Digitization of long-term water chemistry data collected between 1920's - 1990's from lakes across Saskatchewan by the Saskatchewan Fisheries Research Laboratory. Samples were collected using methods from the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater (APHA, AWWA and WPCF). This data serves as a baseline for water quality.This dataset is a digitization from paper records of water chemistry data across Saskatchewan collected by the Saskatchewan Fisheries Research Laboratory. Data ranges from the 1920's to the 1990's and were sampled using methodes from the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater (American Public Health Association, American Water Works Association and Water Pollution Control Facility) This long-term water chemistry data serves as a baseline for water quality. Different variables of water chemistry are organized into individual fields. The units of measurement appear at the end of each field name. A shapefile of freshwater water bodies hat have been sampled as part of the Nova Scotia Lake Survey. The Nova Scotia Lake Survey program is a partnership initiative between Nova Scotia Environment (NSE) and Nova Scotia Fisheries and Aquaculture (NSDFA) to inventory lakes throughout the province determining baseline water quality, in support of both sport fisheries and water resource management areas. Timing windows and terms and conditions vary based on regional differences in fish and wildlife species and habitat, and geography. The timing window of least risk to fish and fish habitat must be applied to all activities in water bodies, as well as tributaries that have a risk of depositing sediment into water bodies. Windows of least risk are designed to protect all fish species known to occur in a water body.

This program summarizes long term water chemistry and chlorophyll a monitoring in north central Ontario lakes developed under Canada’s Long Range Transport of Air Pollutants (LRTAP) initiative to understand and track lake acidification caused by atmospheric deposition. Centered on the intensively studied Turkey Lakes Watershed since 1979 and complemented by broader headwater and mesoscale lake networks around Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, as well as a few locations near Parry Sound, Ontario, the monitoring integrates catchment scale approaches to link atmospheric inputs, watershed processes, and aquatic responses. Water chemistry measurements quantify acid–base status, major ions, nutrients, and trace metals to diagnose sensitivity to acidification, episodic stress during events such as spring snowmelt, and long term chemical recovery following emission controls. Chlorophyll a is used alongside chemistry to indicate phytoplankton biomass, lake productivity, and overall water quality, providing biological context for fish habitat and ecosystem condition. Together, these coordinated datasets support both detailed process studies and regional assessments of lake sensitivity, productivity, and ecological recovery across a heterogeneous landscape.

Water quality and ecosystem health data used to conduct a cumulative effects assessment of Canadian Great Lakes nearshore waters in support of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement are included in this dataset. The data was collected by various government and non-government agencies and organizations and integrated into this dataset to allow the assessment to be conducted. By conducting a regular, systematic assessment of cumulative effects in the nearshore waters of the Great Lakes Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is able to identify areas of high quality and areas under stress. Knowledge of ecological thresholds, other Great Lakes assessments, stressor information, indicators and local and traditional ecological knowledge will be used to aid in: 1) the identification and mapping of high quality nearshore areas and areas that are or may become subject to high stress and; 2) the determination of factors and cumulative effects that are causing stress or threats. Cumulative effects impacting the nearshore and future threats to areas of high ecological value will be better understood and the knowledge shared will assist in priority setting for science and management at a meaningful and practical spatial scale within each Great Lake and connecting channel.

This data set includes information on sampling locations, water chemistry and chlorophyll collected at 18 locations in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River and 4 locations in Lake Simcoe.
