Timing windows and terms and conditions vary based on regional differences in fish and wildlife species and habitat, and geography. The timing window of least risk to fish and fish habitat must be applied to all activities in water bodies, as well as tributaries that have a risk of depositing sediment into water bodies. Windows of least risk are designed to protect all fish species known to occur in a water body.
Speckled Dace Critical Habitat Survey Data
Speckled Dace (Rhinichthys osculus) are listed under the Species at Risk Act (SARA) as endangered. These fresh water fish, of the family Cyprinidae, are found in Canada only in the Kettle Valley of British Columbia. Proposed critical habitat was based on minimum viable population analysis and assumed densities of fish. From October 19th to the 22nd of 2015, night time pole seining surveys were conducted to enumerate Speckled Dace in proposed critical habitat on the West Kettle River; one of three rivers containing Speckled Dace. The estimated population abundance of Speckled Dace within the survey area was 8,978 (6,143-11,814), however only 1,014 of these are estimated to be adults.

PURPOSE:Assess the distribution of freshwater mussels, including the Brook Floater (Alasmidonta varicosa), the Eastern Pearlshell (Margaritifera margaritifera), and the Yellow Lampmussel (Lampsilis cariosa) in New Brunswick.DESCRIPTION:This dataset contains the results of work undertaken from 2017 to 2024 to assess the distribution of freshwater mussels using environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys and species-specific qPCR assays. Freshwater Fish Habitat Accessibility MODEL – Pacific Salmon and Steelhead
The Freshwater Fish Habitat Accessibility MODEL- Pacific Salmon and Steelhead predicts the potential extent of accessible freshwater habitat for Pacific Salmon species and Steelhead in BC. Using the BC Freshwater Atlas as the mapping base, the model presumes that in watershed groups where a given species is known to occur, the species can potentially access any stream that is either: - downstream of a known, validated fish observations for the given species OR - has no known barrier to fish passage downstream AND - has no segment steeper (for at least 100m) than the known swimming ability of the given species anywhere downstream This product is an ACCESSIBILITY MODEL only – it represents only the streams that Pacific Salmon and Steelhead could potentially use for migration, based on known/modelled barriers and the given species swimming ability. The model accounts only for natural barriers and connectivity – other essential characteristics for defining fish habitat are not included. For example, streams modelled as accessible may not have flow sufficient for supporting fish. As such, this model is not appropriate for use in operational applications. It is more appropriate for landscape level assessments and planning exercises. Site specific projects such as riparian buffer delineation require field assessment, stream measurements and fish sampling.
Provincial Fish Ranges - Generalized
This file contains a generalized representation of watersheds developed from the 1:50,000 BC Watershed Atlas with each region coded for occurrence of freshwater fish species (including anadromous salmon in their freshwater stages). The initial fish species codes for presence/absence in each watershed were derived from an GIS overlay of fish species occurrences within broadly defined fish regions for BC. This overlay of fish ranges describes the occurrences of fish species in 30 regions throughout the province. These broad species ranges were derived from McPhail and Carveth's 'Key to Freshwater Fish of BC' and refined further based on the most current expert opinion. Coding for watershed polygons based on this expert opinion was originally: 0= out of species range; 4 = core range; 5= introduced range; 6= peripheral range; 9= estuarine polygons only. A further refinement of watershed fish species coding was developed from actual observations of fish species in the lakes and rivers of British Columbia. This data comes from a number of fish inventory sources. Watersheds with known records of occurrence for each fish species were consequently recoded as such: 4, 5, 6, 9 now equal '1' if a museum record, and, 4, 5, 6, 9 now equal '2' for a less reliable record, and, 0 now equals '8'. for an out-of range record
Provincial Obstacles to Fish Passage
The Provincial Obstacles to Fish Passage theme presents records of all known obstacles to fish passage from several fisheries datasets. Records from the following datasets have been included: The Fisheries Information Summary System (FISS); the Fish Habitat Inventory and Information Program (FHIIP); the Field Data Information System (FDIS) and the Resource Analysis Branch (RAB) inventory studies. The main intent of this layer is to have a single layer of all known obstacles to fish passage. It is important to note that not all waterbodies have been studied and, not all lengths of many waterbodies have been studied so there are a very high number of obstacles in the real world that are not recorded in this dataset. This layer simply reports the obstacles to fish that are known. It is also very important to note that we are acknowledging these features as obstacles to fish passage versus barriers to fish passage. This is because an obstacle may be a barrier at one time of year but not at other times depending on the volume of water present and also, what is a barrier to one species of fish is not necessarily a barrier to another species.

National Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Risk Assessment for Zebra (Dreissena polymorpha) and Quagga (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) Mussels
Zebra Mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) and Quagga Mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) have a long history of invasion in European and North American freshwater ecosystems, with significant ecological and economic impacts. An ecological risk assessment for these two invasive species for freshwater ecosystems in Canada was completed in April 2022 with the aim to provide science-based guidance to inform management decisions and actions. These include early detection, response planning, and/or regulatory and policy measures aimed at mitigating the potential spread and risk posed by Zebra and Quagga Mussels to Canadian freshwater ecosystems (DFO 2023). The Potential for Introduction (propagule pressure and connectivity), the Potential for Establishment (habitat suitability, including a Calcium-based and Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt)-based model), the Potential for Invasion, and the Ecological Impacts were used to derive Ecological Risk for Zebra and Quagga Mussels in Canada. This assessment did not evaluate the risk to individual waterbodies but rather was conducted at a 9,260 m x 9,260 m grid cell resolution. These high resolution maps are provided here. Maps of Ecological Risk at the sub-drainage level are also provided.
