Cold Lake Sub-Regional Plan Spatial Data
Sub-regional plans support working landscapes that provide economic opportunities and maintain healthy landscapes by outlining management approaches and requirements for development and human footprint restoration. These plans enable public lands to support the interests of all Albertans, including Indigenous peoples, for the present and into the future. The Cold Lake Sub-Regional Plan Spatial Data dataset contains spatial data that can be used for planning as described within the Cold Lake Sub-regional Plan (2022). The following datasets are available: Recreational Management Areas, Access Management Plan Centerlines, and Riparian Setbacks. Please see the metadata on the individual datasets for details.
Caribou Sub-Regional Plan Boundaries
Sub-regional plans are Alberta's approach to supporting caribou recovery through careful land-use planning which recognizes and maintains working landscapes supporting a variety of social, economic and traditional land-use. The Caribou Sub-Regional Plan Boundaries dataset contains boundaries delineating the extent of sub-regional planning areas across northern Alberta. Sub-regional planning areas include those for the approved Bistcho Lake and Cold Lake sub-regional plans, as well as the following upcoming planning areas: Upper Smoky, Wandering River, Berland, Chinchaga, Slave Lake, Wabasca, Richardson, Red Earth, and Caribou Mountains. Integrated Resource Plan - Subregional
The Integrated Resource Plan - Subregional dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent the Sub-Regional Integrated Resource Plans (IRP) in Alberta. All the Sub-Regional IRPs were completed under the Integrated Resource Planning Program, from 1976 to approximately 1995. These plans were endorsed by the Government of Alberta with most being approved by Cabinet. The Sub-Regional Plans describe land-use zonation and objectives within individual defined planning areas, to ensure overall consistency with Regional goals and objectives. An Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) is a plan which identifies the values and associated land and resource management goals for the planning area in consideration of the maintenance of social, economic, and ecological values. An IRP provides direction regarding the type of land and resource management activity that would facilitate meeting the stated objectives in the planning area (for example: recreation, grazing, industrial and commercial activities). The public was often involved in contributing input to the development of an IRP. Majority of IRP plans were endorsed by the Government of Alberta in various periods.
Cold Lake, Alberta - Bathymetry (GIS data, line features)
All available bathymetry and related information for Cold Lake were collected and hard copy maps digitized where necessary. The data were validated against more recent data (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission 'SRTM' imagery and Indian Remote Sensing 'IRS' imagery) and corrected where necessary. The published data set contains the lake bathymetry formatted as an Arc ascii grid. Bathymetric contours and the boundary polygon are available as shapefiles.
Static-Water-Level Elevation Contours in the Grand Centre, Sand River, Ethel Lake and Muriel Lake Formations, and Empress Formation Unit 1 and 3 in the Cold Lake-Beaver River Drainage Basin (GIS data, line feature)
Alberta Geological Survey partnered with Alberta Environment (AENV) Northern Region to compile and analyze groundwater data in the Cold Lake-Beaver River Drainage Basin. This compilation and analysis assisted AENV and its stakeholders to complete an update of the Beaver River-Cold Lake Water Management Plan. This digital file provides the contours of the hydraulic-head distributions for the Grand Centre, Sand River, Ethel Lake and the Muriel Lake formations, and the Empress Formation Units 1 and 3 based on reported static-water levels from water wells within the study area.
Cold Lake, Alberta - Boundary (GIS data, polygon features)

Preglacial and Glacial Formation Extents in the Cold Lake-Beaver River Drainage Basin (GIS data, polygon features)
Alberta Geological Survey partnered with Alberta Environment (AENV) Northern Region to compile and analyze groundwater data in the Cold Lake-Beaver River Drainage Basin. The compilation and analysis assisted AENV and its stakeholders to update the Beaver River-Cold Lake Water Management Plan. The project completed a digital, three-dimensional geological model of the area. This digital release contains the outlines of formation boundaries used in that report, specifically the boundaries for preglacial and glacial formations.
Land-use/Land-cover Classifications of the Cold Lake Oil Sands Area Derived from 2009 Landsat Imagery (Image data, Tiff format)
The Cold Lake oil sands area, Township 56 to 69, Range 1 to 11, west of the 4th Meridian, falls within the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan (LARP). As part of Alberta's Land-use Framework, LARP was developed in 2012 to set the stage for robust growth, vibrant communities and a healthy environment within the region. One of its implementation objectives is to balance the economic development of oil sands and impacts on ecosystem and environment. This is to be achieved through enhanced science-based monitoring for improved characterization of the environment and collection of the information necessary to understand cumulative effects. This land classification raster dataset is derived from 2009 Landsat imagery. It contains 13 classes: 0 - unclassified, 1 - exposed land/cut blocks/harvested areas, 2 - water bodies, 3 - transitional bare surfaces, 5 - mixed developed areas, 6 - developed areas, 7- shoal, 8 - shrub land, 9 - grassland, 10 - agriculture areas, 11 - coniferous forest, 12 - broad leaf forest, 13 - mixed forest, and 14- fire scar.
