This digital product is developed from a database of published abandoned mine openings for the province of Nova Scotia. The database is maintained by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, Geoscience and Mines Branch. The database provides approximate coordinate locations for many of the abandoned mine openings, and also provides a source reference on each mine opening.

This database aggregates basic information on orphaned and abandoned mine sites from participating Canadian jurisdictions, including their name, location, jurisdiciton, and the commodity that was mined. It was originally created in 2012 through the National Orphaned/Abandoned Mines Initiative and has undergone several updates since that time. Data on sites in each jurisdiction is owned and maintained by that jurisdiction. The database includes links to the corresponding records in that jursidiction. While the database includes common informaiton about all sites, there may be discrepancies in the types of data provided about sites in different jurisdictions and data from some jurisdictions may be updated more frequently than others.

This polygonal dataset represents authorized applications for a Mines Act permit known as a Permitted Mine Area (PMA). This dataset can be used in combination with the NoW point dataset which represents both applications for a Mines Act permit and issued authorizations for mining activities proposed in the application. **The regional mine PMA dataset is not complete for all mine sites in BC. This greenhouse gas emissions dataset shows area fugitive emission from tailings ponds and mine face at the oil sands mining facilities in Alberta. The data were reported between 2011 and 2021 under the Technology Innovation and Emission Reduction Regulation and preceding regulations in Alberta. The produced bitumen and the diluent flared/wasted volumes reported in the Alberta Energy Regulator's statistical report ST-39 are included in the dataset for reference.
