Shelters
The intention is to show the boundaries of all refuges in Manitoba, as designated by the Designation of Wildlife Lands Regulation (171/2001) under The Wildlife Act (C.C.S.M. c. W130). Refuge types include Wildlife Refuge, Game Bird Refuge, Goose Refuge, and Fur Bearing Animal Refuge. The Use of Wildlife Lands Regulation (77/99) determines what activities are prohibited within each refuge.Boundaries are drawn based on the physical description described in regulation, or imported using CAD files from the official Director of Surveys Plan stated in regulation.
Polygons of inland water bodies of the Magdalen Islands Lagoons Marine Refuge
This cartographic dataset represents a geomorphological update of the boundaries of the five inland water bodies that form the Magdalen Islands Marine Refuge. It was produced by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) as part of its marine refuge characterization work.The data used comes from the August 15, 2022 version of the Quebec maritime Geospatial Database of Coastal Ecosystems (GDB), developed from various sources including satellite and airborne images from 2019 (Jobin et al. 2021; Provencher-Nolet et al. 2024). The boundaries of the inland water bodies were defined according to the upper high tide line, which represents the maximum extent of the water during the highest tides.The final product is a polygonal shapefile representing the five inland water bodies of the marine refuge as well as the terrestrial areas of the archipelago. The data are projected in NAD83 / MTM zone 4.For more information on the method used to generate this layer from the GDB, see Grégoire et al. (2026). The method used to create the source geospatial data is described in Jobin et al. (2021) and Provencher-Nolet et al. (2024).

White Road Refuge
Punctual location of the refuges on the Route Blanche.The Route Blanche is a snowmobile trail located on the Lower North Shore, constituting the only winter land link between Kegaska and Blanc-Sablon, thus bridging the road link between municipalities. Note: The White Road shelters are already part of the “Establishment” dataset https://www.donneesquebec.ca/recherche/dataset/etablissement-du-mtq (see “Refuge” in the “typetablis” attribute column). Wildlife Refuges in Saskatchewan.The Saskatchewan Wildlife Refuges are described in Part V of the Wildlife Management Zones and Special Areas Boundaries Regulation (WMZSABR). They are constituted as areas for protecting, propagating, managing, controlling, regulating or enhancing wildlife or its habitat.

The Wildlife Refuge feature class provides the geographical boundaries (polygons) of New Brunswick's Wildlife Refuges and Wildlife Management Areas. Most of these entities were established in the mid 1900s for the management of wildlife species that were hunted, trapped or snared by providing areas where hunting, trapping or snaring could be prohibited or restricted. Some areas were included because they were recognized tourist destinations (Acadian Village and Kings Landing Wildlife Management Areas) or other areas designated for "protection". As of early 2008, hunting, trapping and snaring is not allowed in any Wildlife Refuge and some Wildlife Management Areas; while in some Wildlife Management Areas trapping and snaring are allowed but no hunting; and in other Wildlife Management Areas hunting, trapping and snaring are allowed; ie, no restrictions.Most of New Brunswick's Wildlife Refuges and Wildlife Management Areas were established in the mid-1900s for the management of wildlife species that were hunted, trapped or snared by providing areas where those activities could be prohibited or restricted. Biological refuge (designated and planned)
Biological refuges are small forest areas located on the domain of the State and permanently removed from forest management activities in order to maintain the biological diversity associated with old forests. Their management is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests (MRNF). Forest management activities are prohibited on the territory of a biological refuge, with few exceptions. There are currently 3,704 biological refuges in Quebec, distributed relatively uniformly throughout managed forests in the domain of the State. Biological refuges can be designated under the Sustainable Forest Development Act (LADTF, chapter A-18.1) or in draft before legal designation. Legally designated organic refuges make up the vast majority. They are exempt from industrial activities, which allows them to be registered in the Quebec Register of Protected Areas (RAP) maintained by the Ministry of the Environment and the Fight against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks (MELCCFP).This data comes from the MRNF STF system, which is the __official source__ of this geographic information.**This third party metadata element was translated using an automated translation tool (Amazon Translate).**
A Soft-Shelled Clam (Mya arenaria) Habitat Suitability Model For The DFO Maritimes Region
The data in this layer represents habitat suitability of soft-shelled clams (Mya arenaria) in the DFO Maritimes region, and was developed using an interdepartmental approach. Substrate classification data as well as bathymetric data for the Region were used to identify potential habitat for soft-shelled clams. Substrates identified as suitable included: sand, mud, sand and mud (Greenlaw, 2022). Contours (0m and 70m) from GEBCO bathymetric data were used to isolate depths between which soft-shelled clams are present. At this stage, a polygon reflecting soft substrates from 0-70m was created as "Suitable". A "Not Suitable" layer was similarly created using the substrates: boulders, continuous bedrock, discontinuous bedrock, gravel, mixed sediment, sand and gravel.To digitally validate the model, the Regional shoreline was divided into subsectors (developed by Environment and Climate Change Canada for the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program). Data from DFO (clam harvesting intensity) as well as Conservation and Protection (clam harvesting infraction locations) were used to established species presence within each sub-sector. If there had been any harvesting activity, legal or illegal, in an individual subsector, it was considered "Suitable and Validated". Merged into one final product, the model includes areas that are "Not Suitable", "Suitable", as well as "Suitable and Validated" for soft-shelled clam habitat.Cite this data as: Harvey, C., Vincent, M., Greyson, P., Hamer, A. Bathymetry of the Magdalen Islands Lagoons Marine Refuge
This bathymetric dataset of the five inland water bodies of the Magdalen Islands was produced by the Quebec Regional Science Directorate (DRS) of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) as part of the characterization of the Magdalen Islands lagoon marine refuge.The data comes from several sources, including a bathymetric LiDAR survey, satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB), acoustic surveys, and spot depth sampling conducted in inland water bodies.The final product is a 5 m resolution raster projected in NAD83 / MTM zone 4. Depths are expressed in meters and reduced to chart datum (CD). This dataset is provided for information, analysis, and research purposes and is not intended for navigation.This dataset is a derived scientific product generated through processing, interpolation, and integration conducted by a DRS research team, and it does not constitute a hydrographic product of the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS). The data may contain uncertainties, acquisition artifacts, or processing errors, and do not meet the hydrographic standards of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).This dataset is provided exclusively for informational, analytical, management, and scientific research purposes.
