Great Lakes Aquatic Invasive Species Surveillance Database
The Aquatic Invasive Species Surveillance Database is a compilation of fish community and habitat data from DFO’s Aquatic Invasive Species and Invasive Carp Program early detection surveillance efforts in Canadian waters of the Great Lakes basin. Data includes: sampling site location, date, fish species and counts, and associated habitat information. Annual project-specific details including purpose/objectives and study methodology are often reported in the DFO Canadian manuscript report of fisheries and aquatic sciences series.
Aquatic Invasive Species European Green Crab (Carcinus maenas) Monitoring, British Columbia
Aquatic invasive species pose economic and ecological threats to Canada's coastal waters. In response, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has established monitoring programs to detect and track the spread of aquatic invasive species, including European Green Crab, in Canadian waters. Fukui traps have been deployed annually at both new and long-term monitoring locations throughout coastal British Columbia.

Site locations of aquatic invasive species occurrences throughout the province. The aquatic invasive species include species of amphibians, fishes, invertebrates, plants, alga and turtles. This spatial dataset was compiled from a number of data sources including The Invasive Plant Council of BC; the Beaty Biodiversity Museum; the Royal BC Museum; the Fisheries Information Summary System; E-Flora BC; Electronic Atlas of Plants of BC; and from private data compilations(spreadsheets) and personal consultation with BC Ministry of Environment staff and other local experts, peer-reviewed articles and other unpublished technical reports. Manitoba Waterbody Data
This point feature layer contains both general and detailed information on waterbodies in Manitoba which are associated with the Lake Information for Anglers program.The point data contained within this layer represent the centroids of waterbodies in Manitoba. The layer describes a number of different attributes about a waterbody including, where available: average depth, aquatic invasive species information, regulatory links, presence of contours, waterbody specific PDF, fish assessment information, species information and coordinates. The waterbody data layer, along with related information, can be found at the Manitoba Lake Information For Anglers app. The project was initiated by Manitoba Wildlife and Fisheries Branch with funding from the Fish and Wildlife Enhancement Fund. Data is provided by Manitoba Wildlife and Fisheries Branch, Swan Valley Sport Fishing and Manitoba Watershed Districts. For additional information visit Manitoba Fisheries. The dataset includes the following fields (Alias (Name): Description) Waterbody ID (WATERBODY_ID): Unique identifier for an individual waterbody. Waterbody Name (WATERBODY_NAME): Name of the waterbody. Surface Area (km2) (SURFACE_AREA): Surface area of the waterbody in square kilometres. Average Depth (m) (AVERAGE_DEPTH_M): Average depth of a waterbody, if bathymetric data is available. Secchi (SECCHI): Indicates whether data exists for secchi depth in the waterbody (YES/NO). Secchi Depth (m) (SECCHI_DEPTH): Depth in meters of the visibility of a secchi disk. Fishing Division (FISHING_DIVISION): Indicates which fishing division the waterbody centroid is within. Fishing Division Special Area (SPECIAL_AREA): Indicates if the waterbody is within the special walleye areas (A or B). Please refer to the Angling Guide for details. UTM Zone (ZONE): Indicates which UTM zone the waterbody is in. Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS): Indicates the known or unknown presence of aquatic invasive species. Aquatic Invasive Species Control Zone (AIS_CONTROL_ZONE): Indicates which aquatic invasive species control zone a waterbody is within. High Quality Management (HIGH_QUALITY_MANAGEMENT): Indicates whether the waterbody falls under the high quality management angling regulations in Manitoba (TRUE/FALSE). HQM Description (HQM_DESCRIPTION): Indicates the high quality management provisions based on the fishing division the waterbody is in (only applies if the waterbody is a High Quality Management waterbody). Boat Launch Photo (BOAT_LAUNCH_PHOTO): Contains a link (URL) that directs users to a photo of the launch. Stocked (STOCKED): Indicates whether the lake has been stocked with fish in the past (TRUE/FALSE). Species (SPECIES): A list of gamefish species that are known to have existed in the waterbody historically. Currently contains no info. Assessment (ASSESSMENT): Indicates whether an assessment PDF is available for the waterbody (YES/NO). Fisheries Assessment Link (FISHERIES_ASSESSMENT_LINK): Contains a link that directs users to a PDF document that contains information about species, fish age demographics, and master angler records. Contours (CONTOURS): Indicates whether contour data exists for the waterbody (YES/NO). Lat (DD) (LAT_DD): Latitudinal coordinates of the representative centroid of the waterbody in decimal degrees. Species distribution models and occurrence data for marine invasive species hotspot identification
Since 2005, Fisheries and Oceans Canada has been collecting monitoring data for aquatic invasive species (e.g. https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/8d87f574-0661-40a0-822f-e9eabc35780d, https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/503a957e-7d6b-11e9-aef3-f48c505b2a29, https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/8661edcf-f525-4758-a051-cb3fc8c74423). This monitoring data, as well additional occurrence information from online databases and the scientific literature, have been paired with high resolution environmental data and oceanographic models in species distribution models that predict the present-day and future potential distributions of 12 moderate to high risk invasive species on Canada’s east and west coasts. Future distributions were predicted for 2075, under Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s fifth Assessment Report. Present-day and future richness of these species (i.e., hotspots) has also been estimated by summing their occurrence probabilities. This data set includes the occurrence locations of each species, the present-day and future species distribution modeling results for each species, and the estimated species richness. Canada Nature Fund for Species at Risk (CNFASAR) Priority Places and Priority Marine Threats
The Canada Nature Fund for Aquatic Species at Risk (CNFASAR) is a contribution program that focuses on providing funding for recovery and threat mitigation activities in nine priority places and to address two marine threats to aquatic species at risk. The Priority Places and Marine Threats layer supports CNFASAR by delineating the location of the places and threats.The Canada Nature Fund for Aquatic Species at Risk (CNFASAR) supports applicants in the design and delivery of stewardship projects. These projects support the recovery and protection of aquatic species at risk. DFO has identified 2 priority marine threats and 9 priority places as the focus for projects funded by CNFASAR, these areas are included in this dataset.
