The Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators (CESI) program provides data and information to track Canada's performance on key environmental sustainability issues. Canada's conserved areas indicators report the amount and proportion of Canada's terrestrial (land and freshwater) and marine area that is recognized as conserved. Well-managed conserved areas are one way to protect wild species and their habitats for present and future generations. Habitat conservation is a measure of human response to the loss of biodiversity and natural habitat. As the area conserved in Canada increases, more lands and waters are withdrawn from direct human development stresses, thereby contributing to biodiversity conservation and improving the health of ecosystems. In turn, healthy ecosystems provide benefits such as clean water, mitigation of climate change, pollination and improved human health. Information is provided to Canadians in a number of formats including: static and interactive maps, charts and graphs, HTML and CSV data tables and downloadable reports. Pelagic Marine Ecounits are intended to describe the sea surface and water column. Two variables were selected to derive pelagic ecounits:1. Salinity and 2. Stratification. The British Columbia Marine Ecological Classification (BCMEC) is a hierarchical classification that delineates Provincial marine areas into Ecozones, Ecoprovinces, Ecoregions and Ecosections. The classification was developed from previous Federal and Provincial marine ecological classifications which were based on 1:2,000,000 scale information. The BCMEC has been developed for marine and coastal planning, resource management and a Provincial marine protected areas strategy. A new, smaller level of classification termed ecounits developed using 1:250,000 scale depth, current, exposure, subsurface relief and substrate was created to verify the larger ecosections, and to delineate their boundaries. CRIMS is a legacy dataset of BC coastal resource data that was acquired in a systematic and synoptic manner from 1979 and was intermittently updated throughout the years. Resource information was collected in nine study areas using a peer-reviewed provincial Resource Information Standards Committee consisting of DFO Fishery Officers, First Nations, and other subject matter experts. There are currently no plans to update this legacy data.

The RFI identifies areas of land and water encircling a recreation feature or combination of features that support, or have the potential to support, one or more recreation activities. These areas are rated for their significance or importance to recreation and for their sensitivity to alteration

Clause 7(3) of the Conservation Easements Act indicates that for a CE to be in effect a copy of an executed CE must be provided to the Ministry. Receipt of this document is recorded in this Lands Branch database and an Agreement number is assigned sequentially. An interest, based on the CE, must also be registered with ISC. Currently these two datasets are not reconciled. Technical Details: Conservation Easements are meant to protect native habitat on lands in the Province. The boundaries of the native habitat protected under a CE may not coincident with the parcel boundaries. However, the CE is identified to the larger parcel boundary. It is this parcel identification the is reflected in this spatial dataset. The Agreement Number is included which identifies the filing number under which detailed information can be found in digital and hardcopy within the Lands Branch of the Ministry of Environment.

Technical Details: Crown Conservation Easements are meant to protect wildlife habitat and ecological values on private titled lands in the Province. Crown Conservation Easements are registered as a condition of sale, on all Crown Wildlife Habitat Protection Act lands that are assessed as having Moderate ecological values. A CCE is registered to a numbered parcel. It is this parcel identification that is reflected in this spatial dataset. The Agreement Number is included which identifies the filing number under which detailed information can be found in digital and hardcopy within the Fish, Wildlife & Lands Branch of the Ministry of Environment.
