The Elk Valley Area Based Management Plan (ABMP) - “Elk Valley Water Quality Plan” was developed according to Ministerial Order No. 113 to remediate water quality effects of past coal mining and to guide future development. The Elk Valley Water Quality Plan was developed by Teck with input from the public, First Nations, governments, technical experts and other stakeholders. The purpose of the Plan is to identify a strategy and implement solutions to address increasing selenium and nitrate water concentrations within the Valley, and assess and track levels of cadmium and sulphate in waters; while at the same time allowing for continued sustainable mining in the Valley. The Plan also lays out a strategy to address calcite formation associated with historical and current mining activity. The Plan was submitted to the British Columbia Minister of Environment for approval on July 22, 2014. The ministry amended the Elk Valley ABMP in 2025. The purpose of this feature class is to identify those areas that are in the process of Timber Harvest Planning, process being a continuum from proposed plan through to approval and eventually plan expiration. Subsection 20(3) of the Forest Resources Act establishes that an approved Timber Harvest Plan is required prior to the authorization of timber harvesting under a Harvesting Licence or authorization of a Forest Resources Permit for non-commercial timber harvesting in an amount greater than 25m3 per year. Base waterbody polygon arcs are feature type, source and capture date attributed arcs that make up the boundaries of base waterbody polygons in the Base Features Hydrography geospatial dataset. These arcs were collected from conversion processes of 1:20 000, 1:50 000 and AVI Provincial mapping datasets and 1:50 000 National Topographic Data Base (NTDB).
