Defining Distinct Nearshore Marine Biotopes Coastwide in British Columbia Canada
To ensure informed decision-making, management, and conservation of marine ecosystems along the British Columbia (BC) coastline, a comprehensive understanding of marine communities and habitats is necessary. Marine planning initiatives, including environmental incident response planning and the development of a marine protected area network, have long been challenged by significant gaps in our knowledge of the distribution of many nearshore marine species. This lack of critical information can impede our ability to effectively manage and protect vulnerable species and ecosystems. We developed a set of species distribution models (single-SDMs) using data collected from the benthic habitat mapping survey. These models correlate species occurrence data with environmental variables. We used these models to make predictions of the probability of occurrence of each species across the entire BC coast. A cluster analysis of the single-SDM predictions was then used to determine biotopes, which are distinct combinations of physical and chemical water properties and associated biological communities. We defined and mapped the spatial distribution and probability of nine nearshore macrofauna epibenthic biotopes along with three physiotopes based on environmental conditions. The definition of the biotopes includes correlated species, the type of substrate, and range of environmental conditions (slope, depth, current, temperature, salinity, and tidal current) occurring within each biotope. The biotopes defined here are a first, but important, step in quantitative bioregionalization for the Pacific region as the resolution of nearshore marine community information has been lacking in BC and has hindered marine spatial initiatives. This dataset contains 71 of the 72 single-SDMs (which excludes Northern abalone, an endangered species), the spatial distribution of 9 biotopes and 3 physiotopes, and the species richness calculated as the sum of occurrence probabilities across all 72 species.
Bathymetric compilation for Scotian Shelf and Newfoundland-Labrador Shelves bioregions, offshore Atlantic Canada
The Marine Geoscience for Marine Spatial Planning (MGMSP) program, implemented byNatural Resources Canada (NRCan), is an initiative with the goal of offering innovativeregional geoscience products to support the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) intheir Marine Spatial Planning endeavors. To develop spatial management plans for variousexpansive bioregions across Canada, the DFO has undertaken the task of creatingcomprehensive ocean management strategies. Presently, the MGMSP program isconcentrating its efforts on two significant bioregions, namely the Scotian Shelf andNewfoundland and Labrador Shelves bioregions.In pursuit of this objective, the work presented in this report has focused on theassimilation and gridding of numerous disparate bathymetry datasets sourced fromauthoritative and reliable channels. The purpose of this comprehensive data gatheringapproach is to establish a unified bathymetric grid, with a consistent spatial resolution,which can be utilized in both oceanographic modeling and geological interpretation. Bycollating information from a diverse range of sources, we aim to create a comprehensiveand reliable foundation that will enable accurate and informed decision-making in the fieldof marine spatial planning, as well as enhance the accuracy and reliability of subsequentanalyses and simulations.
Marine mammal records collected by the At-Sea Observer program in Arctic, Newfoundland and Labrador and Maritimes regions
Records of marine mammal sightings (N = 5,324) collected by ASOs and submitted to Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) between 1979-2024, across three DFO regions: the Arctic, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Maritimes. Methods for initial data compilation are provided in the associated technical report "Marine mammal records collected by the at-sea observer (ASO) program in Arctic, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Maritimes regions: a summary of challenges and opportunities for future research." Musquash benthic infauna
As part of the Musquash Marine Protected Area (MPA) Monitoring Plan, this project was implemented to establish a baseline for infaunal biodiversity for this area. Data collection began in 2010 and contributed monitoring information for productivity, biodiversity, and habitat indicators within the Musquash Harbour. A 1500 cubic centimetre ponar benthic grab was deployed at 30 random stations distributed over three strata (channel, intertidal and subtidal). Samples were to be collected up to three times per year to account for seasonality and annual variation. Once collected the benthic samples were analyzed for changes in grain size, carbon content (Loss on ignition), species abundance/diversity and biomass.Cite this data as: Cooper, J.A., and Blanchard, M. Polygons of inland water bodies of the Magdalen Islands Lagoons Marine Refuge
This cartographic dataset represents a geomorphological update of the boundaries of the five inland water bodies that form the Magdalen Islands Marine Refuge. It was produced by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) as part of its marine refuge characterization work.The data used comes from the August 15, 2022 version of the Quebec maritime Geospatial Database of Coastal Ecosystems (GDB), developed from various sources including satellite and airborne images from 2019 (Jobin et al. 2021; Provencher-Nolet et al. 2024). The boundaries of the inland water bodies were defined according to the upper high tide line, which represents the maximum extent of the water during the highest tides.The final product is a polygonal shapefile representing the five inland water bodies of the marine refuge as well as the terrestrial areas of the archipelago. The data are projected in NAD83 / MTM zone 4.For more information on the method used to generate this layer from the GDB, see Grégoire et al. (2026). The method used to create the source geospatial data is described in Jobin et al. (2021) and Provencher-Nolet et al. (2024).
