Monitoring the quality of river and river water
The theme on physicochemical monitoring of rivers and rivers presents data from all stations in networks monitoring water quality in rivers in Quebec and the St. Lawrence River.The purpose of networks for monitoring general water quality is to characterize, using current physicochemical and bacteriological parameters, the quality of water in spatial terms and to monitor the evolution of this quality over time. For the regular monitoring of the general quality of river and river water, the parameters measured are: total phosphorus, total nitrogen, nitrites and nitrates, ammonia nitrogen, chlorophyll a, pheopigments, faecal coliforms, faecal coliforms, turbidity, suspended matter, pH, conductivity, dissolved organic carbon and temperature. This data is used to calculate the Bacteriological and Physicochemical Water Quality Index (IQBP), a water quality classification index.The data set on physicochemical monitoring of rivers and rivers also includes the drainage areas of some of the stations. The attribute table provides a compilation of land use by category for the last year available at the time the data was generated. Investigating residency and survival during the early phase of the Atlantic salmon smolt marine migration in northwest Placentia Bay
This project was completed by the Salmonids Section in the Newfoundland and Labrador Science Branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). The Coastal Environmental Baseline Program has supported efforts in 2018 and 2019 of tagged Atlantic salmon smolts leaving the Bay de L’eau River and Rushoon River region of Placentia Bay. This was part of a larger four year tracking study in this region (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022) trying to improve DFO’s understanding of the residency, survival, and migration routes of Atlantic salmon smolts during the first months at sea within northwest Placentia Bay. As of spring 2023, four years of detection data were being processed with the goal of presenting this work at the next Atlantic salmon CSAS meeting and developing a primary publication. This record contains the locations there smolt were tagged in Placentia Bay, NL.
Water samples
Water sampling data includes several thematic layers. 1) Water samples authorized by the MELCCFP: This thematic layer shows the location of water sampling sites authorized in Quebec under section 22 of the Environment Quality Act (chapter Q-2) and their associated volume (liter per day). Median surface water hardnesses
This thematic layer represents the characterization of the hardness of surface water in Quebec. The hardness is presented according to the medians calculated from the concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions in seven classes. Water hardness influences the toxicity of certain metals, including barium, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, copper, manganese, nickel, nickel, lead, and zinc. Surface water quality criteria are determined according to the hardness of the receiving watercourse. These criteria are used to make judgments about surface water quality and are the basis for groundwater criteria used to assess the quality of groundwater that recurs as surface water. Finally, they are the key element in calculating environmental discharge objectives (EORs) used to assess the quality of wastewater discharges to the aquatic environment. Know concentration areas of the Softshell clam in the intertidal zone of the Estuary and the Gulf of St. Lawrence
The dataset represents known concentration areas of harvested or unharvested Softshell clam (Mya arenaria) in the intertidal zone of the Estuary and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Quebec region. The dataset was created for the National environmental emergencies centre (NEEC) for preparation and response in case of an oil spill. Concentration areas were defined using Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) inventories conducted between 2000 and 2020.This layer is dependent on the inventories carried out and thus only represents known clam areas. For example, for the Haute-Côte-Nord, inventories have been limited to areas open to harvesting (with the exception of 4 sectors), but it is known that the Softshell clam is also present outside these areas. In addition, little information was available for the Moyenne and Basse-Côte-Nord.This data layer does not represent the general distribution of the species nor the extent to which fishing is allowed. The extent of shellfish beds may vary over time in response to, among others harvesting and the recruitment rates. The boundaries of polygons from inventory data may be underestimated relative to the actual size of the deposit since the inventories were conducted at the location where the resource is most abundant, without necessarily sampling the entire bed. However, the accuracy is sufficient for the protection and management needs of the resource in the event of an environmental incident. Data sources and references:Brulotte, S. 2011.
