The Indigenous Geographical Names dataset presents an extract from the Canadian Geographical Names Data Base (CGNDB) of geographical names with roots in Indigenous cultures. These geographical names reflect heritage, language, personal names, and cultural practices. Terrain and water features, populated places and culturally relevant places are geographical feature types present in the dataset. The Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC) is working to increase awareness of existing Indigenous place names and help promote the revitalization of Indigenous cultures and languages. Many more Indigenous place names exist in Canada, and this dataset will be constantly evolving as additional Indigenous place names are officially recognized and identified. This dataset is a collaborative project by Natural Resources Canada and the federal, provincial and territorial members of the Geographical Names Board of Canada, illustrating a curated selection of official geographical names in Canada that have changed over time. The selection comes from the Canadian Geographical Names Database, displaying additional information including the previous name(s) of each feature, the year and the reason why the names changed along with a short history of each name change.

This interactive map commemorates Canada’s participation in armed conflicts at home and abroad by highlighting a sample of the many geographical features and places named for those that served our country. These commemorative geographical names help us remember war casualties, soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen, military leaders, and civilians recognized or decorated for outstanding acts of bravery and sacrifice in battle. These names also commemorate notable battles in which Canada participated, and Canadian military units, regiments, squadrons, and ships in which Canadians served. Federal, provincial and territorial members of the Geographical Names Board of Canada provided these commemorative names for the development of the map. Many more commemorative place names exist in Canada, and will be added in future releases of this evergreen interactive map. The Canadian Geographical Names Data Base (CGNDB) is the authoritative national database of Canada's geographical names. The purpose of the CGNDB is to store place names and their attributes that have been approved by the Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC), the national coordinating body responsible for standards and policies on place names. The CGNDB is maintained by Natural Resources Canada, through the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation. The geographic extent of the CGNDB is the Canadian landmass and water bodies; the temporal extent is from 1897 to present. This dataset is extracted from the CGNDB on a weekly basis, and consists of current officially approved names, feature type, coordinates of the feature, decision date, source, and other attributes. The output file formats for this product are: text (CSV), Shape (SHP), and Keyhole Markup Language (KML).Content advisory: The Canadian Geographical Names Database contains historical terminology that is considered racist, offensive and derogatory. This dataset provides a geographical location (in decimal degrees to the nearest second) for all officially named geographical features within the Province of Manitoba.The purpose of this dataset is to provide a geographical location (in decimal degrees to the nearest second) for all officially named geographical features within the Province of Manitoba, as per the Manitoba Geographical Names Program. The program’s mission is to: “embrace the active preservation of the province’s culture through its toponymy, and provides a naming authority for the enhancement, maintenance, dissemination, and protection of Manitoba’s geographical nomenclature recognizing the integral role geographical names play in our daily lives including their essential value to our scientific, commercial, and economic world.”  As part of the program, staff administer and maintain all nomenclature records, an automated names information system, a resource library and archives, supplementary name location maps, a bibliography of name studies, and a commemorative names project. The Manitoba’s Geographical Names database contains more than 24, 000 official and heritage place names found throughout Manitoba. For each place name, the data set contains geographic coordinates, the type of feature, the name’s approval data, its location reference, plus any heritage information recorded about the name. Geographical Name (Geographical_Name): Current official name. Casualty Rank (Casualty_Rank): Rank of the casualty of war at the time of their death. Casualty Surname (Casualty_Surname): Surname of the casualty of war at the time of their death. Casualty Given Name(s) (Casualty_Given_Name_s_): Given name(s) of the casualty of war at the time of their death.  Casualty Date of Death (Casualty_Date_of_Death): Date of death for the casualty of war. Casualty Regiment (Casualty_Regiment): Military affiliation of the casualty of war at the time of their death. Casualty Place of Burial (Casualty_Place_of_Burial): Place of burial of the casualty when the geographical feature is named in honour of a casualty of war. The toponymic features of the CanVec series include proper nouns designating places and representations of the territory. This data come from provincial, territorial and Canadian toponymic databases. They are used in the CanVec Series for cartographic reference purposes and vary according to the scale of display. The toponymic features of the CanVec series can differ from the Canada's official geographical names.The CanVec multiscale series is available as prepackaged downloadable files and by user-defined extent via a Geospatial data extraction tool.
