Great Bear Lake (Sahtú) Surface water temperature monitoring: 2021 to 2024
PURPOSE:This study is part of a two-decade series of research aimed to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the effects of harvest and environmental change on fisheries in Great Bear Lake. The main objectives are to assess demographic traits and the current status of harvested species, with a focus on evaluating sustainable harvest levels of lake trout, a cold-adapted species with a relatively narrow thermal niche. As part of this research, trends in water quality and primary productivity are monitored to evaluate potential effects of change on fisheries. DESCRIPTION:Great Bear Lake, one of the largest lakes in North America, contains culturally and recreationally important fish species. Great Bear Lake is located in the sub-Arctic and Arctic Circle. As part of a two-decade series of research aimed to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the effects of harvest and environmental change on fisheries in Great Bear Lake, the main objectives of this study are to assess demographic traits and the current status of harvested species, with a focus on evaluating sustainable harvest levels of lake trout, a cold-adapted species with a relatively narrow thermal niche. As part of this research, trends in water quality and primary productivity are monitored to evaluate potential effects of change on fisheries. From 2021 to 2024, surface water temperature data was collected at depths of 0.1 to 1.0 meters using an RBR Maestro3 through partnered community-led and community/Fisheries and Oceans Canada/university partner collaborative sampling. The project has strong community involvement, including youth through the Guardian Program, to facilitate capacity building and community leadership in the long-term monitoring of Great Bear Lake fisheries and the aquatic ecosystem. This data is an extension of baseline data sets on water quality on the lake. These data will contribute to a better understanding cumulative impacts of climate change on the functioning of large northern lake ecosystems and provide a benchmark for monitoring further change. This data will be important for developing effective strategies for maintaining community-led aquatic monitoring and managing natural resources, particularly fish, which are expected to be increasingly important to communities with declines in other country foods such as caribou.We acknowledge the data were collected in the Sahtú Settlement Area and are made publicly available with the agreement of the Délı̨nę Renewable Resources Council (Délı̨nę Ɂehdzo Got’ı̨nę (Renewable Resources Council)). Collaborators include: the Community of Délı̨nę partners (data collection), Délı̨nę Renewable Resource Council, Sahtú Renewable Resource Board, and University of Manitoba. Community of Délı̨nę partners and field workers that participated in data collection include Chris Yukon, Archie Vital, Ted Mackienzo, Daniel Baton, Lloyd Baton, Simon Neyelle, and Stanley Ferdanan.Funding and logistical support was provided by: Northwest Territories Cumulative Impact Monitoring, Sahtú Renewable Resource Board, the Polar Continental Shelf Program and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Bay Scale Assessment of Nearshore Habitat - Bras d'Or Lake - Eskasoni 2007 data is part of the publication Bay Scale Assessment of Nearshore Habitat Bras d'Or Lakes. A history of nearshore benthic surveys of Bras d’Or Lake from 2005 – 2011 is presented. Early work utilized drop camera and fixed mount sidescan. The next phase was one of towfish development, where camera and sidescan were placed on one platform with transponder-based positioning. From 2009 to 2011 the new towfish was used to ground truth an echosounder. The surveys were performed primarily in the northern half of the lake; from 10 m depth right into the shallows at less than 1 m. Different shorelines could be distinguished from others based upon the relative proportions of substrate types and macrophyte canopy. The vast majority of macrophytes occurred within the first 3 m of depth. This zone was dominated by a thin but consistent cover of eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) on almost all shores with a current or wave regime conducive to the growth of this plant. However, the eelgrass beds were frequently in poor shape and the negative impacts of commonly occurring water column turbidity, siltation, or possible localized eutrophication, are suspected. All survey data were placed into a Geographic Information System, and this document is a guide to that package. The Geographic Information System could be used to answer management questions such as the placement and character of habitat compensation projects, the selection of nearshore protected areas or as a baseline to determine long term changes.Vandermeulen, H. 2016. Static-Water-Level Elevation Contours in the Grand Centre, Sand River, Ethel Lake and Muriel Lake Formations, and Empress Formation Unit 1 and 3 in the Cold Lake-Beaver River Drainage Basin (GIS data, line feature)
Alberta Geological Survey partnered with Alberta Environment (AENV) Northern Region to compile and analyze groundwater data in the Cold Lake-Beaver River Drainage Basin. This compilation and analysis assisted AENV and its stakeholders to complete an update of the Beaver River-Cold Lake Water Management Plan. This digital file provides the contours of the hydraulic-head distributions for the Grand Centre, Sand River, Ethel Lake and the Muriel Lake formations, and the Empress Formation Units 1 and 3 based on reported static-water levels from water wells within the study area.

