SummaryThe Quebec region of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is responsible for the assessment of several fish and invertebrate stocks exploited in the Estuary and the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence. The commercial catches sampling program is one of the sources of information used to complete these assessments. The data collected by this program, at wharf or at sea, offers among other things the advantage of a relatively large spatio-temporal coverage and provides some of the necessary knowledge to assess the demography and the structure of the exploited populations. This program is implemented by specialized DFO staff whose main mandate is to collect biological data on groundfish, pelagic fish and marine invertebrate species that are commercially exploited in the various marine communities.DataThis dataset on the winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) includes the metadata, sample weight, fish length, the sex and the number of specimens measured. This dataset covers the periods of 1992, 1997-2019. In order to protect the confidentiality of the sources, some informations (such as those concerning the vessel) have been excluded and others (such as the date of capture) have been simplified. Entries where there was only one vessel in a fishing area for a given year were also excluded. Demersal fish species abondance in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence
2014 to 2023 demersal fish abundance in the Estuary and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The abundance is expressed as a number of individuals per normalized trawl set. Each species is individually represented in the northern Gulf and in the southern Gulf. In the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, these bottom trawl surveys has been carrying out each September since 1971. American lobster (Homarus americanus) abundance and biological characteristics collected from SCUBA dive surveys in the Bay of Fundy from 1982-2021
This dataset reports on lobster abundance and individual biological characteristics (size, sex, shell hardness, egg status), along with seabed substrate information, collected at various coastal sites in the Bay of Fundy, Canada. Surveys were conducted over a 40-year period between 1982 and 2021. Survey areas and SCUBA dive sites were located around Grand Manan Island, Deer Island, Campobello Island, and along the Bay of Fundy’s New Brunswick shore stretching from Passamaquoddy Bay, east to Maces Bay. One survey area was located on the Bay of Fundy’s southern shore (Nova Scotia) in the Annapolis Basin (Lawton et al. 1995). The data represent a compilation of SCUBA diving surveys (1003 belt transects) conducted directly by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) scientific SCUBA divers (1982-2019), or by contracted commercial divers funded in association with outside collaborating organizations; Department of Fisheries and Agriculture (DFA; 1990 – 1993), the Grand Manan Fishermen’s Association (GMFA; 2013-2015), and the University of New Brunswick (UNB; 2019-2021).Cite this data as: Lawton P, Dinning K, Rochette R, Teed L. Traditional knowledge of nearshore fisheries for the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (1994-1997)
In 1998, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) published an atlas called "Traditional Fisheries Knowledge for the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence". The document is composed of a series of maps that contain useful information primarily on nearshore fisheries and fish habitat in the eastern shore of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and the Gulf Shore of Nova Scotia. It was used as a working tool to assist in the development of integrated coastal zone management plans, resource management plans, and more.Between 1994 and 1997, data collectors and fishery officers interviewed local fishers and industry representatives. The purpose of these interviews was primarily to gain information on local fishing activities and the location of fisheries' resources and their habitats. The data and information was vetted through a process of verification with scientists, fishers, locals, industry representatives, and government officials. Maps were then compiled for 14 commercially important fish species and made publicly available to consult. These include lobster, rock crab, scallop, snow crab, toad crab, herring, mackerel, American plaice, cod, witch flounder (grey sole), hake, halibut, winter flounder, and unspecified groundfish. This data resource also includes the other 27 species originally not included in the atlas.

