Biodiversity of the whelk (Buccinum) dredge survey in the St. Lawrence Estuary
A research survey on the common whelk (Buccinum undatum) has been conducted biennially in three sectors of the St. Lawrence Estuary since 2005 to assess the abundance of whelk and benthic species associated with whelk habitat. Only data for benthic species associated with whelk habitat are presented in this dataset. The survey was initiated in 2005 following the intensive fishery of the early 2000s in the Upper North Shore region. The three sectors covered by the survey were based on the distribution of commercial fishing effort from 2001 to 2004.Surveys were conducted between mid-July and early August from 2005 to 2019 on the North Shore of the St. Lawrence Estuary between Portneuf-sur-Mer and Baie-Comeau according to a fixed station sampling design. Three sectors were surveyed at each survey: Forestville (69°03'11"W-48°39'24"N and 68°56'02"W-48°46'16"N), Pointe-aux-Outardes (68°35'53"W-48°59'32"N and 68°25'30"W-49°01'06"N) and Baie-Comeau (68°06'04"W-49°08'40"N and 68°05'10"W-49°12'26"N). Since 2007, the sampling plan consists of 55 stations in Forestville, 26 stations in Pointe-aux-Outardes and 11 stations in Baie-Comeau. The targeted depth interval at the three sectors was approximately 5 to 40 m. Specimens were collected using a Digby-type scallop dredge with a total width of 3.04 m consisting of four 19 mm mesh Vexar™ lined baskets to harvest small individuals. Start and end positions were recorded to calculate the distance traveled at each tow using the geosphere library in R. Since 2011, the average tow distance was approximately 300 m. The area covered at each tow was the product of the dredge width and distance.The three files provided (DarwinCore format) are complementary and are linked by the "eventID" key. The "event_information" file includes generic event information, including date and location. The "additional_information_event_and_occurrence" file includes sample size, sampling protocol and sampling effort, among others. The "taxon_occurrence" file includes the taxonomy of the species observed, identified to the species or lowest possible taxonomic level. For abundance and biomass estimates, contact Virginie Roy (virginie.roy@dfo-mpo.gc.ca).For quality controls, all taxonomic names were checked against the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) to match recognized standards. The WoRMS match was placed in the "scientificNameID" field of the occurrence file. Special cases were noted in "identificationRemarks" and selected specimens were confirmed using field photos. Data quality checks were performed using the R obistools and worrms libraries. All sampling locations were spatially validated.

Forest Basal Area (2015)
Forest Basal Area 2015Cross-sectional area of tree stems at breast height. It is developed within the framework of Canada’s National Terrestrial Ecosystem Monitoring System (NTEMS). The sum of the cross-sectional area (i.e. basal area) of each tree in square metres in a plot, divided by the area of the plot (units = m2ha). Products relating the structure of Canada's forested ecosystems have been generated and made openly accessible. The shared products are based upon peer-reviewed science and relate aspects of forest structure including: (i) metrics calculated directly from the lidar point cloud with heights normalized to heights above the ground surface (e.g., canopy cover, height), and (ii) modelled inventory attributes, derived using an area-based approach generated by using co-located ground plot and ALS data (e.g., volume, biomass). Forest structure estimates were generated by combining information from lidar plots (Wulder et al. 2012) with Landsat pixel-based composites (White et al. 2014; Hermosilla et al. 2016) using a nearest neighbour imputation approach with a Random Forests-based distance metric. These products were generated for strategic-level forest monitoring information needs and are not intended to support operational-level forest management. Manitoba Forest Management Units – Version 4
