilla et al. (2022) https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2022.113276When using this data, please cite as: Hermosilla, T., Bastyr, A., Coops, N.C., White, J.C., Wulder, M.A., 2022. Tree Type - Common Attribute Schema for Forest Resource Inventories
The Common Attribute Schema for Forest Resource Inventories (CASFRI) is a Canadian forest resource inventory data repository. Forest resource inventory datasets in CASFRI are harmonized to a common data model so that data collected by different agencies following different standards can be used together. Participating provincial, territorial and federal government departments and agencies share current and historical map-based forest resource inventory datasets through CASFRI so that their data are available to users who’s areas of interest span multiple jurisdictions. CASFRI was originally developed by academic researchers (Cumming et al., https://doi.org/10.1139/cjfr-2014-0102). This flavour of CASFRI (CASFRIv5) was developed anew in collaboration with academic researchers at the University of Laval to provide a government version of CASFRI that is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. It uses the most up-to-date forest inventory data provided by participating provincial, territorial, and federal government departments and agencies. CASFRIv5 is hosted on the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers’ data portal, the National Forest Information System (http://nfis.org).
Geological map of the Arctic, 1:5 000 000
As part of the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007'08 and 2008'09 activities, and related objectives of the Commission for the Geological Map of the World (CGMW), nations of the circumpolar Arctic have co-operated to produce a new bedrock geology map and related digital map database at a scale of 1:5 000 000. The map, released in north polar stereographic projection using the World Geodetic System (WGS) 84 datum, includes complete geological and physiographic coverage of all onshore and offshore bedrock areas north of latitude 60° north.
Recognizing Women with Canadian Place Names
This interactive map is a collaborative project by Natural Resources Canada and the federal, provincial and territorial members of the Geographical Names Board of Canada. The map illustrates a sample of close to 500 places in Canada named for women from a range of backgrounds who have been remembered for many different reasons. Each point on the map is categorized by a theme, and contains a short description of the person behind that place name. The descriptions reveal that information about these women and the places named for them varies widely; some are well-known and well-documented figures, while little is known about others.
Surface Water Quality Risk
This map displays an assessment of surface water quality risk for the agricultural area of Alberta. Agricultural activities that may have an impact on surface water quality, including livestock, crop production and agrochemical use, were identified and used to produce this map. The classes shown on the map were ranked from 0 (lowest risk) to 1 (highest risk). This resource was created in 2002 using ArcGIS.

Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (NAFO Division 4T) Atlantic Herring Experimental Gillnet Surveys
PURPOSE:To provide demographic parameters and relative indices of abundance for Atlantic herring in NAFO Division 4T.DESCRIPTION:The experimental gillnet survey is conducted in collaboration with Atlantic herring harvesters and uses standardized multi-mesh gillnets. Gillnets are set on spawning grounds in the spring and fall. Data (fish and sample) are collected to provide: (1) relative age-disaggregated indices of abundance, (2) an indicator of relative changes in fishery selectivity over time, and (3) information on the demographic composition of herring on the spawning grounds. PARAMETERS COLLECTED:Sample: sample location; sample weight; mesh size; length frequencyBiological: length; weight; gonad weight; maturity stage (biological); sex (biological); ring count (biological)USE LIMITATION:To ensure scientific integrity and appropriate use of the data, we would encourage you to contact the data custodian.