Polyline feature layer of winter trails in Manitoba provincial parks.This feature layer contains polylines showing locations of winter trails in Manitoba provincial parks. Winter trails are those trails designated for certain winter activities, such as cross-country skiing, skijoring, skate-skiing, fat biking, and dog sledding. Most of these trails are groomed by Manitoba Parks staff throughout the season. This layer is used in the interactive map Manitoba Parks - Winter Activity Trails Map and the web app Manitoba Parks - Winter Trails and Recreation Areas. Multidisciplinary winter survey for assessing groundfish in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence (MV Gadus Atlantica 1978 - 1994)
Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) conducted a winter multidisciplinary scientific surveys with a bottom trawl the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence and Cabot Straight from 1978 to 1994. The specificities of the missions onboard the MV Lady Hammond are described below.Objectives:1. Assess groundfish populations abundance and condition2. Assess environmental conditions3. Conduct a biodiversity inventory of benthic and demersal megafauna4. Collect samples for various research projectsSurvey descriptionThis winter survey covers the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence, that is the divisions 4R, 4S and 3Pn of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO). A stratified random sampling strategy is used for this survey and the fishing gear used on the MV Gadus Atlantica is an Engel 145 Otter trawl. Standard trawling tows last 30 minutes, starting from the time the trawl touches the sea floor. Towing speed is 3.5 knots.DataFor each fishing tow, the catch is sorted and weighed by taxa; individuals are counted and biological data are collected on a subsample. For fish, crab and squid, size and weight are measured by individual and, for some species, sex, gonad maturity, and the weight of certain organs (stomach, liver, gonads) are also evaluated. The soft rays of the anal fin are counted for redfish and otoliths are collected for Greenland halibut and Atlantic cod. Invertebrates are weighted and counted (no individual measurements).The biological data are divided into 4 files: a “Metadata” file containing set information, a “Catches” file containing catches per set for fish taxa, a “Carbio” file containing morphometric measurements per individual and a “Freql” file containing the length frequency of fish. It's important to note that this is raw data. Only sets considered successful are retained. In each set, all species are kept, with a few exceptions. Ungulate Winter Range - Proposed
An Ungulate Winter Range (UWR) is defined as an area that contains habitat that is necessary to meet the winter habitat requirements of an ungulate species. UWRs are based on current understanding of ungulate habitat requirements in winter, as interpreted by FLNR regional staff from current scientific and management literature, local knowledge, and other expertise from the region. UWRs within this set of data are currently in the review and consultation stage of the area designation process. As UWRs are designated they will be moved into the [Approved Ungulate Winter Range](http://catalogue.data.gov.bc.ca/dataset/ungulate-winter-range) dataset.

DFO Gulf Region European Green Crab Monitoring Dataset
PURPOSE:Provide presence/absence and abundance data for the non-indigenous and invasive European green crab (EGC) in selected southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (sGSL) estuaries along the Northumberland Strait coast of New-Brunswick and eastern Prince-Edward-Island.DESCRIPTION:Temporal monitoring during ice-free seasons of European green crab abundance is completed in response to previous regional population declines in the Maritime provinces. Note that where presence is not indicated on the map does not mean absence - this survey is limited to a few sites.Traps that did not fish correctly were not included in the dataset. Examples of defective traps include: an open trap, an open bait container, a trap filled with algae and falling into the open position, a trap that has not been fished for over 48 hours, an overturned trap, or a trap that has been significantly moved or otherwise tampered with.Population estimates are not derived from this data. PARAMETERS COLLECTED:1) EGC count, size measurement, sex, and catch weight2) Counts of bycatch species. Categories reported in this dataset are finfish (cunner, striped bass, mummichog, winter flounder, smooth flounder, sculpin, tomcod, American eel, banded killifish, flounder, unknown bony fish), Atlantic rock crab, American lobster, and other (lion's mane jellyfish, moon jellyfish, other crabs, moon snail). Other smaller species were often in the trap but were not included as bycatch in this dataset as they can easily escape the mesh size and would not consistently be trapped. 3) Environmental data: water depth at trap setting, sediment type, vegetation types noted, salinity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen (not included), specific conductance (not included), conductivity (not included), weather, cloud cover (not included), tide state and direction (upon fishing).NOTES ON QUALITY CONTROL:Data entry of morphological parameters randomly verified for accuracy.Weights are not reported for PEI sites due to inconsistencies with types of weighing scales and measurement protocols.PHYSICAL SAMPLE DETAILS:Whole European green crab specimensSAMPLING METHODS:Baited trapping with Fukui traps. Bait was in a bait can or bag.
