Metis Settlement
The Metis Settlement is a dataset comprised of all the polygons that represent Metis Settlements lands in Alberta. Metis Settlements are lands set apart by provincial legislation for the use and benefit of the members of the eight Metis Settlements in Alberta. The legal title of these lands rests with the Metis Settlements General Council, a legislated-body that holds the fee simple interest on all Metis settlement lands, equivalent to full ownership of the land, with certain limited rights reserved for the Crown. The provincial government has primary jurisdiction over these lands and the people living on them.
Maritimes Coastal Biodiversity Monitoring Program – Beach Seining
Monitoring programs are an important component of Marine Protected Area (MPA) management, providing requisite information on the state of, and changes in, protected ecosystems. Monitoring is required to gauge the efficacy of MPAs towards their conservation objectives and provides information needed to evaluate the benefits provided to biodiversity from restricted access. However, in Nova Scotia’s coastal zone, there is a lack of baseline data, including fish diversity and community structure in macrophyte beds, which makes monitoring intractable. In 2017, the Eastern Shore Islands was identified as a coastal Area of Interest (AOI) for the potential establishment of an MPA. In 2018 an overview was conducted, detailing the spatial and temporal ecological attributes of the AOI. This information revealed a unique coastal ecosystem associated with a dense archipelago and relatively natural seascape. The abundance of plant and algal biogenic habitats within the area was assumed to host a diversity of juvenile fish species. The primary objective of this project is to begin development of a long-term biodiversity monitoring program in the Eastern Shore Islands and other coastal Areas of Interest for conservation planning. We propose implementing this program with the use of direct (beach seines, scuba diving, and stable isotope sampling) and indirect (environmental DNA - eDNA) sampling. Environmental DNA (eDNA) is a useful tool to examine marine biodiversity in a non-invasive way, on a small spatial scale. eDNA can be easily collected and filtered and is becoming increasingly cost efficient to sequence and may be a useful marine protected area monitoring tool. While eDNA generally yields comparable results to traditional sampling techniques in terms of biodiversity captured, little is known on how eDNA signals fluctuate across years (or even days to weeks). We will compare species detections using eDNA metabarcoding to visual surveys (scuba and seine nets) to census eelgrass beds across the coastal zone, providing a baseline and time series of species diversity on which to base long-term monitoring. This project will generate inventories of eelgrass bed locations, and fish and invertebrate diversity within eelgrass beds. We additionally collect fish length distribution data to examine seasonal and inter-annual trends in size structure over time. The data generated from direct and indirect sampling will provide a comprehensive and ongoing catalog of species diversity and community structure in coastal eelgrass beds, as well as best-practices for sampling eDNA in the coastal environment.Cite this data as: Jeffery, N.W., Pettitt-Wade, H., Van Wyngaarden, M., and Stanley, R.R.E. Fish Species Caught in Miramichi, McKiel and Nashwaak Lakes
PURPOSE:To characterize food webs of lake fish communities using stable isotopes, gut content morphology and DNA.DESCRIPTION:Data sets containing fish species caught in Miramichi Lake, McKiel Lake and Nashwaak Lake. PARAMETERS COLLECTED:Species counts (ecological); points (spatial)USE LIMITATION:To ensure scientific integrity and appropriate use of the data, we would encourage you to contact the data custodian.
eDNA-based distribution assessment of Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus dolomieu) in the Miramich River Watershed from 2019 to 2024
PURPOSE:Scope the distribution of Smallmouth Bass in the Miramichi River Watershed using eDNADESCRIPTION:This dataset contains the results of work undertaken from 2019 to 2024 to scope the extent of the spread of Smallmouth Bass in parts of the Miramichi River Watershed using an eDNA-based species-specific qPCR approach.USE LIMITATION:To ensure scientific integrity and appropriate use of the data, we would encourage you to contact the data custodian.
Old Growth Management Areas - Legal - Current
This 'Current' spatial data layer is publicly viewable and downloadable, contains the most current Legal Old Growth Management Area (OGMA) polygons and excludes any sensitive information. This data represents legally established and spatially defined areas of old growth forest that are identified during landscape unit planning or an operational planning process. Forest licensees are required to maintain legally established OGMAs when preparing FSPs. OGMAs, in combination with other areas where forestry development is prevented or constrained, are used to achieve biodiversity targets. This spatial view will show the most current polygons and excludes sensitive information. This data is viewable in iMapBC by 2 layers: Legal Old Growth Management Areas - Current, Old Growth Management Areas - Legal. Please see the Additional Information and Object Description Comments below.
Active Commercial Shipping Anchorages in Pacific Canada
This is a point layer of the names and locations of the actively used commercial shipping anchorages in British Columbia. These point locations were manually compiled from available port guides and documents. The objective of this dataset is to provide a consolidated file containing all active commercial shipping anchorage locations as there has been a lack of consistency between different sources due to variations in names and locations in different datasets and historical changes to anchorage locations.
eDNA-based Detection of Freshwater Mussels in New Brunswick
PURPOSE:Assess the distribution of freshwater mussels, including the Brook Floater (Alasmidonta varicosa), the Eastern Pearlshell (Margaritifera margaritifera), and the Yellow Lampmussel (Lampsilis cariosa) in New Brunswick.DESCRIPTION:This dataset contains the results of work undertaken from 2017 to 2024 to assess the distribution of freshwater mussels using environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys and species-specific qPCR assays. USE LIMITATION:To ensure scientific integrity and appropriate use of the data, we would encourage you to contact the data custodian.
Margaree River and Tributaries Water Temperatures
PURPOSE:To record hourly water temperatures throughout the Margaree watershed.DESCRIPTION:The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has been deploying water temperature monitoring equipment since spring 1993 in the Margaree River watershed. Coverage has changed throughout the time series and there is little documentation regarding equipment used. In recent years data have been collected using VEMCOs. USE LIMITATION:To ensure scientific integrity and appropriate use of the data, we would encourage you to contact the data custodian.
Northern marine coastal and ecosystem studies in the Canadian Beaufort Sea—sampling information
The objective of this project was to gather data to develop a model of the food web of the lower trophic levels of the nearshore area of the Beaufort Sea. Sampling took place from 2005 to 2008 using the CCGS Nahidik. The multidisciplinary character of the Nahidik program produced measurements of biology/ecology (primary production, phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos, fish), chemical and physical oceanography, contaminants, geology and hydro acoustics. The data were collected in July and August of each year. The Nahidik program provided data to provide a baseline for future studies as well as an information source for environmental assessment.
Legal Planning Objectives - Current - Line
Spatially identified and mapped legal objective lines as determined from strategic land and resource planning processes in the province of British Columbia. Legal objectives can encompass objectives developed and grandfathered under now repealed Forest Practices Code legislation (including Higher level Plans), as well as new and existing objectives developed through the Land Use Objectives Regulation and the Land Act to support FRPA implementation. This layer contains line features. The Strategic Land and Resource Planning documents can be accessed [here](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/industry/crown-land-water/land-use-planning/regions). Current SLRP legal objective lines are included in this layer. For all SLRP legal objective points (retired and current), please see the layer [Legal Planning Objectives - All - Line](https://catalogue.data.gov.bc.ca/dataset/b648ac2d-6a9a-426c-9dcd-39ec188d7f36).
