Remote Communities Energy Database
The Remote Communities Energy Database is a public resource that provides pertinent factual information about the generation and use of electricity and other energy sources for all remote communities in Canada. Communities are identified as remote communities if they are not currently connected to the North-American electrical grid nor to the piped natural gas network; and is a permanent or long-term (5 years or more) settlement with at least 10 dwellings. The Remote Communities Energy Database is the only national data source on energy in remote communities that is publically available on one centralized site. The Remote Communities Energy Database allows users to search and conduct analyses of remote communities and their energy context. Users are also able download the data from the Remote Communities Energy Database dataset in CSV (i.e., excel compatible) format. This data is collected from a number of sources including the remote communities themselves, local utilities, provincial and territorial government’s, Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), Statistics Canada, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and various other stakeholders.
Community Well-Being Index
The Community Well-Being (CWB) Index is a method of assessing socio-economic well-being in Canadian communities. Various indicators of socio-economic well-being, including education, labour force activity, income and housing, are derived from Statistics Canada's Census of Population and combined to give each community a well-being "score". These scores are used to compare well-being across First Nations and Inuit communities with well-being in other Canadian communities. Indicator values may be missing for a community because of non-participation in the census, inadequate data quality, or insufficient population size. Remote Communities Energy Database (2025)
The Remote Communities Energy Database (RCED) is a tool that aims to collect and show pertinent information about the generation and use of electricity and other energy sources for all remote communities of Canada. This data is collected from a variety sources, including Statistics Canada, Provincial and Territorial Governments, utilities, public reports and communities. The term “remote community” refers to any community not currently connected to the North American electrical grid nor to the piped natural gas network; and which is a permanent or long-term (five years or more) settlement with at least 10 dwellings.Disclaimer: Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) accepts no responsibility or liability for any errors, inaccuracies and/or omissions in the Remote Communities Energy Database (RCED). The content of the RCED is a compilation of data obtained from many sources and the data is subject to change without notice. Neither does NRCan warrant or guarantee that the information is accurate, complete or current at all times. In no event will NRCan or the Government of Canada and its employees be liable or responsible for any damages resulting from any such errors, inaccuracies or omissions nor will they be liable or responsible for any lost profits, loss of revenue or earnings, claims by third parties or for any economic, indirect, special, incidental, consequential or exemplary damage including but not limited to any demands or causes of action in contract, tort or otherwise including any liability for negligence.
Communities and subdivisions - surveyed
Features are Administrative Land Objects that represent the spatial extents of a jurisdiction that is created and managed as a separate entity within the ICM database. Un-derived Administrative Areas include QUADs, Groups, Subdivisions, Municipalities, Block Land Transfers, Settlement Areas, Districts and Regions. Un-derived Administrative Areas also include the spatial extent of site that do not have a specific administrative boundary such as Indian settlements and national historic sites. In the LYR files for CSW, the QUADs & Groups were removed with a Query Builder. This cadastral framework provides a parcel base of properly structured vector data designed and suited for Geographical Information System (GIS) application and can be used for land management purposes. This data set is not be used for defining boundaries. Administrative decisions should be based on legal documents and legal survey plans.Distributed from [GeoYukon](https://yukon.ca/geoyukon) by the [Government of Yukon](https://yukon.ca/maps) . Community Watersheds - Cancelled
This 1:20,000. scale inventory contains digital maps of cancelled community watershed boundaries. The watershed boundaries showed the location of watersheds that supply communities with domestic water. These are meant to be used in conjunction with stream network map coverages from TRIM mapping. Attribute data for community watersheds can be downloaded into a spreadsheet or database
Manitoba Dikes
Provincial and Municipal Dikes in ManitobaDikes have been built to prevent flooding of communities and specific areas during runoff and flood events. This layer demonstrates the location of many provincial- and municipal-owned dikes in Manitoba; Elevations have been provided where they are known, and noted as “elevation under review” where they are uncertain.
New Brunswick Health Council Community Boundaries
Provides a provincial coverage of 33 NBHC communities. All communities are groupings of municipalities (Census subdivisions).

Regional and Community Vitality Index
The RVI/CVI database is derived from the CanEcumene 3.0 GDB (Eddy, et. al. 2023) using a selection of socio-economic variables identified in Eddy and Dort (2011) that aim to capture the overall state of socio-economic conditions of communities as ‘human habitats’. This dataset was developed primarily for application in mapping socio-economic conditions of communities and regions for environmental and natural resource management, climate change adaptation, Impact Assessments (IAs) and Regional Assessments (RAs), and Cumulative Effects Assessment (CEA).The RVI/CVI is comprised of five sub-indicators: 1) population change, 2) age structure, 3) education levels, 4) employment levels, and 5) real estate values. Index values are based on percentile ranks of each sub-indicator, and averaged for each community, and for three ranked groups: 1) all of Canada, 2) by province, and 3) by population size. The data covers the Census periods of 2001, 2006, 2011 (NHS), 2016, and 2021.The index is mapped in two ways: 1) as ‘points’ for individual communities (CVI), and 2) as ‘rasters’ for spatial interpolation of point data (RVI). These formats provide an alternative spatial framework to conventional StatsCan CSD framework.
