The toponymic features of the CanVec series include proper nouns designating places and representations of the territory. This data come from provincial, territorial and Canadian toponymic databases. They are used in the CanVec Series for cartographic reference purposes and vary according to the scale of display. The toponymic features of the CanVec series can differ from the Canada's official geographical names.The CanVec multiscale series is available as prepackaged downloadable files and by user-defined extent via a Geospatial data extraction tool. Terrestrial Ecosystem Information Scanned Map Boundary
STE_SCANNED_MAP_BOUNDARY_SP includes an index of the mapsheet grid location of Soils, Terrain, Ecosystems and related scanned maps (including Agriculture Capability and Climate Capability maps). These maps are intended for on-screen viewing or printing. The majority of the maps have been geo-referenced. Mapping may not cover the whole map grid area. Some maps are interim or draft and may have been superseded. Some files are of related legends and map project text. Associated scanned map boundary attributes describe the project map (project level metadata) and provide a link for downloading the map, plus links to related reports, geo-referenced maps, and GIS digital data available from other sources. ATTENTION - The IMAGE_URL link is only useable by BC government staff. Public users can download the scanned maps by using the ECOCAT_URL link. There is no charge for the scanned map files. Please note that some maps and more recent mapping may also be available in digital GIS format. See - Ecosystem and Terrain Mapping Data Inventory.
Benthoscape Map of German Bank
The data layer (.shp) presented is the result of an unsupervised classification method for classifying seafloor habitat on German Bank (off South West Nova Scotia, Canada). This method involves separating environmental variables derived from multibeam bathymetry (Slope, Curvature) and backscatter (principal components: Q1, Q2, and Q3) into spatial units (i.e. pixels) and classifying the acoustically separated units into 5 habitat classes (Reef, Glacial Till, Silt, Silt with Bedforms, and Sand with Bedforms) using in situ data (imagery). Benthoscape classes (synonymous to landscape classifications in terrestrial ecology) describe the geomorphology and biology of the seafloor and are derived from elements of the seafloor that were acoustically distinguishable.Unsupervised classifications (acoustic classifications) optimized at 15 classes using Idrisi CLUSTER method (pixel based)Number representing the benthoscape classes (CLASS) derived from in situ imagery and video (See Brown et al., 2012, Figure 3, Table 1).Benthoscape classes (See Brown et al., 2012, Figure 3).Reference:Brown, C. Manitoba Geographical Names
This dataset provides a geographical location (in decimal degrees to the nearest second) for all officially named geographical features within the Province of Manitoba.The purpose of this dataset is to provide a geographical location (in decimal degrees to the nearest second) for all officially named geographical features within the Province of Manitoba, as per the Manitoba Geographical Names Program. The program’s mission is to: “embrace the active preservation of the province’s culture through its toponymy, and provides a naming authority for the enhancement, maintenance, dissemination, and protection of Manitoba’s geographical nomenclature recognizing the integral role geographical names play in our daily lives including their essential value to our scientific, commercial, and economic world.” As part of the program, staff administer and maintain all nomenclature records, an automated names information system, a resource library and archives, supplementary name location maps, a bibliography of name studies, and a commemorative names project. The Manitoba’s Geographical Names database contains more than 24, 000 official and heritage place names found throughout Manitoba. For each place name, the data set contains geographic coordinates, the type of feature, the name’s approval data, its location reference, plus any heritage information recorded about the name. Fields included (Alias (Field Name): Field description.) OBJECTID (OBJECTID): Sequential unique whole numbers that are automatically generated. Shape (Shape): Coordinates defining the features. Geographical Name (Geographical_Name): Current official name. Unique National Identifier (Field Unique_National_Identifier): Unique national identificatier applied to each toponym by the Geographical Names Board of Canada member for Manitoba. Feature Code (Feature_Code): Numeric code used to classify toponyms based on the nature of the related geographical feature. NTS 250,000 Map Sheet (NTS_250_000_Map_Sheet): Map number of the National Topographic System (NTS) 1:250 000 map sheet that contains the centroid of the toponym. NTS 50,000 Submap Sheet (NTS_50_000_Submap_Sheet): Map number of the National Topographic System (NTS) 1:50 000 map sheet that contains the centroid of the toponym. Latitude (Latitude): Latitude in Decimal Degrees. Longitude (Longitude): Longitude in Decimal Degrees. Casualty Hometown (Casualty_Hometown): Hometown that was provided by the casualty of war at time of enlistment. Casualty Regimental Number (Casualty_Regimental_Number): Regimental number of the casualty of war at the time of their death. Casualty Rank (Casualty_Rank): Rank of the casualty of war at the time of their death. Casualty Surname (Casualty_Surname): Surname of the casualty of war at the time of their death. Casualty Given Name(s) (Casualty_Given_Name_s_): Given name(s) of the casualty of war at the time of their death. Casualty Date of Death (Casualty_Date_of_Death): Date of death for the casualty of war. Casualty Regiment (Casualty_Regiment): Military affiliation of the casualty of war at the time of their death. Casualty Place of Burial (Casualty_Place_of_Burial): Place of burial of the casualty when the geographical feature is named in honour of a casualty of war. Feature Type (Feature_Type): Type of geographical feature, e.g. lake, island, bay, town, city. Feature Type Description (Feature_Type_Description): Description of the geographical feature.
Inuit Regions (Inuit Nunangat)
The Inuit Regions, also known as the Inuit Nunangat, dataset contains the geographical boundaries of the 4 Inuit Regions in Canada: Inuvialuit, Nunavut, Nunavik and Nunatsiavut. The boundaries, land only, have been drawn as per information defined in each land claim agreement. The marine boundaries of the 4 Inuit Regions will soon be available. The Inuit Regions (Inuit Nunangat) geographical boundaries are approximate and should be used for illustration purposes only.This dataset is Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) and Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) official source for Inuit regions on maps.
