Salmon Rivers Presence, Maritimes Region
The names of these rivers in the Bay of Fundy and Port Hawkesbury Area Response Plan (ARP) regions were obtained from Recovery Potential Assessments (see references), and cross referenced with the Atlas of Canada hosted online by Natural Resources Canada. These rivers were then identified and marked in ArcGIS using the Nova Scotia and New Brunswick Hydrographic Networks. Point features were used to represent the river mouths. For rivers large enough to be represented by polygon features, the point was placed where the polygon closed the inlet. For smaller rivers represented by a polyline, the point was placed where the line intersected the coastline. When multiple tributaries of a river were identified as salmon rivers, only the most seaward was marked.Cite this data as: Corrigan, S. Data of: Salmon Rivers Presence, Maritimes Region. Salmon Rivers Geodatabase - by DFO Detachment (NL Region)
This dataset was developed to provide a complete record of salmon rivers within the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is organized by DFO detachment area and can be used for resource planning and management purposes. It is suitable for general mapping, visualization and query. It is derived from the National Hydro Network (NHN) data.The geodatabase contains feature datasets for each of the 8 DFO detachments in Newfoundland and Labrador (Bay Roberts, Clarenville, Goose Bay, Marystown, Rocky Harbour, Springdale, Stephenville, Twillingate). Each of the feature datasets contain 4 feature classes that describe aspects of the salmon rivers within each detachment area. The RiverBasins feature class contains polygons outlining the extent of each of the salmon river watersheds that fall within that DFO detachment area. Polygons were delineated using provincial DEMs, National Hydro Network (NHN) river features, the DFO detachment area boundary, and tools contained in the ArcHydro toolset for ArcPro GIS software. The SalmonNetwork feature class contains lines which show the flow (undirected) of the river network through each of the salmon river watersheds that fall within that DFO detachment area. The flow is depicted by lines that run through rivers and streams and through waterbodies. The lines were imported from the National Hydro Network (Primary Directed Flow feature class) and then organized by salmon river watershed, to create a dataset with one line feature for each watershed. The SalmonRivers feature class contains lines which show salmon rivers within each of the salmon river watersheds that fall within that DFO detachment area. The lines were imported from the National Hydro Network (SLWater feature class) and then organized by salmon river watershed, to create a dataset with one line feature for each watershed. Only "single-line" rivers are included. Larger, "two-sided" rivers are depicted as polygons in the "Salmon Waterbodies" dataset.This SalmonWaterbodies feature class contains polygons which show salmon waterbodies within each of the salmon river watersheds that fall within that DFO detachment area. The polygons were imported from the National Hydro Network (Waterbody feature class) and then organized by salmon river watershed, to create a dataset with one polygon feature for each watershed. Larger, "two-sided" rivers are also depicted as polygons in the "Salmon Waterbodies" dataset.The geodatabase contains attribute information on the name, zone and class of each salmon river as reflected in the following documents: (i) Anglers' Guide - Scheduled Salmon Rivers of Newfoundland and Labrador and (ii) Conservation and Protection - Scheduled Salmon Rivers & DFO Detachment Regions Newfoundland and Labrador. Hydrokinetic Resource Mapping - Optical Satellite Imagery Analysis of Open Water Regions in Ice-Covered Canadian Rivers
Building on the initial effort (“Database of Open Water Areas in River Ice for Provinces of Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes - Potential Locations For River Hydrokinetic Energy Extraction Identified Through Optical Satellite Imager”; weblink: https://search.open.canada.ca/openmap/d9823004-29aa-40e2-aa47-9c54cf88c309), a follow-up research project has led to the publication of this extensive analysis encompassing the entirety of Canada’s major freezing rivers. This work has applied advanced image processing and classification algorithms to the selected images, elevating the classification and analysis to a higher level of accuracy and providing a more comprehensive dataset for exploring river hydrokinetic energy prospects across the country.This dataset identifies open water areas within ice-covered major Canadian rivers, aiming to evaluate potential hydrokinetic resources. The data is derived from high-resolution optical satellite imagery obtained from Landsat and Sentinel satellites corresponding to National Research Council (NRC) 2014 flow data of river reaches with water depths of at least 10 meters and a flow velocity of a minimum of 0.5 meters per second. Using advanced image processing and machine learning algorithms, the dataset efficiently differentiates between ice-covered and open water regions, providing a reliable basis for assessing hydrokinetic energy potential in the identified areas.Disclaimer:This dataset is subject to the following limitations:• Landsat and Sentinel optical satellite images are high-resolution, but they may contain resolution errors, possible distortions, and inaccuracies in depicting on-ground conditions. • Despite advanced image processing and machine learning algorithms, errors or biases may exist. • The dataset's reliability is also influenced by the NRC flow data.Therefore, users should view this dataset as a preliminary assessment tool, not a definitive guide for decision-making or investment in hydrokinetic projects. Electrofishing Data from Nova Scotian Rivers (SFA 18A, 18B)
PURPOSE:To track juvenile Atlantic salmon densities.DESCRIPTION:Indices of freshwater production are derived annually from electrofishing surveys in the rivers of Nova Scotia flowing into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Fixed site sampling for juvenile salmon has been conducted most consistently since the mid-1980s for these rivers. Juvenile salmon abundances at sites, in terms of number of fish per habitat area sampled by age or size group (densities), are obtained using successive removal sampling or catch per unit effort sampling calibrated to densities.
