Hydrocarbon resource assessment of Nares Strait and central Ellesmere Island, Nunavut
GIS compilation of data used to perform the stacked cumulative chance of success (resource potential map) in Open file 9163. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has been tasked, under the Marine Conservation Targets (MCT) initiative announced in Budget 2016, with evaluating the petroleum resource potential for areas identified for possible protection as part of the Government of Canada's commitment to conserve 10% of its marine areas by 2020. As part of this initiative, NRCan's Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) conducted a broad regional study of the petroleum potential over the majority of the Magdalen Basin, which is the principal geological basin in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. The GSC resource assessment is visually represented by a qualitative petroleum potential map. Disclaimer: A simplified colored version of the map is displayed on the Web Mapping Service (WMS). The correct version is available for download through the Federal Geospatial Platform (FGP) and GEOSCAN.
Updated Species Distribution Models for Marine Invasive Species Hotspot Identification
Monitoring data from DFO invasive species monitoring programs, along with occurrence information from online databases and the scientific literature, have been paired with high resolution environmental data and oceanographic models in species distribution models that predict present-day and project future distributions of 24 non-indigenous species (NIS) on North America`s east coast, and 31 NIS on its west coast. Future distributions were predicted for 2100, under Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s fifth Assessment Report. Present-day and future richness of these species (i.e., hotspots) have been estimated by summing the occurrence probabilities of NIS. This data set includes the present-day and year 2100 species distribution modeling results for each species, and the estimated species richness.Cite this data as: Lyons DA., Lowen JB, Therriault TW., Brickman D., Guo L., Moore AM., Peña MA., Wang Z., DiBacco C. Data of eelgrass (Zostera marina) traits from the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia
This dataset includes metrics of eelgrass traits related to bed structure, morphology, and physiology from field sites along the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, Canada. Field sites were located across a gradient of temperature and light conditions. Sampling was conducted in July to August, in 2017, 2021, and 2022. Seagrass density and plants were sampled at 10 haphazardly distributed sampling stations within each seagrass bed at approximately the same depth. Stations were ~10m apart and at least 2m from any seagrass-bare interface. Quadrats were used to determine vegetative and reproductive shoot density. Three plants from each sampling station were collected and processed in the laboratory for length and width leaf 3, number leaves per shoot, rhizome width, rhizome water soluble carbohydrates, and total leaf chlorophyll. Also included in this data temperature and light metric that summarize temperature and light conditions during the summer period.Cite this data as: Wong, M.C., Dowd, M. Benthic Marine Ecounits - Coastal Resource Information Management System (CRIMS)
Benthic Marine Ecounits in coastal and offshore British Columbia. Benthic ecounits are intended to describe the sea bed and nearshore. Seven variables were selected to derive benthic ecounits: 1. Depth; 2. Slope; 3. Relief; 4. Temperature; 5. Exposure; 6. Current and 7. Substrate. CRIMS is a legacy dataset of BC coastal resource data that was acquired in a systematic and synoptic manner from 1979 and was intermittently updated throughout the years. Resource information was collected in nine study areas using a peer-reviewed provincial Resource Information Standards Committee consisting of DFO Fishery Officers, First Nations, and other subject matter experts. There are currently no plans to update this legacy data.
Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence Ecosystem Research Vessel Survey (September Survey, NAFO Division 4T) Dataset
PURPOSE:The research survey provides a fisheries-independent source of information about all marine living organisms that are captured by the fishing trawl used to obtain samples in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.DESCRIPTION:Tow, catch, length frequency, and biological information for fish caught during the annual September research vessel trawl surveys in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (NAFO Division 4T). Abundance indices and spatial distribution patterns of commercial and non-commercial groundfish. The catch data that appear in this dataset SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR ECOLOGICAL ANALYSES INVOLVING CATCH RATES. Important factors such as vessel, fishing gear and diurnal periods must be accounted for to use these data in analyses. Please contact the data custodians if you are interested in using this data for any kind of ecological analyses involving catch rates. PARAMETERS COLLECTED:Abundance estimates (ecological); distribution (ecological); species counts (ecological); gear (fishing); vessel information (fishing); point (spatial)NOTES ON QUALITY CONTROL:Scientific names listed in the survey species list have been mapped to recognized standards - marine taxa have been mapped to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) using their online taxon match tool. All sampling locations were plotted on a map to perform a visual check confirming that the latitude and longitude coordinates were within the described sampling area.In 2003, because of a fire aboard the Alfred Needler, the Wilfred Templeman was used for the survey. However, no comparative fishing experiments have been conducted between the Alfred Needler and the Wilfred Templeman. We are therefore unable to integrate the indices derived for 2003 to the remainder of the survey time-series.SAMPLING METHODS:Sampling Method: Consult the "Protocols for research vessel cruises within the Gulf Region (dermersal fish) (1970-1980)" report, link provided in the citations list.USE LIMITATION:To ensure scientific integrity and appropriate use of the data, we would encourage you to contact the data custodian.
Biological and chemical marine discrete data - Gulf of St. Lawrence and the St. Lawrence Estuary
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) holds discrete oceanographic, biological, and chemical data collected throughout the St. Lawrence Estuary, the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and the Saguenay Fjord, as well as data gathered outside of these zones during non-routine surveys (collected by the Quebec region). These data come from samples taken at different depths in the water column (surface, bottom, and intermediate depths), mainly during annual scientific missions such as:- weekly monitoring at fixed stations (Rimouski, Shediac Valley)- annual multispecies surveys (Northern and Southern Gulf)- spring and fall missions of the Atlantic Zone Monitoring ProgramThis dataset presents the variables most frequently sampled for the period 1990 to two years prior to the present, namely, salinity, dissolved oxygen concentration, chlorophyll-a concentration, nutrient concentrations (nitrite, nitrate, silicate, phosphate), pH and alkalinity. These measurements are often accompanied by data from CTD profiles (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth/Pressure) and auxiliary sensors (fluorescence, turbidity, pH).Annual synthesis of the chemical and biological oceanographic conditions of the study area have been published since 2011, and reports on zonal conditions of the four Atlantic regions of DFO are also available for certain years: https://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/science/data-donnees/azmp-pmza/index-eng.htmlThis record is updated annually as new data become available. To obtain access to earlier data, less frequently sampled variables, or specifications regarding laboratory analyses (analytical methods, preservation, and storage), please contact the data management team at: gddaiss-dmsaisb@dfo-mpo.gc.ca.Notes: This publication contains data extracted from the national BioChem database (Biological and Chemical Marine Data: DFO.BioChemDatabase-BasededonneesBioChem.MPO@DFO-MPO.GC.CA). When replicate samples were present, the values were averaged, and values were grouped by variable regardless of the analysis method, preservation method, or storage method. The grouping of variables collected at the same station is based on spatial and temporal metadata: LATITUDE, LONGITUDE, DATE, and TIME.
