The Public Land Use Zone (PLUZ) dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent Public Land Use Zones in Alberta. A Public Land Use Zone is an area of land to which legislative controls are applied to achieve particular land management objectives identified in a guiding land and resource plan. They can be used to protect areas containing sensitive resources such as wildlife and their habitats, vegetation, soils and watersheds as well as to separate or manage conflicting recreational activities. These areas have been designated as Public Land Use Zones, under the authority of Section 178 and 208 of the Public Lands Administration Regulation (PLAR) under the Public Lands Act. Public Land Use Zones were formerly known as Forest Land Use Zones (FLUZ) which were designated under the former Forest Recreation Regulation under the Forests Act. The Public Lands Administration Regulation came into effect on September 12, 2011. At this time, Forest Land Use Zones under the Forest Recreation Regulation were incorporated into the Public Lands Act and Public Lands Administration Regulation. As a result, Forest Land Use Zone became Public Land Use Zone.

The Public Land Recreation Area dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent Public Land Recreation Areas in Alberta. A Public Land Recreation Area is an area of recreation land designated under the authority of Section 179 of the Public Lands Administration Regulation under the Public Lands Act. Public Land Recreation Area was formerly known as Forest Recreation Area under the Forest Recreation Regulation under the Forests Act. No changes to the Forest Recreation Area data layer were made when it was migrated to become the Public Land Recreation Area dataset.

A Crown land reservation is a tool under Section 18(c) of the Public Lands Act, to identify a management intent that will inform and provide direction to potential land users and regulatory bodies as authorized under the Public Lands Act. A reservation is not a disposition, does not grant any rights to public land or rights to access or occupy public land or rights to the resources on the land or under it. The Crown Land Reservations dataset displays reservations under application or active with their associated data attributes allowing users to view and access existing or proposed reservation information that could influence their application if a proposed activity intersects. Territories in the domain of the State over which granted rights include wood volume assignments defined by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests (MRNF).There are different types of rights granted depending on the purpose (s) of use (s): -Guarantees of supply (GA), wood harvesting permits for the purpose of supplying a wood processing plant (PRAU), biomass PRAU (PRBIO) and delegation agreements (EDs) on the local forest (FP) or on residual forest territories allow forest management activities according to the various legal documents issued by the MRNF.-Education and Research Forests (FER) allow forest management activities for teaching and research purposes according to the contract issued by the MRNF.-The Duchesnay Forest Station (STF) allows forest management activities for teaching, research and tourism purposes according to the contract issued by the MRNF.-Territorial management agreements (CGT) on residual forest territories allow forest management activities and land management in accordance with the agreement issued by the MRNF.-Category 1 (TC1) lands are subject to property rights under conditions dedicated to Indigenous nations under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement and provide a framework for forest management activities. __Important:__ The MRNF does not issue any forest rights on these lands but the volume associated with the forest possibility of these lands is recorded in the SYMPA system.These territorial data come from the MRNF STF system, which is __the official source__ of this geographic information, except for residual forest territories with management agreements (CGT) as well as category 1 land (TC1). Active __granted rights__ are established according to the MRNF SYMPA system. It is possible to identify the various beneficiaries __of active rights only__, i.e. from the STF_beneficiaries table. This table is fed by the SYMPA system, which establishes forest rights and the volumes allocated to them. The Fees Within Soil Zones dataset is comprised of polygons representing the Soil Zones in Alberta that are used with Ministerial Order 49/2026 to allow users to determine public lands fees, rents and other charges for public lands dispositions.

Productive forest land base is defined as the total Crown forest area, determined by subtracting the following from the total area of the Cariboo Natural Resource Region: * All non-Crown land * All Crown land committed to non-timber use through a Land Act designation * All non-forest Crown Land, and * All forest area classified as brush or non-commercial cover in the Forest Inventory. This dataset is a spatial representation of the boundary for the Kananaskis Conservation Pass for which a written legal description will be created. Visit alberta.ca/ConservationPass or albertaparks.ca for more information about the Kananaskis Conservation Pass, including a map. The pass will be in effect for both parks and public land within this boundary, pending Bill 64, the Public Lands Amendment Act passing in the legislature. The area includes Parks, Recreation Areas, Public Land, and the Public Land Use Zone (PLUZ). It excludes the McLean Creek P.R.A., Fisher Creek P.R.A., and the McLean Off-highway Vehicle Use Zone. The Public Lands Camping Pass for random camping on the Eastern Slopes does not apply to public land in the Kananaskis Conservation Pass area.

The Metis Settlement is a dataset comprised of all the polygons that represent Metis Settlements lands in Alberta. Metis Settlements are lands set apart by provincial legislation for the use and benefit of the members of the eight Metis Settlements in Alberta. The legal title of these lands rests with the Metis Settlements General Council, a legislated-body that holds the fee simple interest on all Metis settlement lands, equivalent to full ownership of the land, with certain limited rights reserved for the Crown. The provincial government has primary jurisdiction over these lands and the people living on them.

The Grazing Rental Zones is comprised of two polygons which determine which zone a grazing disposition (GRL, FGL, GRP) is in. These zones are used to apply the rental rate that grazing leases (GRL), grazing licenses (FGL) and grazing permits (GRP) pay to the government of Alberta for use of public lands. The Public Lands Modernization (Grazing Lease and Obsolete Provisions) Amendment Act came into force January 1, 2020. Under the new rental rate framework (Ministerial Order 01/2020), there are now two grazing rental rate zones based on the transition of the boreal region of the province. The North Saskatchewan River is the dividing line between the south (Zone 1) and north (Zone 2).

This is a dynamic dataset - data can change daily.Other Land includes land that has been purchased by the First Nations from private landowners or Surplus Provincial or Surplus Federal land that has been purchased from the Manitoba or Canada governments. The title to the land is privately held by a First Nation corporation until it gets transferred to the Government of Canada, however the mines and minerals and other residual interests may be owned by the Crown (Government of Manitoba) and they are required to be transferred to the Government of Canada (subject to third party interest resolution, if applicable).The sites are generally identified by title with reference to a plan of survey, metes and bounds description. Locations are mapped using existing cadastral or parcel mapping data, or reasonably illustrate the site within the dataset.
