Overland Flood Alerts
Current weather induced overland flood alertsThe Hydrologic Forecast Centre (HFC) issues several categories of flood alert throughout the year including riverine flooding due to snowmelt and rainfall, wind and wave induced shoreline flooding and ice pileup, and rainfall induced overland flooding. This layer demonstrates the location and/or extend of current alerts due to rainfall induced overland flooding. The types are defined below:Overland Flood Warning: A severe weather warning that is issued to alert the public that overland flooding is imminent or occurring in the warned area. Overland flooding is a quick onset of flood conditions, usually occurring after heavy rain that may not be linked to a specific waterway or lake. Rainfall intensity and duration, topography, soil conditions and ground cover are factors impacting overland flooding. Overland flooding can also occur because of a sudden release of water held by an ice jam.Overland Flood Watch: A severe weather watch that is issued when conditions are favourable for overland flooding. Normally issued when significant rainfall is expected in locations with saturated soil.
Historic - Flood Susceptibility Mapping
This series of historic flood susceptibility maps comes from an XGBboost machine learning model trained on major floods from 2005 to 2023. The trained model is then run for each year from 2000 to 2023, including unique temporal characteristics of temperature, precipitation, land use land cover and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), to predict the flood susceptibility of any given year. This dataset forms part of a broader collection of flood susceptibility datasets, offering related information and analyses. The collection includes an overview page with associated publications, historic susceptibility values, temporal trends, and future projections.- [Collection – Flood Susceptibility Mapping]( https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/1074f781-85d3-4c86-86cb-fd1c339197dc)- [Trends and Extremes – Flood Susceptibility Mapping]( https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/3202e0a0-0afb-4120-b102-b0c41f0fb9eb)- [Future - Flood Susceptibility Mapping]( https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/c00f95a3-7bab-4d28-b9cc-b30f06b5afd2)

Historical Flood Events (HFE)
Representation of the causes of flooding events in the form of multiple points. The point groupings correspond to the set of locations that were affected by the same event. The inventory of past flooding events was compiled from various public sources and standardized into a common data model. Sources used are included in the data. Event locations have been extensively revised to have one location per location reported as affected by the flood. Flood events for which no location was included in the sources used are positioned on the place name of the location affected by the flood. The event positions do not indicate where the flooding occurred. Flood events that affected more than one locality are represented by a multipoint. For each event after January 1, 1980 caused by a heavy rainfall or a coastal storm , a precipitation analysis document, a precipitation animation and the precipitation data are available. These documents are the result of a collaboration with Environment and Climate Change Canada.Disclaimer:It should be noted that no consultation was conducted with the various providers and stakeholders of the historic flood data. Disparities in content among the various sources result in an incomlete product. No warranty is given as to the accuracy or completeness of the information provided. The absence of information does not mean that no flooding has occurred.
Manitoba River Conditions and Forecasts Web App
The lightweight web app shows the locations of several river and lake stations where water levels and/or flow data are collected in Manitoba. The web map shows the locations of several river and lake stations where water levels and/or flow data are collected. When you click on a location on this map, a pop-up box will appear. The pop-up box contains various water level and/or flow data, as well as forecast information. Please note these conditions regarding the information contained in the pop-up boxes:The information on this map is updated daily at 1:00 pm during the spring runoff period, based on water levels and flows collected earlier in the morning. The water levels and flows should be considered preliminary data as they could be affected by ice, wind, or monitoring equipment malfunctions. While the department undertakes due diligence in utilizing this data, final quality control checked data is published by Water Survey of Canada, our main data provider, after the spring runoff. Forecasted peak information is the most recent data available. Forecasts are evaluated daily and any updates are included in the Daily Flood Sheets and the Flood Report; both of these are available on the Manitoba Flood Forecast website. If the updated forecasts will not be available until later in the afternoon, the forecasted peak information in the pop-up boxes will be from yesterday’s Daily Flood Sheets.Pop-up boxes include the following information: Station Name: station name where the water level and/or flow data are collected Station ID: unique identifier for the station Flood Alert: indicates if the current water level is over the flood stage, over the river bank but below the flood stage, or below the river bank. Last Update: date that water level and/or flow data was collected Flow: measured or calculated flow in cubic feet per second Level: measured water level in feet Forecasted Flow: the forecasted peak flow in cubic feet per second Forecasted Level: the water level at the forecasted peak in feet Peak Date: date when the peak is forecasted to occur Flood Stage (dike level) (ft): the water level (ft) at which flow overtops community flood protection dike-structures Bankfull Capacity - flow (cfs): the approximate flow (in cubic feet per second) when the water level is at the top of the bank Bankfull Capacity - level (ft): the water level (in feet) when the water is at the top of the bank Reference Years: years when the peak water levels were similar to the forecasted peak water level this year“Flood Alert” definitions: Flood Warning: A flood warning is issued when water levels are above or expected to be above channel capacity within the next 24 hours, resulting in minor to major flooding. Water is beyond the channel capacity and expected to flood adjacent areas, agricultural fields and/or infrastructure in the area. High Water Advisory / Flood Watch: A high water advisory is issued when water levels are above seasonal levels. A High Water Advisory can be an early indicator for conditions that may develop into a Flood Watch. A flood watch is issued when water levels are nearing channel capacity, but not expected to reach channel capacity within the next 24 hours. Minor to no flooding is expected at these levels, but water may begin to overflow into nearby low-lying marshland, parkland or floodplain areas with little to no impact. A Flood Watch can be an early indicator for conditions that may develop into a Flood Warning. Above Community Flood Protection Level: Water levels are above or projected to be above the community dike levels within 24 hours, causing major flooding.
