Minimum Two-weekly Sea Ice Concentration in the Canadian Beaufort Sea (1998-2020)
This record contains two-weekly minimum sea ice concentration images of the Canadian Beaufort Sea at 1.1 km resolution. The dataset originated from the Canadian Ice Service (CIS) Digital Archive weekly regional charts for the western Arctic (See “additional credit” for a link to these data), created by synthesis of remotely-sensed, ship and airborne observations (Fequet, 2005). These vector ice charts were gridded at 1.1 km resolution and aggregated into two-week composites by calculating the minimum sea-ice concentration at each grid cell over each two-week interval in each year. Week numbers were defined using the ISO 8601 convention, and sea-ice concentration isrepresented in tenths (with 0/10 corresponding to an ice-free pixel, ranging to 10/10 corresponding to 100% pixel coverage with sea-ice). The result is 12 composite images per year in 1998 through 2020 (23 years), corresponding to https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/ee27e86f-7b18-4e3f-8444-0c5efb6110a4. Beluga whale seasonal distribution in the St. Lawrence Estuary
This layer represents the seasonal distribution of St. Lawrence Estuary beluga whale population (Delphinapterus leucas). Summer distribution is based on many surveys conducted between the end of August and early September. Fall and winter distributions are based on aerial surveys conducted during mid-October, November and from December to March 1989-1990. Spring distribution is based on anecdotal reports and two aerial surveys conducted in late April and early June 1990.Beluga whale seasonal distribution can change according to sea ice cover, predation risk and food availability. This layer represents the general seasonal distribution and does not account for the sexual segregation among males and females in the St. Lawrence Estuary.This layer do not represent the beluga's critical habitat. Argo Canada
Argo is a key component of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) with an array of about 4,000 autonomous instruments reporting on ocean conditions. These floats collect data on ocean temperature and salinity, and in some cases, additional properties that characterize the ocean’s biological and chemical processes. Established in 1999, Argo represents an international collaboration involving contribution from more than 30 nations. Data from Argo floats are made publicly available within 24 hours of collection time, for free. The data provide valuable information on changes to the Earth's climate and hydrological cycle. They are used for a variety of purposes, such as assessing climate change, improving weather forecasts and developing ocean models.Argo Canada, led by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, has been a key contributor to the International Argo Program since its inception in 2001 . The program has been supported by contributions from Department of Environment and Climate Change Canada, Department of National Defense, Dalhousie University, University of Victoria and Ocean Networks Canada.
Percent of Average Precipitation
Percent of Average Precipitation represents the accumulation of precipitation for a location, divided by the long term average value. The long term average value is defined as the average amount over the 1981 – 2010 period. Products are produced for the following timeframes: Agricultural Year, Growing Season, Winter Season, as well as rolling products for 30, 60, 90, 180, 270, 365, 730, 1095, 1460 and 1825 days.
Vessel Density Mapping of 2017 AIS Data in the Northwest Atlantic
The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a global, satellite-based and terrestrial-based ship tracking system that uses shipborne equipment to remotely track vessel identification and positional information and is typically required on vessels of 300 gross tonnage or more on an international voyage, of 500 gross tonnage or more not on an international voyage, and passenger ships of all sizes. AIS tracking technologies are primarily used in support of real-time maritime domain awareness and for maritime security and safety of life at sea. This report describes a geographic information system (GIS) analysis of 2019 AIS data to produce yearly and monthly vessel density maps of all vessel classes combined and yearly density maps of each vessel class. The year 2019 was selected to portray shipping densities in a pre-COVID 19 pandemic depiction of the maritime transport sector in the Northwest Atlantic. Vessel density map applications include use in spatial analysis and decision support for marine spatial planning. In 2023 the process was applied to the years 2013 through to 2022 and were made available using the same processes that were applied to the original 2019 datasets.

xSO4 Wet Deposition Maps
Annual and five-year (5YA) average wet deposition maps for the non-sea-salt sulfate ion are available. The file formats include geodatabase files (*.gdb) compatible with geospatial software (e.g. ESRI ArcGIS) and KMZ files compatible with virtual globe software (e.g. Google Earth™). Maps can also be viewed online via Open Maps and the ArcGIS online viewer. Annual deposition from each site was screened for completeness using the following criteria: (1) precipitation amounts were recorded for >90% of the year and >60% of each quarter, and (2) sulfate concentrations were reported for >70% of the precipitation measured over the year and for >60% of each quarter. Five-year average wet deposition values are averaged annual deposition values with a completeness criterion >60% for the five-year period. Units for wet deposition fluxes are in kg of xSO4 per hectare per year (kg ha-1 y-1).
