Benthic Species Presence/Absence in the Lower Bay of Fundy Derived From High Resolution Video and Still Imagery
Funded through DFO's Strategic Program for Ecosystem-based Research and Advice (SPERA), this benthic survey covers several seabed areas adjacent to Deer Island and Campobello Island, the Wolves Islands, and Grand Manan (NB) over a two-year study period (2016-2017). One hundred and fifty drift camera transects were completed within the ~91 sq-km study region collecting continuous high-definition video with periodic 4K resolution video (provided by a downward facing Blackmagic Production Camera 4K equipped with video lights). A Nikon D800 36.1 megapixel digital still imagery camera (equipped with a studio strobe light) captured seafloor images at ~30s intervals over a maximum 25-minute drift survey period. The camera was triggered by lowering the camera frame within 1 m of the seabed, releasing tension on a trigger weight suspended below the frame. Camera location was tracked using an ultra-short baseline acoustic positioning system (Tracklink 1500HA transceiver with 1505B transponder on the camera frame). Species presence/absence, abundance, and bottom type was recorded manually using PhotoQuad v1.4 software. An average field of view of 0.7 x 0.5 m was determined from a subset of digital still images within which the 10 cm diameter trigger weight was fully in view. Thirty-eight key and common species were described using explicit taxonomic identifiers, while other species were recorded within broader general categories (e.g. unidentified Cnidaria). Identification was made to the lowest possible taxonomic level. Primary bottom-type was defined as the grain size with the most percent coverage for each image/video interval. Grain size limits were determined using the Wentworth scale.Cite this data as: Lawton P. Biodiversity of the benthic surveys in the Manicouagan region in 2006, 2007 and 2008
Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) selected the Manicouagan Peninsula area as a site of interest for the possible establishment of a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in 1998. With this in mind, DFO conducted surveys to assess benthic biodiversity between 2006 and 2008. During the various campaigns, more than a hundred stations were sampled using various tools to target epibenthic and endobenthic species. Various tools were used during the three years of sampling, including an SM (Smith-McIntyre) grab with an area of 0.1 m² and a height of 20 cm, an IKU-type grab with a surface area of 1.5 m² and a height of 50 cm, and a hydraulic dredge measuring 1.36 m wide and 0.66 m high with a net mesh size of 2.3 cm. As the dredge clogged fairly quickly, small organisms were collected in abundance. In 2006 and 2007, a camera mounted on a sled pulled by a boat along transects of varying lengths depending on the sampling campaign collected images (3,008 x 2,000 pixels) every 10 seconds, representing a seabed area of 40 x 40 cm.The data are presented in Darwin Core format in the file “donnees_manicouagan_data” The available data include taxonomic identifications of samples (individuals collected or identified in images) as well as metadata related to stations, including sampling date, depth, and geographic coordinates. Please note that the depths are for informational purposes only, since the bathymetry is very steep in this region.Further details on sampling can be found in the following report: Provencher, L et Nozères, C. 2011. Macroalgae in the coastal zone of maritime Quebec
Macroalgae dominated areas with a vegetated cover above 25%, located in the coastal zone of the Estuary and the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Quebec)This dataset was designed for Environment and Climate Change Canada's (ECCC) National Environmental Emergencies Center (NEEC) for oil spill preparedness and response. The polygons of this layer were selected from the surface geodatabase of coastal ecosystems from the UQAR-MPO project Mapping coastal ecosystems of the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence. Are represented in this dataset exclusively the polygons whose plant dominance corresponds to a class of macroalgae and presenting a semi-vegetated (25-75%) or vegetated (75-100%) cover. The study area includes all of the estuarine and maritime coasts of Quebec, with the exception of certain sectors, including most of the Lower North Shore and Anticosti Island, with the exception of villages of Kegaska, la Romaine, Chevery, Blanc-Sablon and Port-Menier. Some islands off the estuary and gulf coasts are part of the region covered, such as Île d'Orléans, Isle-aux-Coudres, Île Verte and Île Bonaventure. The mapping of coastal ecosystems was carried out jointly by the Laboratory for Dynamics and Integrated Coastal Zone Management (LDGIZC) of