Flood markers
The Department of Homeland Security (MSI) supports the development of flood risk knowledge. Flood markers make it possible to illustrate the water level reached during a very major flood and thus to raise public awareness of the risks associated with it while maintaining this awareness of risk in the collective memory. __What is a flood marker? __A flood marker is a physical mark (15 cm in diameter for the standard) testifying to the maximum level reached by a watercourse during a very significant flood on a given date. The flood marker is usually located at a permanent location and is easily visible to everyone, for example on the wall of a building or on a dedicated pole.__Point data set “Flood markers” __ The “Flood reference” data set contains, for each marker, the location, the date of the reference flood and the maximum water level reached. The list of all attributes is provided in the dataset description sheet (Additional Information section).Despite the quality of the work carried out, the Ministry of Homeland Security cannot guarantee the absence of errors in the data.__Related datasets__ The “Flood Water Levels” dataset produced by the Ministry of Homeland Security also contains maximum water levels reached during a flood. The link to this dataset is provided in the _Documentation_ section.**This third party metadata element was translated using an automated translation tool (Amazon Translate).**
Canada Flood Map Inventory (CFM)
The Canada Flood Map inventory shows areas in Canada where a copy of a flood hazard map has been collected by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). The inventory does not display flood zones or extents, but provides information on how to access these flood hazard maps. Depending on the license and availability status to the public, there may be links for download, along with reference information to the original source and/or data owner. NRCan collaborates with provincial and territorial governments to gather flood hazard maps from provinces, territories, municipalities, and other agencies responsible for flood mapping. The inventory is regularly updated to improve its completeness and accuracy. Disclaimer: The Canada Flood Map (CFM) does not include every flood hazard map in Canada and may be incomplete or contain inaccuracies. It should not be relied upon as the official source of flood mapping information. Furthermore, if a map appears to be missing, this does not necessarily mean that the area has never been mapped. For the official version of a map, updated information, or confirmation of applicable regulations, please contact the local authority responsible for flood mapping.Note: Data and maps in the Inventory can be made available upon request to federal and contributing partners.

Red River Flood - 2009
The purpose of this feature layer is to provide the 2009 overland flooding boundary in the Red River Valley. This dataset shows the extent of peak overland flooding in the Red River Valley in 20 09 . Data is based on RADARSAT – 1 satellite imagery. During processing, the raw data set was resampled to 12.5 meter pixel resolution, then classified using PCI Geomatica software which is a specialized software designed to manipulate space born imagery. The final output depicting the flooding boundary is available as a TIFF or Shapefile. Launched in November 1995, RADARSAT-1 was a Canadian-led project which provided useful information to both commercial and scientific users in such fields as disaster management, agriculture, cartography, hydrology, forestry, oceanography, ice studies and coastal monitoring. Equipped with a powerful synthetic aperture radar (SAR) instrument, it acquired images of the Earth day or night, in all weather and through cloud cover, smoke and haze. As of March 2013, the satellite was declared non-operational and is no longer collecting data. Many applications were developed to take advantage of RADARSAT-1 capacity for detecting the presence of water. These included monitoring flooding and the build-up of river ice, and mapping the melting of snow-covered areas. When used for flood monitoring, RADARSAT-1 data helped assess the impact of flooding, predicted the extent and duration of floodwaters, analyzed the environmental impact of water diversion projects, and developed flood mitigation measures.
