Eelgrass (Zostera marina) study in the historical goldmining region of Goldboro, Nova Scotia (2020)
Nearshore marine construction activities often involve projects conducted directly in or adjacent to eelgrass beds and can have detrimental effects on eelgrass health, through physical destruction of beds, smothering of plants by sediment, and light reduction from turbidity. A liquefied natural gas (LNG) marine terminal is proposed to be constructed near Goldboro in Isaacs Harbour on the Eastern shore of Nova Scotia in an area where sediments are contaminated with heavy metals from historical goldmining tailings. We conducted a pre-impact assessment of the eelgrass beds in Isaacs Harbour and in adjacent contaminated and non-contaminated harbours. We used underwater video to precisely map the eelgrass bed in the direct construction footprint in Isaacs Harbour. We surveyed 169 stations along ~40 km of coastline from Wine Harbour to New Harbour to identify eelgrass presence or absence in the nearby region and provide data on the distribution and abundance of other sensitive fish habitat such as kelp and other macrophytes. Sediment samples were collected and analyzed for grain size, organic matter content and heavy metal contamination. We also collected eelgrass plants to assess plant condition using morphological and physiological metrics, and heavy metal contamination in plant tissues. The overall condition of eelgrass plants in the surveyed area fell within the range of healthy plant characteristics (morphometrics and carbohydrates reserves) seen elsewhere along the Atlantic coast. However, a few stations displayed high arsenic and mercury contamination in sediments, which translated in some cases to high contamination in eelgrass rhizomes and leaves. There would be significant risk of impact on benthic habitat and contamination of marine biota from resuspension of sediments during a construction and operation of a ship terminal in Isaacs Harbour. This pre-impact assessment will allow DFO to assess the LNG terminal construction proposal and develop appropriate mitigation and monitoring procedures. Collected data will also be used for habitat-forming species distribution modeling to inform marine spatial and conservation planning.Vercaemer, B., O’Brien, J. M., Guijarro-Sabaniel, J. and Wong, M. Medium Resolution Digital Elevation Model (MRDEM) - CanElevation Series
**ATTENTION! The files in this dataset are designed for streaming, not downloading. For the best experience, please follow the instructions available in the resources.**In replacement of the former Canadian Digital Elevation Model (CDEM) that is no longer supported, the Medium Resolution Digital Elevation Model (MRDEM) product is a multi-source product that integrates elevation data from the Copernicus DEM** acquired during the TanDEM-X Mission (AIRBUS, 2022), and the High Resolution Digital Elevation Model data derived from airborne lidar. This product provides a complete, 30 meters resolution, nationwide coverage for Canada. It includes a Digital Terrain Model (DTM), a Digital Surface Model (DSM) and other derived products. The spatial coverage extends into the USA, where needed, to provide coverage for cross-border watersheds in support of hydrological studies and applications. The MRDEM-30-DSM is partially based on the GLO-30 version of the Copernicus DEM** (hereafter named GLO-30). Since elevation values from the GLO-30 are referenced to the EGM2008 geoid model, they were transformed to the Canadian Height Reference System of 2013 (CGVD2013), using the CGG2013 geoid model. Where available, the MRDEM-30-DSM integrates surface data from the lidar-derived HRDEM mosaic, resampled from 1 m to 30 m. The process to generate the MRDEM-30-DTM is more complex. Where available, the HRDEM Mosaic derived from lidar was used since it already provides reliable terrain elevation values. The HRDEM Mosaic data used was resampled from 1m to 30m. Elsewhere, the processing workflow combines a forest removal model and a settlement removal model that is applied to the GLO-30 values in order to estimate the terrain elevation values. Both datasets are projected to Canada Atlas Lambert NAD83 (CSRS) (EPSG:3979).The MRDEM is referenced to the CGVD2013 which is the reference standard for orthometric heights across Canada. The product Medium Resolution Digital Elevation Model (MRDEM) is part of the CanElevation Series created in support to the National Elevation Data Strategy implemented by NRCan.** This product was in part produced using Copernicus WorldDEM-30 © DLR e.V. 2010-2014 and © Airbus Defence and Space GmbH 2014- 2018 provided under COPERNICUS by the European Union and ESA; all rights reserved. The organisations in charge of the Copernicus program by law or by delegation do not incur any liability for any use of the Copernicus WorldDEM-30.
Global Environmental eMuLator
The Global Environmental eMuLator (GEML) is a component of the experimental Global Deterministic Prediction System (GDPS) and is an artificial intelligence (AI)-based weather emulator trained on past atmospheric states. More specifically, this GEML model is based on data compatible with the ¼°, 13-level version of the GraphCast model (Lam et al. 2023) from DeepMind. It was trained and refined by ECCC, using ECMWF's ERA5 data (1979-2016) and operational analyses (2016-2021). The weights have been recalculated and are also available to the public. Forecasts are carried out twice daily, each with a 10-day lead time. It generates the reference large-scale temperature and horizontal wind fields, toward which GDPS's GEM forecasts are spectrally nudged. The geographical coverage is global with a horizontal resolution of 28 km. Data is available on 13 pressure levels, and employs a uniform latitude-longitude grid with 0.25-degree grid resolution. Six atmospheric variables defined on the 13 pressure levels, along with 4 surface variables are available every 6 hours.
