DFO Gulf Region European Green Crab Monitoring Dataset
PURPOSE:Provide presence/absence and abundance data for the non-indigenous and invasive European green crab (EGC) in selected southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (sGSL) estuaries along the Northumberland Strait coast of New-Brunswick and eastern Prince-Edward-Island.DESCRIPTION:Temporal monitoring during ice-free seasons of European green crab abundance is completed in response to previous regional population declines in the Maritime provinces. Note that where presence is not indicated on the map does not mean absence - this survey is limited to a few sites.Traps that did not fish correctly were not included in the dataset. Examples of defective traps include: an open trap, an open bait container, a trap filled with algae and falling into the open position, a trap that has not been fished for over 48 hours, an overturned trap, or a trap that has been significantly moved or otherwise tampered with.Population estimates are not derived from this data. PARAMETERS COLLECTED:1) EGC count, size measurement, sex, and catch weight2) Counts of bycatch species. Categories reported in this dataset are finfish (cunner, striped bass, mummichog, winter flounder, smooth flounder, sculpin, tomcod, American eel, banded killifish, flounder, unknown bony fish), Atlantic rock crab, American lobster, and other (lion's mane jellyfish, moon jellyfish, other crabs, moon snail). Other smaller species were often in the trap but were not included as bycatch in this dataset as they can easily escape the mesh size and would not consistently be trapped. 3) Environmental data: water depth at trap setting, sediment type, vegetation types noted, salinity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen (not included), specific conductance (not included), conductivity (not included), weather, cloud cover (not included), tide state and direction (upon fishing).NOTES ON QUALITY CONTROL:Data entry of morphological parameters randomly verified for accuracy.Weights are not reported for PEI sites due to inconsistencies with types of weighing scales and measurement protocols.PHYSICAL SAMPLE DETAILS:Whole European green crab specimensSAMPLING METHODS:Baited trapping with Fukui traps. Coastwide distribution of Dungeness crab
This dataset contains two geotiff layers. The first layer (1) represents the coastwide distribution of Dungeness crab as predicted from a geostatistical model. The model predicts the mean coastwide probability of Dungeness crab detection using trap sampling gear. The second layer (2) represent the uncertainty in those predictions. Detailed descriptions of these data products can be found in Nephin et al. (2023) and the code used to produce them can be found at https://gitlab.com/dfo-msea/dungeness-sdm/.The objectives of this work was to model the habitat of Dungeness crab (_Metacarcinus magister_), a data-limited coastal marine species, to evaluate the efficacy of data integration when making predictions to geographic areas larger than the area covered by any one data source. In British Columbia, Dungeness crab are sampled regionally and sporadically with a variety of sampling gears and survey protocols, making them an ideal case study to investigate whether the integration of disparate surveys can improve habitat predictions. To that aim, we assemble data from dive, trawl, and baited-trap surveys to generate six candidate generalized linear mixed-effect models with spatial random fields. This dataset contains the mean (1) and difference (2) between the Survey-effect and Gear-effect model predictions.
Biodiversity of the snow crab trawl survey on the Lower North Shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence (2018)
A research survey on snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) was conducted from July 1 to July 17, 2018 on the Lower North Shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence between Havre-Saint-Pierre and Blanc-Sablon. The main objective of this survey was to assess the abundance of snow crab and benthic species associated with snow crab habitat. Only data for benthic species associated with snow crab habitat are presented in this dataset.Data were collected according to a fixed station sampling design consisting of 61 stations, between 46 and 230 meters depth. Specimens were collected using a beam trawl with a total width of 2.8 meters and a total height of 0.76 meters. The codend was lined with a 16 millimeter stretched mesh net in order to harvest the small individuals. The hauls were made at a target speed of 2 knots and a target duration of 10 minutes depending on seabed conditions. Start and end positions were recorded to calculate the distance traveled on each tow using the geosphere library in R. The average tow distance was approximately 25 m. The area covered at each tow was the product of the trawl opening and the distance traveled.The two files provided (DarwinCore format) are complementary and are linked by the "eventID" key. The "Activity_Information" file includes generic activity information, including date and location. The "occurrence_taxon" file includes the taxonomy of the species observed, identified to the species or lowest possible taxonomic level. To obtain the abundance and biomass assessment, contact Cedric Juillet (cedric.juillet@dfo-mpo.gc.ca).For quality controls, all taxonomic names were checked against the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) to match recognized standards. The WoRMS match was placed in the "ScientificIDname" field of the occurrence file. Special cases were noted in the "commentsIdentification" field and selected specimens were confirmed with field photos. Data quality checks were performed using the R obistools and Worms libraries. All sampling locations were spatially validated.