the University of Quebec at Rimouski as part of the Coastal Resilience Project (https: //ldgizc.uqar.ca/Web/projets/projet-resilience-cotiere) funded by the MELCC; and by the Fisheries and Oceans Canada team, as part of its Integrated marine response planning (IMRP) component of the Oceans Protection Plan (OPP),with the objective of updating the Marine Oil Spill Preparedness and Response Regime of Canada. The master geodatabase of coastal ecosystems is hosted and distributed by UQAR on their SIGEC-Web mapping platform: https://ldgizc.uqar.ca/Web/sigecwebThe macroalgae characterization was mainly carried out from the photo-interpretation of RGBI aerial photos acquired by the DFO (2015-2022) and oblique helicopter photos acquired by UQAR in 2017. Data from 3155 sampling stations, conducted aboard small boats during DFO field campaigns (2017-2023) were used to detail the nature of algal communities and validate the photo-interpretation.Credits © UQAR-MPO (2025, Laboratoire de dynamique et de gestion intégrée des zones côtières, Pêches et Océans Canada)RéférenceProvencher-Nolet, L., Paquette, L., Pitre, L.D., Grégoire, B. and Desjardins, C. 2024. Bay of Fundy Benthoscape
The data layer (.shp) presented is the result of an unsupervised classification method for classifying seafloor habitat in the Bay of Fundy (Northwest Atlantic, Canada). This method involves separating environmental variables derived from multibeam bathymetry (slope, bathymetric position index), backscatter, and oceanographic information (wave-shear current velocity) into spatial units (i.e. image objects) and classifying the acoustically and oceanographically separated units into 7 habitat classes (Bedrock and Boulders, Mixed Sediments, Gravelly Sand, Sand, Silty Gravel with Anemones, Silt, and Tidal Scoured Mixed Sediments) using in-situ data (imagery). Benthoscape classes (synonymous to landscape classifications in terrestrial ecology) describe the geomorphology and biology of the seafloor and are derived from elements of the seafloor that were acoustically and oceanographically distinguishable. Summer surface conditions – Multidisciplinary surveys
Mean 2013 to 2022 summer surface conditions in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence. Data come from the August and the September multidisciplinary surveys. Surface conditions are described by temperature, salinity and nutrient concentration (mmol/m³) interpolated on a 10 km x 10 km grid.PurposeSince 1990, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans has been conducting an annual multidisciplinary survey in the Estuary and northern Gulf of St. Lawrence using a standardized protocol. In the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, these bottom trawl surveys has been carrying out each September since 1971. These missions are an important source of information about the status of the marine ressources. The objectives of the surveys are multiple: to estimate the abundance and biomass of groundfish and invertebrates, to identify the spatial distribution and biological characteristics of these species, to monitor the biodiversity of the Estuary and Gulf and finally, to describe the environmental conditions observed in the area at the moment of the sampling. The southern Gulf surveys are realized using the following standardized protocol:Hurlbut,T. and D.Clay (eds) 1990. Protocols for Research Vessel Cruises within the Gulf Region (Demersal Fish) (1970-1987). Can. MS Rep. Fish. Aquat. Sci. No. 2082: 143p.The sampling protocols used for the Estuary and northern Gulf surveys are described in details in the following publications:Bourdages, H., Archambault, D., Bernier, B., Fréchet, A., Gauthier, J., Grégoire, F., Lambert, J., et Savard, L. 2010. High-resolution climate projection data for Marine Protected Areas in the Maritimes
This dataset provides refined monthly climatological projections for six key ocean variables: surface and bottom temperature, surface and bottom salinity, mixed layer depth, and bottom current speed. The projections are provided for six Maritime Marine Protected Areas: the Gully, the Laurentian Channel, St. Anns Bank, Musquash Estuary, Banc-des-Américains, and Basin Head. These projections are based on downscaled outputs from 22 CMIP6 models under four emissions scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5) for four 20-year periods spanning 2020 to 2099 (2020–2039, 2040–2059, 2060–2079, and 2080–2099).For each model and scenario, 20-year climatological means were computed for each future period. These climatologies were then aggregated to produce ensemble means and ensemble standard deviations for all variables. The released dataset includes only these ensemble summary fields and is provided as gridded data with dimensions longitude × latitude × scenario × time.Cite this data as: Wang., Z.
