The Fire Control Zone dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent Fire Control Zones in Alberta. Fire Control Zone is legislated to show geographical areas established for the purposes of closure orders and fire control orders under the Alberta Forest and Prairie Protection Act.

The Native Prairie Vegetation Inventory (NPVI) Polygons is a quarter section-based vegetation inventory that covers the southern part of Alberta. The native prairie is defined in the Native Prairie Conservation Action Plan as an area of unbroken grassland or parkland dominated by non-introduced species, and an area of previously broken grassland that has reverted back to natural vegetation (30 to 60 years). The Native Prairie Vegetation Inventory extends beyond the Grasslands Natural Region to include data for adjacent areas, such as the Cypress Hills. In addition to the Grassland Natural Region, the Native Prairie Vegetation Inventory (NPVI) Polygons include areas that belong to the Foothills Parkland, Central Parkland, Montane, Dry Mixedwood Boreal and Lower Foothills Natural Subregions.

The Prairie Soil Zones file shows the general distribution of major soil zones across the Prairie region of Canada. Soil zones (based on the Canadian System of Soil Classification) are named based on the dominant soil classification of the soils in each zone. Data extent is limited to the Agricultural Zone as defined in Soil Landscapes of Canada v 3.0 (Lefebvre et al. 2005).

This dataset defines the ecological areas of Alberta known as the Natural Regions and Natural Subregions, as defined in 2004/2005. This dataset is intended to allow for the stratification of the province of Alberta based on ecological criteria. Natural Regions are the largest mapped ecological units in Alberta's classification system. They are defined geographically on the basis of landscape patterns, notably vegetation, soils and physiographic features. Natural Subregions are subdivisions of a Natural Region, generally characterized by vegetation, climate, elevation, and latitudinal or physiographic differences within a given Region.The intended scale of use of this product is 1:250 000. This version is 2005 Final. Linework changes from the previous Natural Subregion delineation are due both to better information and refined subregion definitions. Note that the Athabasca Plain subregion has been moved into the Boreal Natural Region and that the Boreal Highlands has now been split into Lower and Upper. This GIS dataset is a GIS version of Alberta Geological Survey Map 139, polygon features, as mapped at 1:250,000 scale. Digitizing was originally done by Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA). The data were supplied to Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) by PFRA in Arc/Info coverage format (map polygon features only). Data were subsequently checked and edited by AGS.

Historical Grassland and Current Grassland = Grassland Benchmark

This is a dataset of forest harvest areas for the Upper North Saskatchewan and Upper Red Deer River Basins of Alberta. This dataset was created to support spatial analyses of forest harvest areas in the Upper North Saskatchewan and Upper Red Deer River Basins for the Alberta Environment and Parks report entitled “Ecological response to land use and human activities in the eastern slopes of Alberta's Rocky Mountains: A scientific assessment”. This is a polygon dataset covering the Upper North Saskatchewan and upper Red Deer River Basins of Alberta, Canada for the period 1961-2016. This dataset of forest harvest areas was created using three data sources obtained from Alberta Agriculture and Forestry: The AVI (Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, 2017a), the Post Inventory Final Cutblocks layer (Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, 2017b), and Regional Forestry Cultblock data (obtained directly from Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, March 2018).