Biodiversity of the snow crab trawl survey in Ste-Marguerite Bay, in the Gulf of St-Lawrence (2006-2009)
A research survey on snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) was conducted from May 2006 to May 2009 in the Bay of Ste. Marguerite near Sept-Îles, Quebec. The main objective of this survey was to assess the abundance of snow crab and benthic species associated with snow crab habitat. Only data for benthic species associated with snow crab habitat are presented in this dataset.Data were collected according to a fixed station sampling design consisting of 79 stations, between 7 to 198 meters depth. Specimens were collected using a beam trawl. The codend was lined with a small stretched mesh net in order to harvest the small individuals. The hauls were made at a target duration of 15 minutes. Start and end positions were recorded to calculate the distance traveled on each tow using the geosphere library in R. The two files provided (DarwinCore format) are complementary and are linked by the "eventID" key. The "Activity_Information" file includes generic activity information, including date and location. The "occurrence_taxon" file includes the taxonomy of the species observed, identified to the species or lowest possible taxonomic level. Aquatic Invasive Species European Green Crab (Carcinus maenas) Monitoring, British Columbia
Aquatic invasive species pose economic and ecological threats to Canada's coastal waters. In response, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has established monitoring programs to detect and track the spread of aquatic invasive species, including European Green Crab, in Canadian waters. Fukui traps have been deployed annually at both new and long-term monitoring locations throughout coastal British Columbia.

The main objective of this survey was to assess the abundance of snow crab and benthic species associated with snow crab habitat. Only data for benthic species associated with snow crab habitat are presented in this dataset.Data were collected according to a fixed station sampling design consisting of 66 stations, between 31 and 279 meters depth. Specimens were collected using a beam trawl with a total width of 2.8 meters and a total height of 0.76 meters. The codend was lined with a 16 millimeter stretched mesh net in order to harvest the small individuals. The hauls were made at a target speed of 2 knots and a target duration of 15 minutes. Start and end positions were recorded to calculate the distance traveled on each tow using the geosphere library in R. The average tow distance was approximately 25 m. Snow Crab Collaborative Post-season Trap Survey
This project was completed by the Shellfish Section in the Newfoundland and Labrador Science Branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), in collaboration with industry partners. The Coastal Environmental Baseline program supported the Placentia Bay portion of project work for an ongoing industry-DFO collaborative post-season trap survey for Snow Crab that was initiated in 2003 and has occurred each year. This survey is conducted by Snow Crab harvesters accompanied by at-sea observers and takes place in NAFO Divisions 2J3KLNOP4R. Historically the survey focused on commercial fishing grounds but began transitioning to a partly random stratified design in 2017. Since 2018, approximately 50% of survey stations are randomly allocated while 50% remain fixed. At each station, six (for inshore stations) or ten (for offshore stations) commercial traps are set in a fleet. To gather data on non-commercial sized Snow Crab, including females, many fleets also include one small-mesh trap. The coverage of small-mesh traps has been expanding in recent years with the aim of one small-mesh trap for every station in the coming years. Biological sampling is undertaken on at least one commercial trap and the small-mesh trap at each station. The data from this survey is incorporated into the annual stock assessment for Snow Crab in the Newfoundland and Labrador region. DFO Newfoundland and Labrador Region Multispecies Trawl Survey - Snow Crab 2018-2025
