Dinoflagellate Communities in the Ports of Churchill (MB), Deception Bay (QC), Iqaluit (NU) and Milne Inlet (NU)
The data were collected during two research projects:Development of community-based monitoring for aquatic invasive species in the Canadian Arctic - preparing for increased shipping related to resource development and climate change;Diversity of pelagic primary producers in coastal habitats and the potential for harmful blooms in Eastern Canadian Arctic, with a focus near Iqaluit, Nunavut.Funding was provided by Polar Knowledge Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (Strategic Program for Ecosystem-based Research and Advice, Aquatic Invasive Species Program and Oceans Ocean Protection Plan) and the Nunavik Marine Region Wildlife Board.These data are the abundance, richness and diversity of dinoflagellate communities in Canadian Arctic seaports to provide baseline data and to verify the presence of potential non-indigenous species and harmful taxa. These data can be used as a reference source for monitoring the introduction of potentially non-native species introduced into Arctic ports where shipping activities are high.SAMPLINGDinoflagellate samples were collected using a 20 μm (30 cm diameter) Nitex® plankton net during August in Churchill (MB) (2007 and 2015), in Deception Bay (QC ) (2016), in Iqaluit (NU) (2015 and 2019) and in Milne Inlet (2017). Samples were collected from 1 m of the surface to 1 m above the bottom.PREPARATION : Samples were stored in 4% formaldehyde. Sample preparation and counting were performed using the Utermöhl method.OBSERVATION : Samples were observed using an inverted microscope (NIKON Eclipse TE-2000-U) under a magnification of 200x.ABUNDANCE : The calculation of the abundance of dinoflagellates (cell / liter) was carried out as follows: Number of cells X Volume of the bottle / Volume of the Utermöhl chamber / (pi X Radius^2 X Depth) X 1000ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLESEnvironmental data were measured using a CTD and a Secchi disk. Turkey Lakes Watershed Study
The Turkey Lakes Watershed Study (TLWS) was established in 1979 and is one of the longest running ecosystem studies in Canada. It is 10.5 km2 and is located approximately 60 km north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario at the northern margin of the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence forest region. Researchers from Natural Resources Canada, Environment Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada established the research watershed to evaluate the impacts of acid rain on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Since its inception, the study has taken a multi-disciplinary approach to investigating the processes that govern ecosystem responses to natural and anthropogenic perturbations.The goal of the TLWS is to obtain a whole-ecosystem analysis of the biogeochemical processes operating at the site. This permits system models to be developed and validated. The holistic approach that has been adopted from the outset allows research to evolve and expand from its original acidification focus to include evaluations of other environmental issues.Partnerships and collaboration are part of the founding principles behind the TLWS to improve our ability to measure, model and predict effects of human activity on ecosystem function. Over time, research and monitoring have expanded to explore the effects of forest harvesting, climate change, aquatic habitat manipulations and toxic contaminants. Advancements of our scientific knowledge of forest ecosystems and a baseline of long-term environmental data enables study results to inform Canadian governments on environmental policy and forest management legislation.Hydrological, meteorological, and vegetation data collected by scientists at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre is included in this directory. Eastern Canada Marine Spatial Planning Areas
Three marine spatial planning areas are delineated in Eastern Canada to define the spatial extents of marine spatial plans being led by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO): the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence (EGSL), the Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Shelves, and the Scotian Shelf and Bay of Fundy. The EGSL planning area includes the St. Lawrence River estuary from northeast of Île d’Orléans, Quebec, the Saguenay River estuary, and the entire Gulf of St. Lawrence as far north as the Strait of Belle Isle (NAFO Divisions 4RST). The NL Shelves planning area includes areas off southern, eastern and northern Newfoundland, part of the Churchill River and Lake Melville, as well as off the Labrador coast to the extent of the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) (NAFO Divisions 2GHJ and 3KLNOP). The Scotian Shelf and Bay of Fundy planning area includes DFO Maritimes’ administrative region off the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia to the extent of the EEZ, the Bay of Fundy and the Canadian portion of the Gulf of Maine (NAFO Divisions 4VWX, 5Ze, and the Canadian portion of 5Y). The French EEZ for St. Pierre et Miquelon is excluded from the three planning areas. These planning areas are derived from Federal Marine Bioregions (https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/23eb8b56-dac8-4efc-be7c-b8fa11ba62e9) that were developed by a Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat process using ecosystem-based management principles to define 13 ecological bioregions that have informed but not directed DFO implementation of marine spatial planning.

This spatial data represents the boundaries of Manitoba's forest sections. Forest sections are administrative areas comprised of Forest Management Units (FMU's). There are 14 uniquely named forest sections in Manitoba, 9 of which are capable of growing commercial forests.Manitoba's f orest sections are administrative areas comprised of Forest Management Units (FMU's). The Aspen Parkland forest section in the south along with the northern forest sections of Boreal Shield, Taiga Shield, Hudson Plains and Southern Arctic are incapable of growing commercial forests. The four northern forest sections were previously called the 'white zone' and all have retained the previous white zone forest section number of 10. The northern forest section boundaries are based on the following ecozones:Hudson Plains: A subarctic area encompassing the coastal areas of Hudson Bay. The area is formed into a wide, level plain, characterised by poor drainage that has resulted in large and numerous peatlands, lakes, coastal marshes, and tidal flats. Alder, willow, black spruce, and tamarack are the most common tree species.Taiga Shield: Terrain is typically flat or with rolling hills caused by glacial retreat; long eskers and uplands are common. Shallow soils remain damp year-round and regularly freeze and thaw; this leads to tilted growing trees, sometimes called ‘drunken forests’. The northern edge of the forest section is delineated by the tree line. Black spruce, jack pine, birch, tamarack, white spruce, balsam fir, trembling aspen, and balsam poplar are common tree species.Southern Arctic: The southern boundary designated the tree line. Moraines, eskers, kettle lakes, and ponds are common. Permafrost occurs in a continuous sheet throughout the section; polygonal hummocks often result from the freeze and thaw of the soils.Boreal Shield : This forest section represents the upper boundary of the boreal shield ecozone, characterised by long, cold winters and warm summers. Permafrost is widespread. Uplands and lowland tree species are common. Soil varies from poorly drained muskeg to glacially-deposited sand. Coniferous trees include white and black spruce, balsam fir, jack pine, and tamarack; hardwood tree species include birch, trembling aspen, and balsam poplar. Forest fires and insect outbreaks are the natural drivers of forest succession. The ten forest sections south of forest section 10 are sometimes referred to as the 'green zone' and include the following: Pineland, Aspen Parkland, Mountain, Interlake, Lake Winnipeg East, Churchill, Nelson River, Hayes River, Saskatchewan River and Highrock. 2019 - NL Churchill 2019 1m - Mosaic of High Resolution Digital Elevation Model (HRDEM) by LiDAR acquisition project
High-Resolution Digital Elevation Model (HRDEM) generated from LiDAR. This data collection includes a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and a Digital Surface Model (DSM). The HRDEM product is referenced to the Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 2013 (CGVD2013). Source data for HRDEM datasets is acquired through multiple projects with different partners. Since data is being acquired by project, there is no integration or edgematching done between projects. The data in this collection have been reprojected from the source reference system to the Canada Atlas Lambert projection (EPSG:3979). **This third party metadata element follows the Spatio Temporal Asset Catalog (STAC) specification.**