This feature class represents Manitoba's Forest Management Unit (FMU) boundaries.Forest Management Units (FMU's) define a forested area with common forest conditions that are managed in a similar manner. Forest Sections are comprised of FMU's. Forest inventories within Forest Management Units are analysed to determine allowable harvest limits of softwood and hardwood tree species within each Forest Management Unit. Version 3: The southern portion of FMU 67 within the Highrock Forest Section has been adjusted to align with base features captured in 2009. Additionally, an 11 hectare portion of the Saskatchewan River Forest Section (FMU 59) has been added to the Highrock Forest Section. Version 4: The northern portion of FMU 68 along the Rail Haul within the Highrock Forest Section has been adjust so that the boundary falls within water only. Additionally, version 4 splits the 'White Zone' forest section (FMU 76) by ecozones, creating FMU 76 (Taiga Shield), FMU 77 (Southern Arctic), FMU 78 (Hudson Plain) and FMU 79 (Boreal Shield). Saskatchewan Woodland Caribou Ranges and Administrative Units
Saskatchewan's woodland caribou range is divided into two conservation units, based on the ecozone boundaries of the boreal shield (SK1) and the boreal plain (SK2). The SK2 Caribou Conservation Unit is further divided into three administrative units: SK2 East, SK2 Central and SK2 West.The SK1 (Boreal Shield) Caribou Conservation Unit encompasses the rocky shield, sandy plains and many lakes of northern Saskatchewan. The SK2 (Boreal Plain) Caribou Conservation Unit encompasses the more productive mixed-wood forests and lakes of central Saskatchewan, including large areas of low-lying peatlands. While these two units represent important differences in ecological conditions (e.g., habitat types, fire regimes, landforms, etc.) and human land use and management (e.g., overall levels and types of land use, fire management, etc.), the boundary between SK1 and SK2 does not represent a population boundary, as caribou move freely between the two areas. The large size of the SK2 Caribou Conservation Unit (i.e., 109,717 km2) is not well suited for range assessment and range planning activities, given the large variation in ecological conditions, habitat types, land use, and natural disturbance regimes across the Boreal Plain of Saskatchewan. As a result, three smaller caribou administrative units within SK2 were developed: SK2 East, SK2 Central and SK2 West. SK2 West is further subdivided into two smaller management subunits. At present, the SK1 area has not been sub-divided into administrative units. Timber Supply Areas
Represents timber supply area and other land use boundaries in the province of Saskatchewan. Timber supply areas are the primary management unit used for the allocation of timber harvest, licensing, forest management planning and harvest volume schedules.The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment regulates forestry activities on Crown “forest lands” — as defined by The Forest Resources Management Act — using several types of licenses and permits: Forest Management Agreement (FMA)A forest management agreement is a 20-year agreement, typically with a larger forest company, conferring long-term harvesting rights for a specific volume of timber from a defined area, as well as responsibilities for long-term sustainable forest management. Term Supply Licence (TSL)A term supply licence (TSL) is a licence with a term of up to 10 years, granting rights to harvest specified forest volumes as well as responsibilities for forest management. A TSL may be volume-based or area-based. Forest Product Permit (FPP)A forest product permit grants the right to harvest specified forest products for a term of up to one year. This permit is also used to regulate other activities, such as grazing in the forest. Land use is classified into three categories: Commercial ForestAreas within the provincial forest that are available for commercial timber harvest allocation through the use of forest management agreements (FMA), volume-based or area-based term supply licences (TSL), or forest product permits (FPP). Fringe ForestAreas, generally south of the provincial forest, that contain “forest lands” — as defined by The Forest Resources Management Act. Within the fringe forest, harvest allocations are administered by the Ministry of Environment through the use of forest product permits and volume-based term supply licenses. Other UsesAreas within the provincial forest that are not available or suitable for forestry activities. These include protected areas and areas generally north of the commercial forest. For the entire Canwood, Nisbet, Fort a la Corne, Torch River, and Porcupine Provincial Forests, and the southern portion of the Northern Provincial Forest, boundaries follow the textual descriptions found in The Forest Resources Management Regulations, F-19.1 Reg 1, amended June 2020. Commercial forest and fringe forest areas are sub-divided into timber supply areas. Forest Names and Licence Holders are current as of August 31, 2020.
