Benthic Species Presence/Absence in the Lower Bay of Fundy Derived From High Resolution Video and Still Imagery
Funded through DFO's Strategic Program for Ecosystem-based Research and Advice (SPERA), this benthic survey covers several seabed areas adjacent to Deer Island and Campobello Island, the Wolves Islands, and Grand Manan (NB) over a two-year study period (2016-2017). One hundred and fifty drift camera transects were completed within the ~91 sq-km study region collecting continuous high-definition video with periodic 4K resolution video (provided by a downward facing Blackmagic Production Camera 4K equipped with video lights). A Nikon D800 36.1 megapixel digital still imagery camera (equipped with a studio strobe light) captured seafloor images at ~30s intervals over a maximum 25-minute drift survey period. The camera was triggered by lowering the camera frame within 1 m of the seabed, releasing tension on a trigger weight suspended below the frame. Camera location was tracked using an ultra-short baseline acoustic positioning system (Tracklink 1500HA transceiver with 1505B transponder on the camera frame). Species presence/absence, abundance, and bottom type was recorded manually using PhotoQuad v1.4 software. An average field of view of 0.7 x 0.5 m was determined from a subset of digital still images within which the 10 cm diameter trigger weight was fully in view. Thirty-two key and common taxa were described using explicit taxonomic identifiers, while other species were recorded within broader general categories (e.g. unidentified Cnidaria). Identification was made to the lowest possible taxonomic level. Primary bottom-type was defined as the grain size with the most percent coverage for each image/video interval. Grain size limits were determined using the Wentworth scale. Characterization of sediment and faunal attributes of Simoom Sound, British Columbia
These datasets provide information pertaining to sediment grain size, porosity, organic content, total carbon and nitrogen concentrations, trace element concentrations, chlorophyll and phaeopigment concentrations, and meiofauna and macrofaunal abundance in Simoom Sound between November, 2000, and February, 2001. Data formatting of files were performed by Meagan Mak.Sutherland et al (2023) covers the benthic component of a broader project investigating potential modification of marine ecosystems by shrimp trawling and trapping on the central coast of British Columbia. Sediment and infaunal samples were collected before and after fishing with commercial fishing gear consisting of otter-trawl, beam-trawl, and trap-lines. Simoom Sound was sampled in November 2000 and February 2001. Tabulated data of sediment characteristics that include sediment grain size, porosity, carbon and nitrogen content, trace-element, and chlorophyll concentrations are presented in this report. In addition, the infaunal data are comprised of both macrofaunal and meiofaunal communities.
Tidal Current and Power Density Maps of Quatsino Sound, British Columbia, Derived from Hydrodynamic Modeling-Based Tidal Resource Assessments
A tidal resource assessment dataset for the Quatsino Sound region, British Columbia, was developed, including temporal maximum, mean, and minimum velocity magnitudes, standard deviations, and power density. The dataset was generated using a high-resolution 2D depth-averaged hydrodynamic model based on the Telemac-Mascaret solver, with Natural Neighbor interpolation applied for raster creation. This newly published dataset is the first in a series of regional tidal energy maps for Canada. Developed by CanmetENERGY Ottawa in collaboration with partners, these maps aim to support effective project planning and development by providing comprehensive tidal resource data across the country.Disclaimer:Potential errors in the model results may arise from inherent limitations in the topo-bathymetric data accuracy, assumptions in boundary conditions, approximations within the numerical methods, and the input data used in the numerical modeling. These factors introduce uncertainties that can affect the overall model outcomes. The model is subject to the following conditions:• Topo-bathymetric data: Obtained from electronic navigational charts and the Canadian Hydrographic Service’s (CHS) NONNA-10 Bathymetric Data packages, consolidating CHS-managed digital bathymetric sources with a maximum resolution of 10 m.• Tidal and current harmonic components: Used as boundary conditions from the TPXO9 global tidal model.• Model calibration and validation: Performed using data from Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP), surface elevations recorded at CHS tidal stations, and Lagrangian drifter measurements.• Interpolation method: Dataset outputs were generated with Natural Neighbor interpolation, which assumes smoothly varying data and may not capture sharp local gradients or features.• Modeled estimates: All values for velocity magnitudes, velocity standard deviations, and power density are modeled estimates and not direct field measurements.This dataset is intended for preliminary assessment of tidal projects only. It should not be the sole basis for making critical decisions or investments. We strongly recommend further validation and in-depth analysis. Bay of Fundy Sea Scallop Commercial Size Abundance Data
This dataset represents abundance data of commercial size Sea Scallop (Placopecten magellanicus; ≥ 80 mm shell height) from 2011-2023 from the Bay of Fundy Inshore Scallop Survey. Data is binned into 5-mm shell height bins, is prorated to an 800 m tow length and 17.5 feet (5.334 m) drag width (i.e., representing an area swept of 4267 m2), and was collected using unlined dredge gear. Each row represents a tow and contains information such as tow date, cruise name, gear type, geographical coordinates (decimal degrees, WGS 84) and the Scallop Production Area in which the tow took place. Survey protocols are documented in Glass (2017). This dataset contains tow data from a comparative survey conducted in 2012 (Smith et al., 2013).
