This data represents spatially defined areas of old growth forest that are identified during landscape unit planning or an operational planning process. Forest licensees are not required to follow direction provided by non-legal OGMAs when preparing FSPs, and may choose to manage required old growth biodiversity targets in other ways. OGMAs, in combination with other areas where forestry development is prevented or constrained, are used to achieve biodiversity targets. This layer contains current Landscape Reserve Design (LRD) polygons associated the Great Bear Rainforest. The spatial data layer excludes sensitive information and is publicly viewable and downloadable. This data represents legally established and spatially defined LRD areas and are designed to meet Great Bear Rainforest requirements for Old Forest representation, Indigenous features and resources, wildlife values, and rare and endangered ecosystems that are identified during landscape unit planning or operational planning processes. Forest licensees are required to implement Ecosystem Based Management during operational planning processes to concurrently maintain ecosystem integrity and improve human well-being. This spatial view displays the current legal polygons, with more to be added as LRDs are established. Area Based Management Plans (ABMP) are designated areas for the purposes of environmental protection. It must consider the impact of point and non-point source of waste, cumulative impact of the wastes, environmental management objectives and outcomes for the designated area, and ongoing monitoring and reporting.

The dataset contains approved legal boundaries for fisheries sensitive watersheds. A FSW is a mapped area with specific management objectives intended to guide development activities which may adversely impact important fish values

The Provincial Bison Protection Areas dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent Bison Protection Areas in Alberta. In order to support the conservation, management and recovery of disease-free bison in northern Alberta, wood bison located within specified Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) are listed as Threatened under the Wildlife Act and Regulation. All hunting of wood bison within Northwest Bison Protection Area is regulated and based on issuance of a bison special licence and allocation processes for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons. All hunting (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) of wood bison within the Wabasca Bison Protection Area is prohibited. Legal descriptions of the boundaries of Provincial Bison Protection Areas can be found within Schedule 11 of the Wildlife Regulation. The boundaries within the Provincial Bison Protection Areas dataset have been interpreted from written legal descriptions within Schedule 11 of the Wildlife Regulation. In case of discrepancy between GIS data and the written legal description, the written legal description shall take precedence.

Landscape Units are spatially identified areas of land and/or water used for long-term planning of resource management activities. Landscape units are important for designing strategies and objectives to maintain landscape level biodiversity and for managing other forest resources. Landscape units are also used to initiate landscape unit plans, which provide direction on biodiversity, old growth forest retention, wildlife habitat maintenance and timber harvesting. LUs may also be used as planning zones for other stakeholders in addition to forest licensees and MOFR. This spatial view was created based on the selection from the layer LANDSCAPE UNIT SP, where the DATE OF RETIREMENT is null. Therefore, only current LU shapes are included in this layer
