NWT Aster DEM Basemap
The ASTER instrument that was launched onboard NASA’s Terra spacecraft in December 1999 has an along-track stereoscopic capability using two telescopes in its near infrared spectral band to acquire data from nadir and backward views. Over 1.2 million scenes (level-1A products) acquired between March 2000 and August 2008 were used to generate the ASTER Global DEM (ASTGTM) collection. For more information, please see the metadata link above.
Ocean Data Inventory ( ODI ): A Database of Ocean Current, Temperature and Salinity Time Series for the Northwest Atlantic
The Ocean Data Inventory database is an inventory of all of the oceanographic time series data held by the Ocean Science Division at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. The data archive includes about 5800 current meter and acoustic doppler time series, 4500 coastal temperature time series from thermographs, as well as a small number (200) of tide gauges. Many of the current meters also have temperature and salinity sensors. The area for which there are data is roughly defined as the North Atlantic and Arctic from 30° - 82° N, although there are some minor amounts of data from other parts of the world. The time period is from 1960 to present. The database is updated on a regular basis.
Institute of Ocean Sciences Moored Instrument Data (Pacific), 1965-present
Moored instrument time series data include current velocity, temperature, salinity, oxygen, fluorescence, transmissivity, turbidity, sediment trap data and particle capture of carbon, nitrogen, and silicon. These data were collected by researchers from the Institute of Ocean Sciences, Sidney, BC, from locations in the North Pacific. The data links below are only a representative sample of the entire collection. Vehicle and sonde data from an autonomous underwater vehicle survey of Musquash Marine Protected Area
The Coastal Environmental Baseline Program is a multi-year Fisheries and Oceans Canada initiative designed to work with Indigenous and local communities and other key parties to collect coastal environmental data at six pilot sites across Canada (Port of Vancouver, Port of Prince Rupert, Lower St. Lawrence Estuary, Port of Saint John, Placentia Bay, and Iqaluit). The goal of the Program is to gather local information in these areas in effort to build a better understanding of marine ecological conditions. The Maritimes region has developed a habitat classification program to align with the oceanographic interests and data needs of local communities and stakeholders, with the goal of sharing this information via open data. In 2020, a habitat survey in the lower Musquash Marine Protected Area (MPA) was undertaken to further develop this project, using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) equipped with high-frequency (450 kHz) side scan sonar to build a habitat map of the MPA. This dataset includes mosaicked series of sonar images (raw & position-corrected versions), covering roughly 6 km2 of marine and intertidal areas in the Musquash MPA. Doppler Velocity logs and mission-specific files for each survey are also included, along with detailed methodological documentation. These data were generated from 17 separate survey missions that were completed in August, September and October 2020.
Pelagic Shark Satellite Tag data - Porbeagle
The porbeagle shark (Lamna nasus), is a species found in Atlantic Canadian waters which is encountered in commercial and recreational fisheries. Pop-up Satellite Archival Tags (PSAT) from Wildlife Computers were applied to porbeagle sharks from 2005 to 2021 to collect data on depth (pressure), temperature and ambient light level (for position estimation). Deployments were conducted in Canada and the Faroe Islands on commercial, recreational and scientific charters, typically in summer and fall but some over winter when the porbeagle commercial fishery was active in Canada. A variety of tag models were deployed: PAT 4 (n=1), Mk10 (N=41), and MiniPAT (N=15) and 51 of 57 tags reported. One individual shark was recaptured and the physical tag was returned. The porbeagle sharks tagged ranged in size from 76 cm to 249 cm Fork Length (curved); 42 were female, 15 were male. Time at liberty ranged from 4 – 356 days and 14 tags remained on for the programmed duration. Raw data transmitted from the PSAT’s after release was processed through Wildlife Computers software (GPE3) to get summary files, assuming a maximum swimming speed of 2m/s, NOAA OI SST V2 High Resolution data set for SST reference and ETOPO1-Bedrock dataset for bathymetry reference. The maximum likelihood position estimates are available in .csv and .kmz format and depth and temperature profiles are also in .csv format. Other tag outputs as well as metadata from the deployments can be obtained upon request from: warren.joyce@dfo-mpo.gc.ca or heather.bowlby@dfo-mpo.gc.ca.
Pelagic Shark Satellite Tag data - Mako Shark
The mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus), is a species found in Atlantic Canadian waters which is encountered in commercial and recreational fisheries. Pop-up Satellite Archival Tags (PSAT) from Wildlife Computers were applied to mako sharks from 2011 to 2013 to collect data on depth (pressure), temperature and ambient light level (for position estimation). Deployments were conducted in Canada on commercial vessels, typically in summer and fall from July to October. Two types of tag models were deployed: Mk10 (N=28), and MiniPAT (N=9) and 28 of 37 tags reported (one female shark was recaptured). The mako sharks tagged ranged in size from 80 cm to 229 cm Fork Length (curved); 13 were female, 17 were male, and 7 were unknown sex. Time at liberty ranged from 0 – 185 days and 6 tags remained on for the programmed duration.
Great Lakes Aquatic Invasive Species Surveillance Database
The Aquatic Invasive Species Surveillance Database is a compilation of fish community and habitat data from DFO’s Aquatic Invasive Species and Invasive Carp Program early detection surveillance efforts in Canadian waters of the Great Lakes basin. Data includes: sampling site location, date, fish species and counts, and associated habitat information. Annual project-specific details including purpose/objectives and study methodology are often reported in the DFO Canadian manuscript report of fisheries and aquatic sciences series.
Historic - Flood Susceptibility Mapping
This series of historic flood susceptibility maps comes from an XGBboost machine learning model trained on major floods from 2005 to 2023. The trained model is then run for each year from 2000 to 2023, including unique temporal characteristics of temperature, precipitation, land use land cover and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), to predict the flood susceptibility of any given year. This dataset forms part of a broader collection of flood susceptibility datasets, offering related information and analyses. The collection includes an overview page with associated publications, historic susceptibility values, temporal trends, and future projections.- [Collection – Flood Susceptibility Mapping]( https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/1074f781-85d3-4c86-86cb-fd1c339197dc)- [Trends and Extremes – Flood Susceptibility Mapping]( https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/3202e0a0-0afb-4120-b102-b0c41f0fb9eb)- [Future - Flood Susceptibility Mapping]( https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/c00f95a3-7bab-4d28-b9cc-b30f06b5afd2)
Ontario Dam Inventory
The Ontario Dam Inventory (ODI) is an inventory of medium and large dams throughout Ontario. It uses a point-based system (x, y location) to identify each dam location. The ODI does not contain: * small dams * small water control structures * beaver dams * water crossings * road embankments * locks * falls * rapids * culverts Each dam location has an identifier that can be used to link to other dam information databases.
