Modelled Mean Summer Circulation and Conditions in Bute Inlet, British Columbia
This dataset contains the outputs for Bute Inlet from two simulations shown in the publication "Fjord circulation permits persistent subsurface water mass in a long, deep mid-latitude inlet" by Laura Bianucci et al., DFO Ocean Sciences Division, Pacific Region (published in the journal Ocean Science in 2024). The Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM v4.1) was run with two different sets of initial conditions for the Discovery Islands region of British Columbia, Canada, from May 24 to June 27, 2019. The "Baseline" simulation used observed initial conditions, while the "Sensitivity" simulation removed the observed cold subsurface water mass from the initial profiles. Here in this dataset, we provide 29-day averages of the following variables in a transect along Bute Inlet: potential temperature, density, along-inlet velocity, and Brunt-Väisälä frequency (N^2). The averaging properly removes the tidal effects.
Cubing rate and prediction models
__The link: *Access the data directory* is available in the section*Dataset Description Sheets; Additional Information*__.Two products are available to know the gross commercial volume of a tree according to its diameter at chest height (DHP) and its height. Their contents and the way of using them are different, but they both make it possible to obtain gross commercial volume values per tree. The first product is the **LIN3 cubing rate**. It is presented in the form of a table where the values of the gross market volume can be extracted directly. These are local rates, i.e. the height used in the general rate equation (volume prediction models) is predicted by height-DHP relationships developed per survey unit. The second product offers increased precision. It is presented in the form of several tables where the values of the gross commercial volume do not appear directly. Rather, the content of these tables is used to apply **models for predicting the height and gross commercial volume** of a tree. Height prediction models are also developed locally at the scale of survey units. The use of the product requires consultation of the document [“Models for predicting the height and gross commercial volume of trees - Method and use”] (https://mrnf.gouv.qc.ca/nos-publications/modele-prediction-hauteur-volume/).Finally, the **Predivol** tool allows users to more easily access prediction models for sample plots (PE) using a user-friendly interface that is independent of geographic information systems (GIS).** 📣 Recommendation of the Forest Inventory Directorate: ** it is preferable to use models to predict height and gross market volume in territories where they are available. A new height prediction model is available when a territory obtains the results of forest compilations. In the absence of these models, it is still possible to use the LIN3 cubing rate.**This third party metadata element was translated using an automated translation tool (Amazon Translate).**
Forest Gross Stem Volume (2022)
This dataset provides wall-to-wall maps of forest structure across Canada's 650 million hectare forested ecosystems for the year 2022, generated at a spatial resolution of 30 m. It is developed within the framework of Canada’s National Terrestrial Ecosystem Monitoring System (NTEMS). Structure estimates include key attributes such as canopy height, canopy cover, and aboveground biomass, derived using a combination of airborne lidar and Landsat-based spectral composites. Structure models were trained using the - lidar-plot framework - (Wulder et al. 2012), which integrates co-located airborne lidar data and ground plot measurements with Landsat time-series composites (Hermosilla et al. 2016). A Nearest Neighbour imputation approach was applied to estimate structural attributes across the full extent of Canada's forested area. These nationally consistent products are intended to support strategic-level forest monitoring and assessment and are not designed for operational forest management. For further details on the methods, accuracy assessment, and source data, see Matasci et al. (2018).Matasci, G., Hermosilla, T., Wulder, M.A., White, J.C., Coops, N.C., Hobart, G.W., Bolton, D.K., Tompalski, P., Bater, C.W., 2018. Merchantable forest volume in Canada 2006
Canada's National Forest Inventory (NFI) sampling program is designed to support reporting on forests at the national scale. On the other hand, continuous maps of forest attributes are required to support strategic analyses of regional policy and management issues. We have therefore produced maps covering 4.03 × 106 km2 of inventoried forest area for the 2001 base year using standardised observations from the NFI photo plots (PP) as reference data. We used the k nearest neighbours (kNN) method with 26 geospatial data layers including MODIS spectral data and climatic and topographic variables to produce maps of 127 forest attributes at a 250 × 250 m resolution. The stand-level attributes include land cover, structure, and tree species relative abundance. In this article, we report only on total live aboveground tree biomass, with all other attributes covered in the supplementary data (http://nrcresearchpress.com/doi/suppl/10.1139/cjfr-2013-0401). In general, deviations in predicted pixel-level values from those in a PP validation set are greater in mountainous regions and in areas with either low biomass or sparse PP sampling. Predicted pixel-level values are overestimated at small observed values and underestimated at large ones. Accuracy measures are improved through the spatial aggregation of pixels to 1 km2 and beyond. Overall, these new products provide unique baseline information for strategic-level analyses of forests (https://nfi.nfis.org)Collection:- **[Canada's National Forest Inventory (NFI) 2006](https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/e2fadaeb-3106-4111-9d1c-f9791d83fbf4)**

FRI: Gross merchantable volume - total
Gross merchantable volume - total (GMVTOT) is an expression of merchantable stem total volume (m3) on a per-hectare basis. Available here as a raster (GeoTIF) with a 20 m pixel resolution.Download: Here The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment, Forest Service Branch, has developed a forest resource inventory (FRI) which meets a variety of strategic and operational planning information needs for the boreal plains. Such needs include information on the general land cover, terrain, and growing stock (height, diameter, basal area, timber volume and stem density) within the provincial forest and adjacent forest fringe. This inventory provides spatially explicit information as 10 m or 20 m raster grids and as vectors polygons for relatively homogeneous forest stands or naturally non-forested areas with a 0.5 ha minimum area and a 2.0 ha median area. Gross merchantable volume per hectare - total (GMVTOT) is an expression of merchantable stem volume (m3) on a per-hectare basis. Calculations are made assuming a cut-to-length scenario, and including all stem wood from a 30 cm stump height to an 8 cm top diameter (inside bark), with a minimum bole length of 5.1 m and a minimum log length of 2.4 m for softwood and 2.7 m for hardwood. GMVTOT is available here as a color-mapped 16-bit unsigned integer raster grid in GeoTIFF format with a 20 m pixel resolution. An ArcGIS Pro layer file (*.lyrx) is supplied for viewing GMVTOT data in the following 50 m3/ha categories. Domain: [NULL, 0…1000].