Ecological Classification of the Coastal Territory of the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence in Quebec
In 2009, DFO defined 12 marine bioregions across the three oceans bordering Canada to support its marine planning efforts, such as the establishment of networks of marine protected areas. However, these bioregions cover vast areas and exhibit significant ecological heterogeneity, especially along the coasts. Yet, this heterogeneity in coastal ecosystems often needs to be considered at the local scale, particularly for management and conservation purposes.The objective of this exercise is to subdivide the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence (EGSL) bioregion for the province of Quebec into coastal sub-bioregions to better reflect local and regional coastal characteristics. The coastal classification presented in this report is based on the integration of four existing classification systems for the EGSL, which were not specifically designed for classifying coastal ecosystems. Integrating these classification systems into a single approach allowed us to define 13 coastal sub-bioregions for the EGSL. Data presented here are the limit of the 13 ecoregions made from this work. A technical report is available for more details. Benthic Habitat Mapping Database
The purpose of the survey is to document and record habitat types and associated algae and marine invertebrate species in a variety of habitat types. Transect locations are randomly selected throughout the study area, which rotates between the north and south coasts of British Columbia on a biannual basis. Transects are laid perpendicular to the shoreline. A team of two divers swim the transect with data sheets to collect habitat, algae and marine invertebrate data as detailed below in the methods section. Data is keypunched in an MS Access database that can be queried for species observations and environmental information.This dataset includes three tables pulled from the original database containing observations by species, observations by quadrat, and additional header information for each observation. All three tables can be linked by the field HKey. Three lookup tables are included as well, one for algae, one for invertebrates, and one for substrates.
Hydrocarbon resource assessment of Nares Strait and central Ellesmere Island, Nunavut
GIS compilation of data used to perform the stacked cumulative chance of success (resource potential map) in Open file 9163. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has been tasked, under the Marine Conservation Targets (MCT) initiative announced in Budget 2016, with evaluating the petroleum resource potential for areas identified for possible protection as part of the Government of Canada's commitment to conserve 10% of its marine areas by 2020. As part of this initiative, NRCan's Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) conducted a broad regional study of the petroleum potential over the majority of the Magdalen Basin, which is the principal geological basin in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. The GSC resource assessment is visually represented by a qualitative petroleum potential map. Disclaimer: A simplified colored version of the map is displayed on the Web Mapping Service (WMS). The correct version is available for download through the Federal Geospatial Platform (FGP) and GEOSCAN.
Beaufort Sea Marine Fishes Project (BSMFP) 2014 - Fish identification and measurements
PURPOSE:From August 1st to September 11th, 2014, Fisheries and Oceans Canada conducted a baseline survey of marine fishes and their habitats in the southern Canadian Beaufort Sea and Amundsen Gulf as part of the Beaufort Regional Environmental Assessment (BREA) called the Beaufort Sea Marine Fishes Project (BSMFP). Sampling was conducted from the F/V Frosti at 54 stations along 14 transects. Standardized sampling was conducted at pre-determined depth stations (20-1500 m) using benthic trawling nets. The BSMFP is the first research project to use large research trawls to assess the biodiversity and abundance of offshore marine fishes in this area. In total, 42 species of fish were caught. This report contains information on fishing net deployments, catch per unit effort (CPUE), and basic biological data for all fishes caught.DESCRIPTION:Basic biological data for all fish caught during the 2014 BSMFP expedition.
