This dataset provides a geographical location (in decimal degrees to the nearest second) for all officially named geographical features within the Province of Manitoba.The purpose of this dataset is to provide a geographical location (in decimal degrees to the nearest second) for all officially named geographical features within the Province of Manitoba, as per the Manitoba Geographical Names Program. The program’s mission is to: “embrace the active preservation of the province’s culture through its toponymy, and provides a naming authority for the enhancement, maintenance, dissemination, and protection of Manitoba’s geographical nomenclature recognizing the integral role geographical names play in our daily lives including their essential value to our scientific, commercial, and economic world.”  As part of the program, staff administer and maintain all nomenclature records, an automated names information system, a resource library and archives, supplementary name location maps, a bibliography of name studies, and a commemorative names project. The Manitoba’s Geographical Names database contains more than 24, 000 official and heritage place names found throughout Manitoba. For each place name, the data set contains geographic coordinates, the type of feature, the name’s approval data, its location reference, plus any heritage information recorded about the name. Geographical Name (Geographical_Name): Current official name. Feature Code (Feature_Code): Numeric code used to classify toponyms based on the nature of the related geographical feature. NTS 250,000 Map Sheet (NTS_250_000_Map_Sheet): Map number of the National Topographic System (NTS) 1:250 000 map sheet that contains the centroid of the toponym.  NTS 50,000 Submap Sheet (NTS_50_000_Submap_Sheet): Map number of the National Topographic System (NTS) 1:50 000 map sheet that contains the centroid of the toponym. Latitude (Latitude): Latitude in Decimal Degrees. Longitude (Longitude): Longitude in Decimal Degrees. Casualty Hometown (Casualty_Hometown): Hometown that was provided by the casualty of war at time of enlistment.  Casualty Regimental Number (Casualty_Regimental_Number): Regimental number of the casualty of war at the time of their death. Casualty Rank (Casualty_Rank): Rank of the casualty of war at the time of their death. Casualty Surname (Casualty_Surname): Surname of the casualty of war at the time of their death. Casualty Given Name(s) (Casualty_Given_Name_s_): Given name(s) of the casualty of war at the time of their death.  Casualty Date of Death (Casualty_Date_of_Death): Date of death for the casualty of war. As part of the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007'08 and 2008'09 activities, and related objectives of the Commission for the Geological Map of the World (CGMW), nations of the circumpolar Arctic have co-operated to produce a new bedrock geology map and related digital map database at a scale of 1:5 000 000. The map, released in north polar stereographic projection using the World Geodetic System (WGS) 84 datum, includes complete geological and physiographic coverage of all onshore and offshore bedrock areas north of latitude 60° north.

This interactive map is a collaborative project by Natural Resources Canada and the federal, provincial and territorial members of the Geographical Names Board of Canada. The map illustrates a sample of close to 500 places in Canada named for women from a range of backgrounds who have been remembered for many different reasons. Each point on the map is categorized by a theme, and contains a short description of the person behind that place name. The descriptions reveal that information about these women and the places named for them varies widely; some are well-known and well-documented figures, while little is known about others.

The VMap1 collection is a legacy product that is no longer supported. It may not meet current government standards.VMap1 is a vector digital topographic reference product developed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and The Department of National Defence (DND). VMap1 complies with international military specifications vector map, level 1. There are 24 VMap1 libraries covering the Canadian territory. The National Topographic Data Base (NTDB) at scale of 1:250 000 is the main source used to populate the Canadian VMap1 Libraries. Administrative Boundaries from Statistics Canada are used to add international borders, provincial and Indian reserve limits. NRCan paper maps at scale of 1:250 000 and the information in the Canadian Geographical Names Data Base (CGNDB) are used to capture the names. The JOG (Joint Operations Graphic) paper maps were used by DND for the production of libraries 37, 38 and 66. Topographic features mainly from the NTDB have not been updated. VMap1 is published once and no product revision is planned.