Dominant Genus - Common Attribute Schema for Forest Resource Inventories
The Common Attribute Schema for Forest Resource Inventories (CASFRI) is a Canadian forest resource inventory data repository. Forest resource inventory datasets in CASFRI are harmonized to a common data model so that data collected by different agencies following different standards can be used together. Participating provincial, territorial and federal government departments and agencies share current and historical map-based forest resource inventory datasets through CASFRI so that their data are available to users who’s areas of interest span multiple jurisdictions. CASFRI was originally developed by academic researchers (Cumming et al., https://doi.org/10.1139/cjfr-2014-0102). This flavour of CASFRI (CASFRIv5) was developed anew in collaboration with academic researchers at the University of Laval to provide a government version of CASFRI that is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. It uses the most up-to-date forest inventory data provided by participating provincial, territorial, and federal government departments and agencies. CASFRIv5 is hosted on the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers’ data portal, the National Forest Information System (http://nfis.org).

Notice of Work (NoW) - Permitted Mine Areas - Regional Mine - Public
This polygonal dataset represents authorized applications for a Mines Act permit known as a Permitted Mine Area (PMA). This dataset can be used in combination with the NoW point dataset which represents both applications for a Mines Act permit and issued authorizations for mining activities proposed in the application. **The regional mine PMA dataset is not complete for all mine sites in BC. Review the data quality section for more information** Point representation of NoW: https://catalogue.data.gov.bc.ca/dataset/fab53209-63be-4c61-8de4-3e3fceec4227 Applications for regional Mines Act permits are known as Notice of Work (NoW) applications. Regional mine permits are issued for mineral and coal exploration activities, sand and gravel production, quarry production, and placer mining. Major mine permits are issued for producing mineral and coal mines. Permits are issued by the chief permitting officer under section 10 of the Mines Act and administered by the ministry. **Regional mines include:** * Exploration — mineral, coal, rock quarry, industrial mineral or dimension stone * Sand and gravel — aggregate, rock or natural substances used for construction purposes * Placer Most exploration and development activities require a permit under the Mines Act. A decision marks the end of the permitting process for a NoW application. The decision can either be to reject the application or to authorize the mining activities proposed in the NoW. * For new NoW authorizations, a Mines Act permit is issued * For an existing open Mines Act permit, the newly authorized mining activities are amended to the existing permit and the permit is re-issued Notice of Work categories include: Notice of Work application type, Notice of Work application status. **Notice of Work application type** Field: NOW_APPLICATION_TYPE_DESC (NW_APPTYPD) * Coal * Mineral * Placer Operations * Quarry – Construction Aggregate * Quarry – Industrial Mineral * Sand and Gravel **Notice of Work application status** Field: NOW_APPLICATION_STATUS_DESC (NW_APPSTAD) * Approved – mining activities in the NoW application have been authorized **For the public view, please be aware that the ministry:** * Removed the attribute value of closed permits in the PERMIT_STATUS_CODE_DESC (PMT_STD) field. These records will show as permit status is NULL (empty). * Only shows mine commodities of gold or jade/nephrite in the MINE_COMMODITY_DESC (MN_COMD) field. All other commodity values remain NULL (empty)
FRI: Gross merchantable volume - softwood
Gross merchantable volume - softwood (GMVSWD) is an expression of merchantable stem softwood volume (m3) on a per-hectare basis. Available here as a raster (GeoTIF) with a 20 m pixel resolution.Download: Here The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment, Forest Service Branch, has developed a forest resource inventory (FRI) which meets a variety of strategic and operational planning information needs for the boreal plains. Such needs include information on the general land cover, terrain, and growing stock (height, diameter, basal area, timber volume and stem density) within the provincial forest and adjacent forest fringe. This inventory provides spatially explicit information as 10 m or 20 m raster grids and as vectors polygons for relatively homogeneous forest stands or naturally non-forested areas with a 0.5 ha minimum area and a 2.0 ha median area. Gross merchantable volume per hectare - softwood (GMVSWD) is an expression of merchantable softwood stem volume (m3) on a per-hectare basis. Calculations are made assuming a cut-to-length scenario, and including all stem wood from a 30 cm stump height to an 8 cm top diameter (inside bark), with a minimum bole length of 5.1 m and a minimum log length of 2.4 m for softwood. GMVSWD is available here as a color-mapped 16-bit unsigned integer raster grid in GeoTIFF format with a 20 m pixel resolution. An ArcGIS Pro layer file (*.lyrx) is supplied for viewing GMVSWD data in the following 50 m3/ha categories. Domain: [NULL, 0…1000].
