Special Management Areas are part of a network of protected lands in Saskatchewan. The following dataset accurately defines SMA land areas in Saskatchewan that have various levels of developmental restrictions.The Minister of Environment wishes to identify “Special Management Areas” to be managed for the following purposes:a) the protection, enhancement or restoration of natural ecosystems, wildlife habitat or habitat of rare, threatened or endangered plant or animal species;b) the retention of significant botanical, zoological, morphological, historical archaeological features respecting the land;c) the conservation of soil, air and water quality; and the opportunity for scientific research and study related to the ecological health of the area.

This dataset contains boundaries of Management Areas, which are geographic areas of managerial responsibility within Parks Operations Division, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas. Management Areas are groupings of Districts, which are geographic areas of operational responsibility within Parks Operations Division. Parks Operations Division Districts nest within Management Areas, which in turn nest within Regions. These boundaries are administrative/operational in nature, and are subject to change.

Wildlife Refuges in Saskatchewan.The Saskatchewan Wildlife Refuges are described in Part V of the Wildlife Management Zones and Special Areas Boundaries Regulation (WMZSABR). They are constituted as areas for protecting, propagating, managing, controlling, regulating or enhancing wildlife or its habitat.

Game Preserve's in Saskatchewan.The Saskatchewan Game Preserves are described in Part III of the Wildlife Management Zones and Special Areas Boundaries Regulations (WMZSABR). They are constituted as areas for protecting, propagating, managing, controlling, regulating or enhancing wildlife or its habitat.

The Special Area dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent Special Areas in Alberta. Special Area is a rural municipality type defined under the authority of the Municipal Government Act. Special Areas were established under the Special Areas Act in 1938 due to extreme hardship of the drought years of the 1930s. The Special Areas Act of 1938 has more or less remained intact although there were some amendments in 1966 and 1985. Special Area refers to a rural area in southeast Alberta.

This dataset contains district boundaries representing geographic areas of operational responsibility within Parks Operations Division, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas. ORV management areas are designate areas where off-road vehicle use is managed for the protection of ecological balance or physical characteristics within the area, including on mineral claims and in territorial parks. Off-road vehicle management areas can result from recommendations coming out of public planning processes, such as regional land-use planning, local area planning and special management areas such as Habitat Protection areas or parks. Game Management Areas (GMAs) are legal boundaries that define an area within which big game management objectives can be met through the setting of area-specific regulations. In other words, GMAs are used to manage Yukon wildlife species. GMAs are a combination of Game Management Zone (GMZ or Zone) and Game Management Subzone (GMS or Subzone). There are 443 GMAs in the Yukon which are grouped together into 11 Zones. In general, Zone boundaries follow highway centre lines and Subzone boundaries follow creeks and rivers. In effect, GMAs delineate mountain blocks, which reflects their original use as sheep management units. Despite this original intent, GMAs are now used to manage all species of Yukon wildlife. With the exception of National Parks, the entire Yukon is covered by GMAs.
