Canadian National Fire Behaviour Prediction (FBP) Fuel Type (FT) Layer - Current Year
A National Forest Fire Behaviour Prediction (FBP) Fuel Type (FT) layer, representing fuel types as described in the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System (CFFDRS) Canada-wide. This data is developed through the Spatialized Canadian National Forest Inventory (SCANFI) dataset, specifically the updated SCANFI version 2.0. The Fuel Type layer is produced at variable resolution to best meet the needs of users: 30m (default) and 100m (ideal for fire growth modelling). The purpose of this dataset is to characterize Canadian forests into Fuel Types for use in various applications, including wildland fire management, research, fuel management, and more. This layer is primarily developed to support national scale applications and uses but can be utilized for localized landbases and adapted as required. This data represents the most up-to-date national product and is updated annually prior to the start of the fire season to incorporate burned area and additional data from the previous year. This data will be updated annually and published online by April 30th of each year.Note: In this product Slash fuel types (S-1, S-2, and S-3) are not represented. Conifer Plantation (C-6) is not represented. Raster Grid Value 13 represents vegetated fuels without an effective match to an existing FBP Fuel Type under this ruleset. Grid Value 11 (corresponding to D-1 Leafless Aspen) is assumed to represent true Deciduous fuels as described in the FBP system.
Beluga Relative Summer Density in the St. Lawrence Estuary
This layer represents the relative summer density of belugas in the St. Lawrence Estuary based on 35 aerial surveys carried out from 1990 to 2009. The boundaries of the areas were determined by combining the highest densities until the desired proportion of the population was obtained using kernel density estimation in order to obtain a smooth and continuous density distribution.Within Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the ecosystem approach is considered a tool for operational planning, project implementation and preparation of advisory reports. In response to this strategic direction, the DFO science division is committed to implement the ecosystem approach in its activities as Ecosystem Research Initiatives (ERI) in each of the six administrative regions of DFO. In the Quebec region, two pilot projects were implemented, of which one aimed to define and characterize the habitat of the St. Lawrence beluga (Delphinapterus leucas).Data sources and references:DFO. 2016. Survey for Physella wrighti - the hotwater physa, at Liard River Hotsprings Provincial Park, August 2006
Survey for Physella wright - the hotwater physa, at Liard River Hotsprings Provincial Park, August 2006.Description of activity:The research is a survey of the Hotwater physa, Physella wrighti, to estimate population distribution and abundance, in order to monitor the population of this freshwater snail found in a single hot spring site in Canada. Researchers will gather data regarding the density of snail populations and the characteristics of the habitat it utilizes in order to provide an updated assessment of its status. The proposed methodology allows accurate, monitoring of this population. Estimates of snail density per square meter will be calculated based on repeated sweeps of vegetation to dislodge snails. Where snails are found on open substrate, counts are done by quadrat. Attempts will be made to document egg case deposition.Population density estimates and ecosystem data will be sampled for every meter of stream where P. wrighti is known to occur. Each sample site will be georeferenced and documented using digital photography.
Lumpfish potential spawning site in the Gulf of St. Lawrence
Identification of a potential spawning site for lumpfish during an ichtyofauna inventory conducted in the eelgrass in Sept-Îles bay by Calderón (1996).Purpose:The 1996 document by par Isabel Calderón has been achieved by the "Corporation de protection de l'environnement de Sept-Îles" with the support of Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) as part of the "Biodiversity" program, St. Lawrence Vision 2000 (Canada).Source:Calderón, I. 1996. Know concentration areas of the Softshell clam in the intertidal zone of the Estuary and the Gulf of St. Lawrence
The dataset represents known concentration areas of harvested or unharvested Softshell clam (Mya arenaria) in the intertidal zone of the Estuary and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Quebec region. The dataset was created for the National environmental emergencies centre (NEEC) for preparation and response in case of an oil spill. Concentration areas were defined using Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) inventories conducted between 2000 and 2020.This layer is dependent on the inventories carried out and thus only represents known clam areas. For example, for the Haute-Côte-Nord, inventories have been limited to areas open to harvesting (with the exception of 4 sectors), but it is known that the Softshell clam is also present outside these areas. In addition, little information was available for the Moyenne and Basse-Côte-Nord.This data layer does not represent the general distribution of the species nor the extent to which fishing is allowed. The extent of shellfish beds may vary over time in response to, among others harvesting and the recruitment rates. The boundaries of polygons from inventory data may be underestimated relative to the actual size of the deposit since the inventories were conducted at the location where the resource is most abundant, without necessarily sampling the entire bed. However, the accuracy is sufficient for the protection and management needs of the resource in the event of an environmental incident. Data sources and references:Brulotte, S. 2011. General distribution of humpback whales in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence
General distribution of Humpback Whales in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence based on all identified whales from the entire MICS database (Mingan Island Cetacean Study).Additional informationThe MICS (Mingan Island Cetacean Study) has been collecting and compiling in a photo-identification catalogue, blue whale (and other type of whales) sightings for the western North Atlantic since 1979. Since 1987, the material and sampling protocol has been being relatively stable, neither random nor systematic. Field work is conducted abord inflatable boats. Because the whole Gulf ot St. Lawrence cannot be thoroughly studied, MCIS conducts surveys in known whale aggregation areas. The spatial effort is also weather dependent and is mainly constrained by wind direction and strength. Therefore, the study area is not homogeneously covered. Each whale observation is associated with a picture that allows individual identification based on the animal's pigmentation pattern. Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System (CFFDRS) Fire Behaviour Prediction (FBP) Fuel Types 2024, 30 M
A national map of Canadian Fire Behaviour Prediction (FBP) Fuel Types (FT) developed from public data sources. The resolution of the raster grid is 30m, classified from the Spatialized Canadian National Forest Inventory (SCANFI) dataset, ecozones of Canada, and the National Burned Area Composite (NBAC). The purpose of the dataset is to characterize Canadian forests into fuel types for use in Fire Behaviour Prediction calculations as well as for situational awareness of national fire potential.