Gulf Region Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Biofouling Monitoring Dataset
PURPOSE:Provide early detection of newly arrived Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) and determine the spread, establishment and spatial distribution of existing AIS within marine waters of the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (sGSL), DFO Gulf Region boundaries (northern and eastern coastal shores of NB, Gulf shore of NS, and PEI shoreline). DESCRIPTION:DFO Science monitors for AIS in the Gulf Region. The data collected from DFO's biofouling monitoring program provides an overview of the distribution and abundance of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) in the Gulf Region. This information can be used by the general public, scientists and DFO managers.Monitoring program targeting aquatic invasive species (AIS). Native biofouling species are not included in this dataset. PARAMETERS COLLECTED:Air and water temperature, salinity, depth, dissolved oxygen, weather conditions, list of biofouling AIS, percent cover of AIS on PVC plates.NOTES ON QUALITY CONTROL:Each sample and species is processed and identified in a standardized fashion using standardized DFO Science AIS protocols and taxonomic references. Data is manually entered into DFO Gulf Region's AIS Science biofouling database and randomly verified for accuracy.SAMPLING METHODS:Biofouling monitoring is conducted using PVC collector plates that are deployed in the water column approximately 1 meter below the sea surface in the spring of each year. Biofouling organisms settle on these plates which are collected in the fall of the same year. Abundances of AIS are given as percent plate cover. Physico-chemical data including temperature, conductivity, and depth as well as weather conditions are noted at each geo-referenced biofouling monitoring site during initial deployment and at time of retrieval. All biofouling organisms settled on the underside of the PVC plates are noted and percent cover of each AIS is estimated.USE LIMITATION:To ensure scientific integrity and appropriate use of the data, we would encourage you to contact the data custodian.
Updated Species Distribution Models for Marine Invasive Species Hotspot Identification
Monitoring data from DFO invasive species monitoring programs, along with occurrence information from online databases and the scientific literature, have been paired with high resolution environmental data and oceanographic models in species distribution models that predict present-day and project future distributions of 24 non-indigenous species (NIS) on North America`s east coast, and 31 NIS on its west coast. Future distributions were predicted for 2100, under Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s fifth Assessment Report. Present-day and future richness of these species (i.e., hotspots) have been estimated by summing the occurrence probabilities of NIS. Golden star tunicate (Botryllus schlosseri) - Aquatic Invasive Species Program - Newfoundland and Labrador Region
AIS NL Biofouling Species Fisheries and Oceans Canada's (DFO) National Marine Biofouling Monitoring Program conducts annual field surveys to monitor the introduction, establishment, spread, species richness, and relative abundance of native and some non-native species in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Region since 2006. Standardized monitoring protocols employed by DFO's NL, Maritimes, Gulf, and Quebec regions include biofouling collector plates deployed from May to October at georeferenced intertidal and shallow subtidal sites, including public docks, and public and private marinas and nautical clubs. Initially, (2006-2017), the collectors consisted of three 10 cm by 10 cm PVC plates deployed in a vertical array and spaced approximately 40 cm apart, with the shallowest plate suspended at least 1 m below the surface to sample subtidal and shallow intertidal species (McKenzie et al 2016a). Three replicate arrays were deployed at least 5 m apart per site. Since 2018, collector networks have been modified to improve statistical replication, including up to 10 individual collectors deployed per site at 1 m depth and at least 5 m apart (as above) from May to October. Since 2006, seven invasive biofouling organisms have been detected in Newfoundland and Labrador harbours, marinas and coastal areas.Should be cited as follows: DFO Newfoundland and Labrador Region Aquatic Invasive Species Marine Biofouling Monitoring Program. It was reported in Argentia by the US Navy around 1945. It was found in 2006 on wharf structures in Argentia, Placentia Bay during the first AIS survey (Callahan et al 2010). This colonial tunicate is recognized by it star shaped grouping of individuals within the colony. It is currently found in Placentia Bay, Fortune Bay, St. Mary’s Bay, Conception Bay and the west coast of NL. The data provided here indicates the detections of this AIS in coastal NL.From 2018-2022, the Coastal Environmental Baseline Program provided additional support to enhance sampling efforts in Placentia Bay.