This data is from the Newfoundland and Labrador Region Multispecies Trawl survey, specific to Snow Crab from 2018-25, with only successful tows included in the database. Details of annual survey coverage and an overview of the survey program can be found in Rideout et al. (2025) and references therein. This trawl survey follows a depth-stratified random design, designated by type = 1 (Survey). From 2021-23, a comparative fishing program (i.e., direct side-by-side paired comparison between old and new vessels) was undertaken to determine differences in catchability due to vessel changes and associated modifications to the trawl gear with the retirement of the CCGS Alfred Needler and CCGS Teleost (called ‘old vessels’) and the introduction of the CCGS Capt. Jacques Cartier and CCGS John Cabot (called ‘new vessels’). During this period other set types are in the dataset (6 and 7) from paired tows and all station allocation may not have been stratified random. The DFO NL Region comparative fishing success varied by year, NAFO division, and vessel combinations and resulted in conversion factors to adjust the catches of Snow Crab in the old vessels time series into the same units as the new vessels. Methodologies and conversion factors are described in Wheeland et al. (2024), Trueman et al. (2025), Trueman et al. (2026), and Pantin et al. (in prep). Conversion factors have been applied to the numbers of Snow Crab caught, where conversion factors exist, and are in the converted_number column. An NA in the converted_number column indicates that conversion factors do not exist for this vessel/area combination and therefore direct comparisons cannot be made between old vessels and new vessels. Weights are those recorded at sea and do not have conversion factors applied. Analyses by the DFO NL Snow Crab group apply a length-weight relationship to the converted numbers to determine converted weights, which is not in this dataset. All reasonable attempts are made to standardize fishing time during trawl surveys, however there is always some variation in the actual time on bottom. The species weights and numbers in this dataset are not standardized for tow distance/duration. Spatial coverage of this survey has varied over time, therefore, not all divisions, or depths within divisions, are sampled every year or season. Scientific surveys on the snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) in the estuary and northern Gulf of St. Lawrence
Since 1992, scientific surveys have been conducted annually alternately, in the estuary and the North of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. These surveys allow DFO to monitor the population and ecosystem of the snow crab and thus understand the state of the stock and the renewal of the species.Beam trawl hauls following a systematic sampling take place every 2 years in the estuary and in the Lower North Shore. In the estuary (zone 17), a sampling of 94 stations is carried out. In the Lower North Shore (zone 13 and 14), 60 regular stations are usually sampled and 35 exploratory stations are distributed between Baie Johan Bettz and Kegaska (zone 15 and 16) but also on the south shore of zone 13 near Newfoundland. At each station, a fishing haul of 5 to 10 minutes is carried out. The harvested crabs are measured (cephalothorax width), sexed and counted. The state of the shell, sexual maturity and egg development stages are also assessed. The number of crabs caught, classified according to different size categories, allows estimating densities and thus monitoring the state and renewal of the snow crab population in the different fishing areas. This dataset on the snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) contains abundance and density data of crabs under different size classes as well as geographical and bathymetric variables by station. The dataset covers the period from 1992 to the present and is updated each year. Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence Snow Crab Research Trawl Survey Data
PURPOSE:Trawl survey data used primarily for assessing the status of snow crab stocks in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.DESCRIPTION:Tow, catch, and biological information for snow crab and other species caught during the annual snow crab research vessel trawl survey in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. Currently, the survey uses a stratified random design that divides the area into 355 square grids, each measuring 12.7 km by 12.7 km. The survey area spans the majority of snow crab habitat in the southern Gulf, at depths ranging from 20 to 200 fathoms. Sampling stations are trawled during civil twilight hours using a Bigouden Nephrops bottom trawl net. The vessel operates at a target speed of 2 knots for a duration of 5 minutes, maintaining a warp-to-depth ratio of 3:1, with a maximum warp length of 575 fathoms.PARAMETERS COLLECTED:Snow crab: sex, carapace width, height of male crab claw, shell condition, gonad colour, egg colour, eggs remaining, and missing legs.Other species: counts, and weightsOther: GPS coordinates; swept area; depth; temperature; CTD profile;NOTES ON QUALITY CONTROL:Data are checked for irregularities and errors.SAMPLING METHODS:Survey catches are sorted by species or taxonomic groups and measured directly on board.