Manitoba Waterbody Data
This point feature layer contains both general and detailed information on waterbodies in Manitoba which are associated with the Lake Information for Anglers program.The point data contained within this layer represent the centroids of waterbodies in Manitoba. The layer describes a number of different attributes about a waterbody including, where available: average depth, aquatic invasive species information, regulatory links, presence of contours, waterbody specific PDF, fish assessment information, species information and coordinates. The waterbody data layer, along with related information, can be found at the Manitoba Lake Information For Anglers app. The project was initiated by Manitoba Wildlife and Fisheries Branch with funding from the Fish and Wildlife Enhancement Fund. Data is provided by Manitoba Wildlife and Fisheries Branch, Swan Valley Sport Fishing and Manitoba Watershed Districts. For additional information visit Manitoba Fisheries. The dataset includes the following fields (Alias (Name): Description) Waterbody ID (WATERBODY_ID): Unique identifier for an individual waterbody. Waterbody Name (WATERBODY_NAME): Name of the waterbody. Surface Area (km2) (SURFACE_AREA): Surface area of the waterbody in square kilometres. Average Depth (m) (AVERAGE_DEPTH_M): Average depth of a waterbody, if bathymetric data is available. Secchi (SECCHI): Indicates whether data exists for secchi depth in the waterbody (YES/NO). Secchi Depth (m) (SECCHI_DEPTH): Depth in meters of the visibility of a secchi disk. Fishing Division (FISHING_DIVISION): Indicates which fishing division the waterbody centroid is within. Fishing Division Special Area (SPECIAL_AREA): Indicates if the waterbody is within the special walleye areas (A or B). Please refer to the Angling Guide for details. UTM Zone (ZONE): Indicates which UTM zone the waterbody is in. Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS): Indicates the known or unknown presence of aquatic invasive species. Aquatic Invasive Species Control Zone (AIS_CONTROL_ZONE): Indicates which aquatic invasive species control zone a waterbody is within. High Quality Management (HIGH_QUALITY_MANAGEMENT): Indicates whether the waterbody falls under the high quality management angling regulations in Manitoba (TRUE/FALSE). HQM Description (HQM_DESCRIPTION): Indicates the high quality management provisions based on the fishing division the waterbody is in (only applies if the waterbody is a High Quality Management waterbody). Angling Regulations (SPECIAL_REGS): A note to see Manitoba Anglers’ Guide. Anglers' Guide (ANGLING_GUIDE): Contains a link (URL) to the Manitoba Anglers’ Guide. Waterbody Link (PRINTABLE_MAP): Contains a link to a PDF of waterbody contours and lake specific information for waterbodies that have bathymetric data. Boat Launch (BOAT_LAUNCH): Indicates whether the waterbody has a known boat launch (YES/NO). Launch Photo (LAUNCH_PHOTO): Indicates whether there is a launch photo for the waterbody (YES/NO). Boat Launch Photo (BOAT_LAUNCH_PHOTO): Contains a link (URL) that directs users to a photo of the launch. Stocked (STOCKED): Indicates whether the lake has been stocked with fish in the past (TRUE/FALSE). Species (SPECIES): A list of gamefish species that are known to have existed in the waterbody historically. Currently contains no info. Assessment (ASSESSMENT): Indicates whether an assessment PDF is available for the waterbody (YES/NO). Fisheries Assessment Link (FISHERIES_ASSESSMENT_LINK): Contains a link that directs users to a PDF document that contains information about species, fish age demographics, and master angler records. Contours (CONTOURS): Indicates whether contour data exists for the waterbody (YES/NO). Lat (DD) (LAT_DD): Latitudinal coordinates of the representative centroid of the waterbody in decimal degrees. Long (DD) (LONG_DD): Longitudinal coordinates of the representative centroid of the waterbody in decimal degrees.
