Contaminants in fish database
The contaminants in fish database is a compilation of contaminant data analysed from fish tissue at the Fresh Water Institute from 1970 to 2005. Data include lab number, region, analysis, organs, species, lake, form (whole fish, headon dressed, headless dressed), weight, and length and contaminant concentrations. Total mercury was the predominant contaminant measured. Results were expressed as ppm or ppb based on the parameter analyzed. Concentrations are expressed based on wet weight.
Waste Management Attenuation Zone
A "contaminant attenuation zone" is a three-dimensional zone that is, * located on land adjacent to a landfilling site, * in the subservice or extends into the subsurface, and * is used or is intended to be used for the attenuation of contaminants from the landfilling site to levels that will not have an unacceptable impact beyond the boundary of the zone. This product requires the use of geographic information system (GIS) software.
Air Contaminant Emissions Registry
Under the Regulation Respecting the Mandatory Reporting of Certain Contaminant Emissions into the Atmosphere (RDOECA), the Ministère de l'Environnement et de la Lutte contre les Changements Climates de la Faune et des Parcs collects data on air contaminants emitted by Quebec businesses in particular. Thus, any person or municipality operating an establishment that emits air contaminants above thresholds into the atmosphere is required to report its emissions no later than June 1 of each year. This dataset includes emissions of air contaminants reported under RDOECA or voluntarily expressed in metric tons, with the exception of dioxin and furan emissions, which are expressed in metric tons of toxic equivalents.**This third party metadata element was translated using an automated translation tool (Amazon Translate).**
Bird Health and Toxicology, Oil Sands Region
Tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) nest boxes are installed in oil sands area and in reference locations to monitor contaminant levels and impacts on tree swallow nestlings. The exposure to tree swallow nestlings to air-borne oil sands-related contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is assessed using passive air samplers. Measures of avian health are examined in relation to location of sampling and contaminants measured.
Maps of reporting facilities – criteria air contaminants
The National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) is Canada's public inventory of pollutant releases (to air, water and land), disposals and transfers for recycling. The files below contain a map of Canada showing the locations of all facilities that reported direct releases of Criteria Air Contaminants to the NPRI. The data are for the most recent reporting year, by reported total quantities of these releases. The map is available in both ESRI REST (to use with ARC GIS) and WMS (open source) formats. For more information about the individual reporting facilities, a dataset is available in a CSV format. Please consult the following resources to enhance your analysis:- Guide on using and Interpreting NPRI Data: https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/national-pollutant-release-inventory/using-interpreting-data.html - Access additional data from the NPRI, including datasets and mapping products: https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/national-pollutant-release-inventory/tools-resources-data/exploredata.html
Wild Bird and Hunter-Trapper Harvested Wildlife Toxicology and Contaminants, Oil Sands Region
Waterfowl and mammals harvested and trapped at various locations in the oil sands region and in reference locations are assessed for contaminant burdens and toxicology. Wildlife samples are obtained from local hunters and trappers. Tissue samples are analysed for concentrations of oil sands-related contaminants (heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and naphthenic acids). Dead and moribund birds collected from tailing ponds are also evaluated for levels and effects of contaminants.
Water well capture zones
Well capture zones are intended to identify potential areas of risk to aquifers where the release of contaminants could affect the water quality of community wells. The information was compiled as a discreet project under the 'Yukon Water Strategy' and represents a 'snapshot in time' of the Drinking Water Systems. Well capture zones were identified using a combination of buffers, analytical methods, and groundwater flow modelling using the Waterloo Hydrogeologic Inc. Visual MODFLOW.Distributed from [GeoYukon](https://yukon.ca/geoyukon) by the [Government of Yukon](https://yukon.ca/maps) . Niagara River Caged Mussel Biomonitoring Program
Data are contaminants in tissue of caged mussels put in the river for 3 weeks at about 25 stations located on the Canadian and US side of the river. The main objective of the study is to identify contaminant sources, or source areas requiring more detailed follow-up investigations, based on the level of contaminants in the mussels. Compounds monitored include: * organochlorinated pesticides * Polychlorinated biphenyls * dioxins/furan * chlorinated benzenes * Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons * industrial organic compounds
Aquifer Vulnerability Index
The Aquifer Vulnerability Index (AVI) is a method of assessing the vulnerability of aquifers to surface contaminants in Alberta. An aquifer is a geological formation that is permeable enough to transmit sufficient quantities of water to possible to support the development of water wells. In the assessment of aquifer vulnerability to potential contamination, the depth to the aquifer and the types of geological materials above them are considered. For example, aquifers closer to the surface overlain with pervious surface materials are more vulnerable to contaminants, as compared to aquifers found deeper and covered with a thick layer of impervious material. The AVI ratings indicate the potential of surficial materials to transmit water withy contaminants to the aquifer over a period of time. This data was created in 2002 using ArcGIS.
Chemicals Management Plan: Wildlife Monitoring and Surveillance Program, terrestrial
The Wildlife Contaminants Monitoring and Surveillance Program assesses contaminant exposure in terrestrial wildlife across Canada. Biological samples, including eggs and tissues, from the sentinel species European starlings are collected and provide a complementary perspective on contaminant exposure in terrestrial and urban-associated ecosystems. This monitoring evaluates spatial and temporal trends in contaminant levels within these environments.
