Soil Survey Project Boundaries
Soil Survey (SL) Project Boundaries (STE_SOIL_PROJ_BOUNDARIES_SVW) contain boundaries (study areas) and attributes describing each SL project (project level metadata), and includes links to the locations of other data associated with the project (e.g., soil survey reports, polygon datasets, plotfiles, scanned maps, legends). This layer is derived from the [STE_TEI_PROJECT_BOUNDARIES_SP](https://catalogue.data.gov.bc.ca/dataset/1313fac7-2ea1-4c6b-995b-bd421b7ec3c6) layer by filtering on the PROJECT_TYPE attribute. Project types include: SOIL, TIMSOI, and SOILSW. SL Project Boundaries should be used in conjunction with [Soil Name and Layer Files](https://catalogue.data.gov.bc.ca/dataset/soil-name-and-layer-files) and [Soil Survey Polygons](https://catalogue.data.gov.bc.ca/dataset/soil-survey-spatial-view) which divide the landscape into units according to soil association, name, type, drainage, parent material, and texture. Soil datasets and resources can also be accessed through the [Soil Mapping Data Packages](http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/esd/distdata/ecosystems/Soil_Data/Soil_Data_Pkgs/) or the interactive mapping application [Soil Information Finder Tool](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/environment/air-land-water/land/soil/soil-information-finder). **Current version**: v12 (2026-06-22)
Groundwater Recharge Rate, Groundwater Geoscience Program
In the hydrogeological unit, quantity of water that replenishes groundwater beneath the water table, expressed in mm/yr. Recharge is usually calculated using hydrology balance, integrating information from precipitation, hydrology data, drainage, soil properties, evapotranspiration, etc. The result is a raster dataset in which each cell has a given value for the recharge of the aquifer. It can be calculate using HELP software, developed by the US EPA. The methods used to create the dataset are described in the metadata associated with the dataset. The dataset represent a raster in which each cell has a mean value describing the global annual recharge of the hydrogeological unit.
Soil survey
Get consolidated soil data mapped on a county basis in a digitally stitched and standardized product. This soil survey data was mapped by a number of soil surveyors from the 1920s to the 1990s. The product incorporates soil information from a variety of map scales. The project has brought the individual county or regional municipality surveys together to reveal inconsistencies in soil data across county boundaries. The soil complex database contains other descriptive information including: * slope class * Canada Land Inventory (CLI) ranking * stoniness * drainage class * texture
Thematic Soil Maps of Manitoba
The “Thematic Soil Maps of Manitoba” is a revised and condensed version of the Manitoba Detailed Soils Database produced by CANSIS. It contains data relating to the soils slope, drainage, agricultural capability, erosion potential, and surface texture.
Thematic Soil Maps of Saskatchewan
The “Thematic Soil Maps of Saskatchewan” is a revised and condensed version of the Saskatchewan Detailed Soils Database produced by CANSIS. It contains data relating to the soils slope, drainage, agricultural capability, erosion potential, and surface texture.
Soil Erosion Risk
This map displays an assessment of soil erosion risk for the agricultural area of Alberta. Loss of protective residue cover through cultivation will increase the potential risk of soil erosion. The vulnerability of the soil to erosion combined with the intensity of cultivation determines the degree to which the soil may be at risk. The classes shown on the map were ranked from 0 (lowest risk) to 1 (highest risk). This resource was created in 2002 using ArcGIS.
Percent Saturated Surface Soil Moisture
This data series represents the volumetric soil moisture (percent saturated soil) for the surface layer (<5 cm). The data is created daily and is averaged for the ISO standard week and month. The data is produced from passive microwave satellite data collected by the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite and converted to soil moisture using version 6.20 of the SMOS soil moisture processor. The data are produced by the European Space Agency and obtained under a Category 1 proposal for Level 2 soil moisture data. The data are gridded to a resolution of 0.25 degrees. Data quality flags have been applied to remove areas where rainfall is present during the acquisition, where snow cover is detected and when Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) is above an acceptable threshold.
Constructed drains
This data keeps the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness' records of modified or newly constructed drainage systems current. Constructed drains include ditches, buried tile systems, or natural watercourses that have been modified to improve drainage.
Digital Soil Mapping
## Purpose The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA) is responsible for Ontario’s provincial soil maps and maintains and update them as necessary. Digital Soil Mapping (DSM) is a modern methodology using spatially explicit soils and environmental data to predict soil variation throughout a landscape at a high, consistent resolution. Digital soil maps are being rolled out throughout Ontario’s agricultural land base to update provincial soil maps. ## Reach Provincial soil maps are used in many decision-making processes including: * land use planning * land evaluation * farming practices * best management practices * ecological monitoring * land resource mapping Potential users of this data include: * farmers * certified crop advisors * conservation authorities * academic researchers * land use planners ## Potential impacts Digital soil maps provide more accurate and precise soils data and enables improved management of soil resources across multiple stakeholders. This allows for better decision making to maximize land use efficiency, improve economic efficiency of soil resources and promote soil health and soil conservation. ## Technical description Digital soil mapping combines geo-referenced soil observations with geo-referenced environmental layers to mathematically model soil variation as a function of environment variation. These models are based on well established, but often complex relationships, between soil properties and topography, biology, geology and hydrology.
Water Erosion Risk
This map displays the risk of soil degradation by water in the agricultural region of Alberta. Water erosion is a concern because it reduces soil quality by removing soil particles and nutrients, and reduces water quality if these particles are carried into nearby water bodies. The map uses five classes to describe the water erosion risk on bare, unprotected mineral soil: negligible, low, moderate, high and severe. This resource was created using ArcGIS, originally published as a print map in 1993 .
